You may not have a ring saw (we didn't have one for the first fifteen years in the biz) but once we got one, we were quite happy. Before getting one, we asked friends if they would reccomend a band saw or a ring saw. Their response was that they were selling their band saw and buying a second ring saw..we figured that was a pretty good recomendation, so we got one and haven't regretted it! So you may want to put one on your wish list!

A great way to keep your markings from washing off using the saw is to dab a little petroleum jelly over the marks...then they wont wash off (they sell something marketed to keep markings on, but its just petroleum jelly and way more expensive)

I also keep a small jar of beeswax by my saws. It stays on a bit longer than petroleum jelly. Secret is to swipe some on your finger and "dab" or "pat" along your marked line since it's thicker than jelly.

If I'm going to saw a part I often use a silver sharpie because they don't wash off as readily.

Hey thanks so much for this info. I've been wondering how to get the tiny detailed areas ground down. Please tell us what the tiny grinder is and where to get one.

I'm using an accessory bit to my grinder. Go to our website www.gsg-art.com click on the Amazon Shop link and go to the stained glass supplies to find the i/8" bit.

I notice that when you were grinding you did not appear to have any water on your larger but (below). Did I see this correctly, or do you have another way to wet your bit? I love the Taurus ring saw and have tried it at a local glass shop, it is on my wish list!

On that grinder we have a brush system installed which is underneath the worksurface and uses a brush to apply water continuously.

Petroleum jelly works great in keeping markings on the glass, but I always wait at least a few hours, preferably overnight, before using the saw. Otherwise the water from the saw rinses it off pretty quickly.

Others have told me that Chapstick will work to keep it from floating away. It's so good to have sharpie pens to mark your glass!

It appears that you cut the basic shape then trim with the saw, then finish with the grinder. Is it possible to just skip step one and to just cut/trim with the ring saw, then to finish with the grind, or is there a reason that cutting the shape first simply works best?
@GommStainedGlass10 жыл бұрын
The ring costs about $100 so you don't want to overuse it or risk breaking it. It's usually just must easier and faster to cut glass with a hand held cutter.

But the ring saw is also a "grinder" because it uses the diamond ring blade. Just use finger cots or gloves to avoid cuts and skip the extra step if grinding every edge of every piece!

Where do you find the small grinder platform you use for the tiny pieces!
@GommStainedGlass4 жыл бұрын
The Wizard grinder comes with the platform as an accessory. You may be able to find one from a dealer of Inland products but then they might not work on other brands of grinders.

How do you still have fingers? How many times have you got cut up in this trade?
@GommStainedGlass10 жыл бұрын
Diamond surfaces don't cut the skin. Skin just vibrates against the blade, but fingernails get trimmed right away. This is true with grinders as well.

You're spending the whole video on the ring saw on grinding instead
@GommStainedGlass6 жыл бұрын
This video is on the ring saw and some techniques are important when cutting. There are videos on grinding.

The ring saw grinds as it cuts. To do a finish grind is a waste of the saw.
@GommStainedGlass4 жыл бұрын
That would be true if you were perfect in your cutting, but it often isn't so grinding is good so you can get things smoothed out
