The funny thing is that John Milton was actually a Christian and Paradise Lost was actually a story written to shame satan. But the poem was mis read and people thought he was praying Lucifer. Its just like when people say J.R.R Tolkien ( Author of Lord of the Rings ) was a atheist when he clearly was christian.

It's not even so much to shame satan. More to demonstrate that evil collapses in on itself and isn't anything to do with God "punishing" anyone. In Paradise Lost, Satan is an arrogant character, who choses his downfall and ultimately destroys himself. It does pity him, but in no way does it try to make some kind of suffering hero out of him. It is an attempt to rationalise and tell a different perspective - Satan is the lower, God is the higher -but they are both an allegory for the duality of man, and how man choses to utilise his wisdom, from the forbidden fruit of knowledge. Will people use their knowledge to be kinder and reach higher persuits? Or will they, through their addictive and destructive behaviours (which may lead to destruction of their spirit and loss of meaning and true self) destroy whatever is left of Paradise (Hence Sin births Death). Well, that's how I see it. The poem is pretty deep.

Milton wrote Satan to be seen as heroic, but upon further reading and a rereading it is clear that Satan is more like a lying politician with a silver but empty tongue, than a hero. Milton is often misread, Satan is not a suffering tragic hero, he is a self-destructive empty shell of his former self who doesn't have the balls to admit what the truth is even as he digs his hole deeper and deeper with his denial and pretending he is fine. Milton is such a powerful and persuasive writer that his Satan has fooled people for 400 years, that was Milton's aim. We are fallen and will make a hero of the most pathetic silver tongued liar, rather than the brute force of reality and truth. It is exactly because we are romantic and fallen we identify with Satan, not God. The fact that people still fall for Satan's flowery prose and contradictions asserts Milton's true poetic genius. He wanted you to read it and fall for Satan, thus the book is not just about the fall, but your falling as a reader.
@BadAssMacmillan5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Milton was a devout Christian. The fact that some people think this poem is pro-satan blows my mind.
@JonahInWales5 жыл бұрын
@@BadAssMacmillan Been thinking of making a video or essay about this, because so many people miss the point that Satan is like a lying politician with a nice smile in Paradise Lost. If you read more than the first two books, or actually reread the whole poem it's pretty obvious. We dislike God in the poem because he is pure justice, and lacks the human side of softness that we give to Christ, because of this we feel that God is somewhat alien to us in the poem, but that is because we have fallen and lack the ability to be just without forgiveness. I wrote my dissertation on the Theodicy of Paradise Lost, so it really frustrates me how so many people have such a shallow view of the poem and miss the point.

9:02 actually made me cringe. Not because it’s cringy…because that’s probably the worst reaction to that quote. Like it’s basically saying try to make it to the top, through deceit and lies…for your own power and gratification. Whilst making everyone else miserable. And he’s describing it as if it’s a powerful message, but for the extreme wrong reason.
@Dade333311 Жыл бұрын
I like your analysis of Satan as the protagonist. The first time I read Paradise Lost, I felt the same way. But I humbly suggest that you failed to take the next step, which is to see past the attractiveness of Satan's standpoint to the depravity behind it. Milton doesn't make it easy. And after all, if evil was not fascinating and attractive, who would ever be seduced by it?
@jonathanrivera3400 Жыл бұрын
You make an awesome point about the attractiveness of evil.
@lookoutforchris Жыл бұрын
Yeah he has missed the entire point of the book. Satan has powerful and attractive arguments. This is what you do in good writing and argumentation. The bigger and harder you make your opponent the greater your victory when you overcome them. There is no story, no stakes, if Satan is weak, if he’s unintelligent, if his arguments fall apart or are easy to get around. I feel bad for the guy that posted the video. Instead of understanding Milton he’s fallen for arguments of Satan like a naive person.

It's coffee. Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain Coffea species. The genus Coffea is native to tropical Africa (specifically having its origin in Ethiopia and Sudan) and Madagascar, the Comoros, Mauritius, and Réunion in the Indian Ocean.[2] Coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in the equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, Indian subcontinent, and Africa. The two most commonly grown are C. arabica and C. robusta. Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and dried. Dried coffee seeds (referred to as "beans") are roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor. Roasted beans are ground and then brewed with near-boiling water to produce the beverage known as coffee.

