As a German petrolhead, I have to say one thing about the channel: it's not really about cars, but about love and dedication for a subject. I am always impressed by what you can forgive a car if it has history and character. I grew up more with questions of build quality, with top engineering and performance, you see the cars more as a kind of being. Thumbs up and thank you for a different way of looking at things.

The important thing is A: You're ok, B: Nobody else in the Family was involved, C: Betty will clearly live to see another day.. I saw the tweet and I feared after all this effort to get her over here it would end just like this.. Clearly she is a tough gal so glad she survived most of it.. Even then, Cars can be replaced, Human lives can't.. Glad all is ok in the end.

Bad luck mate. From experience, a good set of tyres transforms the ride + control of the AUs. I upgraded Chinese tyres to a set of a set of Bridgestone Turanzas and it was far quieter with loads more grip. Spending the extra is worth it!

Any tyre gives half-decent grip in dry conditions. Wet, not so much. I've always been happy with even basic Bridgestone RE92s on my Magna (Diamante). I have also experienced Continentals on a Magna - same grip but less progressive transition from slip to grip and back again and more noise.

My Land Rover Series III was the same when I bought it. A previous owner fitted some Trayal T-70's on it which were lethal when wet. If you went around a roundabout at more than 15mph, you'd be facing the other direction, and it wasn't even an off-road tyre. I since fitted some Avon Rangemaster's as fitted as OE back in the day and even 5 years and 28,000 miles later they're still like glue in the wet. Lesson learned, always fit premium tyres no matter how old or how few miles you do, you never know when they'll repay you.

Well tested/reviewed tyres really. Some mid-'budget' tyres are actually good, they just might not have much life in them, no claimed '50'000 miles' like some, but wet grip can still be good for a summer tyre. Tyre reviews is a channel on KZbin that I think is a good one to look up for a variety of different tyres. You don't need to be forking out £150+ per tyre to get a good tyre for our climate.

@@cambridgemart2075 If it's a TRUNK Road it's the responsibility of HE. Most A roads are County roads. Google Lincs Highways and they will have a map (or list) of resurfacing schemes in the area. If that road is planned to be resurfaced it will be on there. I'm a big fan of Hubnut but giiven how busy the roads are, and the fact cars aren't falling off the road on a daily basis, I would say it's likely to be 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. It could be diesel (very common on the exit of roundabouts, esp if trucks have had their fuel caps pinched by nomadic types), could be mud, could be terrible/old tyres.

Yep, that could have been a lot worse. The number of times we pass those skid warning signs (when we see them), I always find myself thinking "why don't they do something about it?". Many years ago, as a child I was in a Fiat 126 on the Amalfi coast, that spun in a blink of an eye. It had been raining, but the roads were drying, but the rain on hot tarmac had brought all the crap to the surface, made it like ice, a common issue in the Med, in summer. Perhaps a similar thing happened to you, also road camber changes are worse in a rear wheel drive car, is that road cambered ?

Chinese tyres can be crap! It’s one of the parts I never go cheap on, have a family to think of. Also the Ford is quite an old car, no stability/anti-slip electronic devices, must say it’s really hard to slid sideways with modern cars, though I usually drive front wheel driven cars with less power than Betty. Good that no one got hurt, material damage can always be sorted.

I used to have access to Falcons back in the mid '90s - EF and EL era, and they came fitted with either Bridgesone or Goodyear tyres. Both fine in dry conditions, but chalk and cheese in the wet, and not in Goodyear's favour. So easy to break traction. One wet day in a unfamiliar vehicle I figured if I take a corner with a little enthusiasm, I'd be able to pick which tyres were fitted. Turned out to be a mix: Bridgestones on the front, Goodyears on the rear. I was able to back off before things get beyond the point of recovery! :-)

Ian, I totally understand how this can happen. It is very easy to do. Number one child was enjoying her first year of her motoring freedom and was driving our AU through a roundabout, after it rained, and spun out. She smacked the kerb with the left rear wheel. Fortunately it wasn't far from home and when she rang, we rushed up to rescue her. No harm done to her or anyone else, just temporarily shattered nerves. She choose a good spot to do it, as it was only about 500m from our mechanic. I checked the car out and drove it his shop. It was making a horrible grinding noise which turned out to be a bent dust shield gouging a groove in the brake rotor. We also suffered a bent half shaft. A second hand shaft, new bearings, a new rotor and shield and she was good to go. The diff was fine, the wheel was undamaged and the tyre was good too. These cars are practically indestructible. We had it for another 6 years after this incident and she and number two both drove it during that time without killing it. With the enormous power and torque that Betty possesses, an open diff and no traction or stability control, make premium quality tyres an essential fitting on these cars. IIRC, we had Dunlop, Goodyear and Bridgestone tyres fitted and you still had to be careful on wet roads. Goodyear are better than Goodride (or any other junk brand.) Betty will soon be the Queen of the Highway again.

A useful experience video. I'd join others in recommending better tyres. It is in "marginal" conditions that tyre quality counts the most, so that's why I always pay the extra. Round here, it is mostly potholes, folks falling asleep (folks consistently hit the centre barrier of the nearby dual carriageway where there is a very gentle curve), and young people driving into trees on minor roads. Any way, we learn a lot from things that don't go so well. I am also glad we live nowhere near Lincolnshire.

Most important is that you're alright and that nothing worse happened (especially venturing further into that dip! Really feel for ya, and it's obvious that it wasn't your fault, if only from the scrapyard worth of broken parts below where Betty did manage to call a halt! Many years ago in my youth I had a similar issue at a wet roundabout in Manchester, but I'm the first to admit that speed was the main culprit (actually I was the main culprit), not helped by all four tyres being very close to, if not over the minimum limit, so your call on some new shoes in due course is probably a good one, especially as we race towards Winter - that said, I fully appreciate when you mentioned the speed at which it all happened, as I too was looking back down the road I'd just come up in less than the blink of an eye, and the eye that was blinking might not necessarily have been in my head! - just glad you're safe ! Chin up Betty, and chin up Hub Nut - look on the positive, at least the bent half-shaft straighten/swap will give you some more content, and you could give Maguiers Scratch 2.0 a try on the scratches. Stay safe!

I acquired a 52 plate Mitsubishi Space Star (coincidentally from a sweet lady called Betty!) for our eldest that had old Landsail tyres all round. I was so terrified something bad would happen that I swapped them at the earliest opportunity for 5 x all-season Bridgestone Weather Control A005, after watching tests on YT about how grippy they are in the wet. As well as wet grip, wet braking is now second to none. The cost £475, but I now have peace of mind. I guess the rubber you need for old Betty is not a standard offering in the land of the Pom, hence your order. I'm really glad you're fine and let us know how much Betty's new wellies will be. I actually refused to let a young pregnant lady in the office use the car on a wet day once. She accused me of of sexism, but I just knew how the car could behave. Hello Ian. Most people don't get to bare their experiences in a way that someone with your profile does. There will always be the waggy finger brigade who seem to think that they could not or would not be in a similar situation as they, in their own minds, cannot get it anything other than perfect. You were today exposed to the laws of physics which apply to us all and despite their condemnation they would have ended up in the same place. The important thing is you are unharmed and the car can be repaired. Look on the positive side, it has provided potentially more content! Pleased you are OK after a very worrying incident for you.
