Evelyn from the mummy was so ingrained in me as the perfect character to the perfect male lead of Rick, that we named our daughter Evelyn. My husband shares the same love for the character and the mummy movies and also the name. Our daughter is now 9 and also loves the movie. She loved it when we told her we named her after the character.

I adored Evy as kid. You missed Karen from Blade (hot, a doctor, and helps save Blade, and I was so impressed by a platonic relationship on screen). Also Kida from Atlantis and Chél from El Dorado. The Girls from Charlie’s Angels 2001 (so giggly, fashionable, badass and they were the epitome of girl power)

I'd add at least two more to this lovely list: Katharine Hepburn's Rose Sayer from "The African Queen" (The book is a good read, too); and Natalie Wood's Maggie DuBois in 'The Great Race". Both fun, intelligent, driven, active characters, and both in fun, intelligent, well done movies. Plus, in "The Great Race", you get to see Jack Lemmon be hilarious alongside Peter Falk; and in "African Queen", you get to see Humphrey Bogart have tremendous fun.

Such a great list small soldiers, being part of it had me laughing. When I was living in LA I went on a few dates with this guy that would only communicate with me over kik and was super paranoid ab anyone coming to his house he always wanted to come to mine. He loved to foreshadow that he was related to someone famous and I was like yeah so is 70% of this town 😂 when I lost interest, and stopped responding to him out of nowhere. He was like my uncle was the military guy in small soldiers I’m afraid of being used for my proximity to fame 🤣 I didn’t respond I was laughing too hard

What an awesome list! I've never seen films 1 to 6, but you've piqued my interest. Films 7 to 11 I 100% agree with and Evy was one of the very first strong, complex women I saw on screen when I was a kid, I was/ still am obsessed! It's really frustrating to see Hollywood's watered down version of a "Strong Female Character" because it's doing more harm than good. Basically, a women can't be tough and confident and also be flawed.

Or be interesting. Or have any sort of character growth. Because where do you grow to when you're already portrayed as a perfect being.

@@crystalkelly9349 Hopefully it'll change with more female directors and filmmakers coming up, since those kinds of characters tend to be written by men trying not to be sexist

Great choice. Though, I MUST defend Katie Scarlett O'hara, she did what she had to do & saved a lot of people. The fact she was infatuated with Ashley Wilks, just makes her like a good many other women down the ages. Loxie was very similar. The constraints of the times on women are more apparent in the book Gone with the Wind.
@BetterWithBob2 жыл бұрын
Aha I was mostly just referring to her habit of slapping people when they won't do what she wants. She smacks Ashley when he tells her he's marrying Melanie after all. She is a wonderfully complicated character though, and Vivien Leigh's performance does stand the test of time.

@@BetterWithBobI'm not sure I can sign on to Elizabeth Swann as underappreciated either. MAYBE given the entirety of the PotC franchise? But seems like everybody loves Keira Knightley, specifically as Liz Swann (if you ask anybody which role is Keira's best, I'm guessing 99% will say Swann in PotC or the chick in Pride and Prejudice), and I've never heard even those most negative on the PotC franchise not add the caveat that the first holds up and is extremely fun.