when Satan actually sees the garden of Eden and the newly formed earth for the first time he actually is filled with sadness and despair at the *PARADISE LOST* because he has forsaken it by bringing sin into the world, he almost seems remorseful. yet after his hinted brief remorse decides to double down on his efforts to overthrow God in anger, letting his pride consume him. I think John Milton executes this amazingly. Satan is supposed to be the master of deceit, the ultimate attractiveness of evil that lives in us all and can consume you completely. The reason what he says is so enticing even at times logical is because hes playing on the short term gains people in power exploit or people without power desire, Satan is literally trying to bend reality to his will like all tyrants. you only need to look at the nature and history of humanity to understand. Really think about the quote "Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven" In my mind it means Satan would literally rather live in a world were he is the most powerful/free and use that too oppresses others and spreads misery throughout his domain with him being the sole guy at the top while his subjects live in fear...take your pick of real world examples. Then understand this was published in 1667...Tales and teachings from the bible really are timeless. To reign in Hell you must be the most savage and evil to rise to the top. and anyone who subscribes to that that notion (Better to reign in hell) understand only one can reign at the top, and if your not willing to do unspeakable acts to obtain it, literally the most depraved actions imaginable then...trust me your not that guy pal. your most likely gonna be one of his lackys who does the deeds with all the consequences. "To serve in heaven" is supposed to touch on how people can perceive serving god as being enslaved or not free when in reality its supposed to be upstanding to a moral code that god has imposed...and you can take that as you will, Satan certainly didn't like it. Yet the message has a duel meaning. Yes you *SERVE* God but the idea is that even the lowest servant, people who have sinned but forgiven can even still reaps all the rewords of heaven and be by Gods side by living a furfilling life. I feel like the Islamic faith has a good notion on this. considering reigning in Hell is a herculean effort just to stay at the top but lavish. and serving in heaven is humble but is reworded with true happiness, literal Bliss . i choose option B.

It is to be expected - It's like no matter what you do, if some people dig it, there's always gonna be some who just under-all-circumstances-fuckin-hate-you, and they will, I kid you not, watch everything you do and try to find something to humiliate/discredit you, which is very entertaining at first, then quickly becomes routine. They're important though, because it means you're doing SOMEthing. There's a funny quote by Gore Vidal 'A narcissist is someone better looking than you are.' So, it doesn't bother me. If this is getting people to read these books (and it is) that's what's important. Hope you pick up Paradise Lost.

Granted, the aire we breathe in these PoMo times is shot through with Nitrous on one side/formaldehyde the other ; and as such we are all constrained to speak giddily and goofily of the obsidian realities that bedevil us. Nonetheless Milton is Sublime -and Paradise Lost supremely so. The "Postmodern" phase we are living through has deprived us all of a sense of the Sublime, - even to the point that we misconstrue the very meaning of the term. As such, sober understandings and respect for a Sublime work such as Paradise Lost is nearly impossible in our day. Because of this, I propose a corrective : Please read Edmund Burkes *On The Sublime and the Beautiful* -and perhaps do some syntopical reading in Puritan spheres* in order to regain a little gravity for the psyche. This being done, Milton can be read and discussed without the distortion of snickering or smirking - and the work can be given the respect it deserves. In short : Milton is a Mountain -and should not be scaled lightsomely. Thank you. . . . * suggest listening to AND reading sermons from contemporaneous ministers of the Puritan & Reformed Church. Jeremiah Burroughs is a good place to start. God be with you.

Maybe a tad oversimplified, 9:02 for example “Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven.” Follow by, clapping 😅 Let that quote really sink in. Sound almost…epic. Like something ghengis khan or some famed conquerer would say. Which is why the message is so misconstrued. Short term conquests in the pursuit of power. Built upon by deceit, lies and down right brutality. For the sake of 1 being at the top. Which could be anyone. Which is terrifying, because it could include anyone willing to do such horrific acts. Sound fun until your realise actually living in another person’s *HELL* is far worse than serving in someone’s else’s *HEAVEN* explains why Muslims say they submit to God. And here’s the interesting part. What do you think happens to those who submit too. Or even rule a hell of their own creation. Look at the most disgusting rulers in history. And then think 🧐 Hell on earth is completely possible. If your ruled by devils on earth. The holocaust. Stalins reign. Moa. Cambodias mass killing. Ghengis khan’s killing of 10% of all living humans. Half the text, in some pages, are really the footnotes. +Andy McKinney He was only "sympathetic" to Satan to a certain extent. But one must remember: Milton, being a Protestant and a very pious man, was not "of the Devil's party without knowing it", as Blake suggested. Milton was an extremely meticulous poet, and would have made humanity itself the hero(es) of Paradise Lost, and not Satan. Satan only appears to us as a heroic figure because of the influence of the Romantics, such as Blake and, I think, Shelley. If you're interested on this, you should read some critical commentary regarding Milton's stance on Satan's character in his work.
@Vytautas999 жыл бұрын
+Alejandro Chirino Yes, I have my favorite critic in mind when thinking about why Satan is so well received among the Romantics. They have rejoiced in the that heroic figure, which is how meaning gets started in PL, but we have to look to Adam and Eve for direction, since Satan is beyond us. They ground us in knowing more about ourselves, however much we applaud the fallen angel.

I like your reviews and you would be more fun to discuss books with than anyone else I know. IMHO, most folks I talk with are more interested in sports, celebrity gossip, or, perhaps...uh...party politics.

+Alpenland Hermit I wish tolkien could have lived long enough to write a book like paradise lost about melkor.

i did but it never mentioned about a detailed story from melkor's eyes. it told about how beautiful the trees of light were and how that little evil shitty melkor came to destroy them and suck their happiness away and how he then flied and how miserable and sad the others were, how cursed and tricky and selfish this arrogant melkor was. I'd like to know more about melkor's feelings. love the book though

Accessible and engaging review! Satan is the bomb in this book, 100%. But please don't use the word 'retard', you're undoing all your good, man.
