The family of a former meatpacker who died from COVID-19 alleges in a lawsuit that managers at a Tyson Foods plant in Iowa knew working conditions would result in illness, and even placed bets on how many workers would be infected. The family of Isidro Fernandez, who died in April, says the plant manager set up a winner-take-all betting pool for supervisors and managers to wager on coronavirus infections. Since the start of the pandemic, at least six workers have died and more than 1,000 tested positive for COVID-19 at the Iowa facility. Tyson Foods has suspended the managers involved in the alleged betting scheme, but worker rights advocates say it is further evidence of abuse and exploitation in the meat industry. "These companies are treating them like animals. They're treating them as disposable," says Magaly Licolli, executive director of Venceremos, an advocacy group for poultry plant workers.

@andiamador71564 жыл бұрын
Right. He said he would do away with two regulations for any new regulation....and his fans cheered. They have been cheering for getting poisoned and screwed over since Reagan. Trump arbitrarily and haphazardly (or for favors to donor class supporters) doing away with the things that keep people from getting sick and/or dying in food production and other product production, doing away with rules that keep them safe or paid properly on the job, doing away with rules and regulations that cut down on pollution in their neighborhoods, the air, soil, and water (But he SAID he wanted clean air and water, so that's good enough. Words and or magic means are good enough for them). Just trust the people who will kill you for an extra dollar in profit to do the right things, which may cost them an extra dollar, without any rules. Rules and regulations are for his voters and working Americans, not for the rulers and profiteers. Some people don't get beat down enough on the job and don't deserve to make enough to live, and some people don't have enough extra billions.

@@MCJSA I think anti labor sentiment is a decidedly right wing thing. But their faux populist propaganda did a good job of poisoning people's minds against unions and worker solidarity. They've fought universal healthcare the same way, warning it would be a nightmare from the USSR _and_ a giveaway to insurance companies, and, of course, "death panels" (run by _Hillary Clinton!_ ) It's no wonder so many people "hated" Obamacare even in 2016. So he ordered his employees to stay home when they are sick and as soon as and as long as they are sick, even a little bit. They had to be completely well to not have to go home and to be allowed to come back. This led to there being fewer sick days in total in that company. Let’s talk. As celebrations take place around the world for democracy the US has passed some devastating milestones - nearly 200,000 COVID-19 infections a day and 257,000 deaths. For many months some Americans have resisted wearing protective masks because they, "Take away freedom." Is this really about taking away freedoms? We are a country founded on the compassionate rule of law. We have seat belt laws and second-hand smoke laws. These are just two small examples of laws enacted to protect us when we cannot protect ourselves and each other. When functioning properly our representatives in government have the ability, as defined by constitutions, charters, etc., to do those things we cannot do all by ourselves. This may include building highways, providing K-12 education and let's not forget protecting us from deadly forest fires, air pollutants and faulty medical devises. Governors, legislators and judges, in addition to the media, are working as best as they can, as quickly as they can and with the best available public health information to keep all of us safe; individually we do not have the collective expertise, human and financial resources to manage these challenges. If they need to do this legally by decree, executive order or other provisions allowed them during emergencies then they are doing their jobs. Although most people are doing the best they can to save lives there are some powerful few who are literally killing people. Take Trump and his super spreader events. A Stanford University study found his rallies have killed 700 people and infected 30,000. Columbia University published a study recently on how 130,000-210,000 lives could have been saved if the Trump administration and his devotees had not politicized science a pandemic that has infected over 53 million and killed 1,300,000 world-wide - so far. Approximately 40% of the infected are asymptomatic and never know they may be spreading COVID according to the CDC. There is good news. The US government may start distributing a vaccine by the end of the year. It will go to the most vulnerable populations first including front line workers. It does take weeks after the first inoculation for the vaccine to take full effect and more than one booster shot may be necessary. No one knows the duration of immunity for anyone who has recovered from Coronavirus or from any particular vaccine. Pfizer vaccine showed 90% immunity but only for seven days. More needs to be understood. Perhaps the singular greatest problem with regard to vaccines is that too many people have been dissuaded from even getting vaccinated at all. If that is the case, it will prolong moving forward precipitously. It is possible we may be wearing masks well through 2021. Our best line of defense remains masks, social distancing, etc. By taking these basic precautions the University of Washington projects we can save over 65,000 lives by March 2021. Remember, this virus is about 8X deadlier than the 2019 flu and is the third leading cause of death in the US only behind heart disease and cancer. Please fact-check this information yourself. Facing the truth is empowering, freeing. The sooner the more people accept reality, the sooner we can recover together as a country - grieve those we have loved and lost - and collectively address other urgent concerns. One last thing - we are fortunate. Do the people resisting wearing a mask really have no understanding of what is true loss of your freedoms? Have we learned nothing from history: slavery, disenfranchisement, imprisonment in jails, ghettos and concentration camps, inscription into armies, forced marriage, starvation... Over 85,000 children (under five) in Yemen have died since 2015 directly because of US foreign policy. Currently, 16 million more Yemen children, women and men face starvation but we can still save them by providing immediate emergency assistance with our International allies. We just have to care enough about their freedom, their literal right to life. I’d like to believe we are capable of understanding false equivalences of facial coverings and the right to life, freedom from extreme suffering. This may not be what we have expected but it is nothing new, not really. And we each have superpowers - our infinite capacity for creative adaptation and a little thing called love. - Please feel free to share this post. Take care, stay safe out there and thank you.

@PetitePorchPerformances4 жыл бұрын
@@RocketmanRockyMatrix Incorrect - COVID-19 deaths include anyone who, if not for Coronavirus, would still be alive. The number of deaths currently reported are considered an undercount by epidemiologists based on the excessive death rate from the previous year - about a 60,000 discrepancy. There is a lack of consistent reporting standards in the US that should be corrected by the next administration so that we have a better understanding of the death toll. Also, you fail to account for morbidity rates - considerable pain, suffering and for all too many permanent disability.
If you can treat non-human sentient beings as commodities, it’s not a huge leap from treating humans you believe are “below” you the same. Remember that the meat and dairy industries are why we’re in this pandemic to begin with, and it’s coverage is nonexistent in mainstream media. It’s not just “unsanitary” Asian wet markets (lest we forget the 1918 pandemic that originated in a Kansas factory chicken farm (just like Tyson). We’re playing Russian roulette every time we come in contact with and exploit animals. Domestic or otherwise.

@Harim Abif actually it was 2 genetic mutations that caused us to become "human" if you will. One was when we started to develop multiple copies of the amylase gene, this made us efficient at converting starches into digestible sugars. Humans are really most adept at eating cooked starches, yams, tubers, grains and legumes. The other adaptation was when we stopped synthesizing Neu5Gc. At this point all mammalian meat became more inflamitory to consume. Both these adaptations made more suited to a plant based diet. The true human diet.
@SMABEM4 жыл бұрын
@Harim Abif Meat played a role in human development. But it isn't as significant as cooking, and the afore mentioned genetic mutations. Hey we all learn together in this great conversation. The meat industry relies on certain fallacies to keep it afloat.
