What a tragedy to tear down Betty White's iconic home. I've driven and walked past Betty's home for years and it was always such a cheerful house. I never imagined, nor could Betty have probably ever imagined that one day property developers would tear down her beautiful home, probably to be replaced with some cold, stark, modern pile of architecture! 🏡🏠🏘🏡

I cannot believe she lived in that house for 50 yrs and they wasted no time disrespectfully tearing it down. She gave a tour of that house for tv more than once and it was beautiful. There was no reason they needed to tear it down. It could've been modernized if need be like if they thought the kitchen or bathrooms were dated or something they didn't need to rip it down like that. Why can't people preserve a piece of history such as that? Unbelievable! 😡 And that last clip at the end was hilarious but also should be played for the people who tore her beautiful home down!

I remember all of the outrage back in December when this was first posted by Betty's long time assistant who know runs her social media pages in tribute to her. She noted Betty was aware this would mostly like happen the reason this Brentwood property was offered for sale as a tear down/land sale as the value of the land far surpassed the house value. If you look at the surrounding area this 70 year old house was way out of place with the changing neighborhood. The Carmel property that she built with Allen was her true love house and has been sold as well but being newer and more modern still stands. A few quotes from her assistant replying to questions about the tear down: "Betty was never a lover of material things. She knew all of this would happen. Always harder for the rest of us to accept what she had made peace with long ago" "Betty always knew and planned this is what would happen. She was fine with it." "the person who bought it is building something more appropriate for the current market. It’s what happens in her neighborhood" "almost everything in her home was auctioned to benefit causes that were important to her"

Tearing down beautiful homes in Beverly Hills & similar areas, to build larger ones, is not unusual! I've driven though there, years ago & noticed that Jimmy Stewart's home on Roxbury Dr. Beverly Hills & the next house, had been taken down to build a mansion! It seems that the 'stars' of yesteryear, were content to live more modestly than today! R.I.P. Betty!

Apparently Betty had stipulated in her will that her Brentwood house be demolished after she died. There were showings only to pre-qualified buyers and they weren’t allowed to see the interior. Betty apparently preferred the house she built with her husband Allen Ludden in Carmel By-The-Sea and spent much of her time there. That beachfront house was sold for nearly 11 million dollars after Betty White died. On a side note, up until about 20-years ago Betty White was listed in the LA phonebook under Betty W Ludden with her home address!

The property was listed as "Land Value" so the intent from the get go was for it to be torn down. This may have well been in Betty's will. Or more to the point, her trust. A trust is never made public so we won't know. I think, so many have shown why keeping the house as is, or was rather, would be problematic. It would have made it more difficult to sell, first off. If decreed it could NOT be torn down, you have made a small pool of buyers yet again smaller. This allowed for the maximum price to be brought because the LAND has the value....money-wise. It brought in a LOT of money in a very short amount of time. All of which went to the variety of charities she supported. An AirBnB? That would NEVER have made $10 million dollars. EVER. All who ever "knew" Betty White will be long gone before an AirBnB can bring in that amount of money. At what... a couple grand MAYBE, each month? Remembering you gotta have it cleaned after each guest and stuff like plumbing and new roofing, and maybe a new A/C unit at some point. Plus the salary for someone to manage all that. NO. While we all wish "someone" would have kept that house, how many of us wouldn't just rather have a house built to our very specific preferences? We can't AFFORD to, so we take what we can find that is CLOSE. That house, style wise, wasn't too far off from the house I grew up in. It was only a few years older and a few hundred feet bigger. The location wasn't that far removed either, but very significant miles between Brentwood and Orange County! Had it been up to me, I would have torn my parents house down and rebuilt. It would have been easier. The electrical load WE put on that house was insufficient. Couldn't have the light on in the family room AND my bedroom and then turn on the microwave because if the fridge popped on, the circuit blew. All of the insides of a house can be VERY out of date. You can love the DECOR but it doesn't matter when you have to remove every single interior wall to run all new electrical. And now you gotta check code on everything. Oh...the plumbing? That needs to be replaced. Who knows...might be tile drains instead of PVC under all of that. Betty I am sure wanted as much money as soon as possible so it could go to her charities. I would not be surprised if she also did not want it to become a tourist stopping point. It funny how we always laugh at design choice from years gone by....the shag carpets or the floral chintz sofa. But so it goes with houses too. You can tell when neighborhoods were built by the way they look. And MOST neighborhoods don't change because people can't afford to do a full remodel/rebuild. But that's the primary reason. Most of us live in neighborhoods built by a developer who built the same house over and over again. So neighborhoods that attract people who can afford to spend 10 million dollars on the LOT? They're gonna look very different every 10 or so years.

I can promise you that it isn't ALL Americans who wish to see these homes destroyed. It is truly tragic, and many of us believe that homes, and other places of interest, should be preserved. They should remain as somewhere special, as it was truly special to the people who owned it. Im surprised she spent her later years in such a modest timber home as her previous house now abandoned was an absolute Mansion and not all that old either 🤷‍♂

Hi Scott, I'm always interested in the pieces of history you gather, so I watched this video last week and haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I'm not a collector of anything celebrity-based, and buying a tiny piece of Betty's house wasn't a luxury I could really afford. In the end, though, I had to. She was one of the most positive forces in the public eye for so many years, and she was medicine to our hearts. She made the absolute most of her century-long life not just by honoring the sacredness of animals, but by laughing, and making us laugh, with her awareness that our existence is simultaneously pure ridiculousness and a treasure, too. I believe that the home she lived, laughed, and loved in for 50 years was a rare monument to what value our own lives can hold if only we choose to live in a similar state of gratitude. And this is why I purchased a little piece of that house from you--with the hope that maybe it will somehow hold a bit of her joyful energy, and that just seeing it on my shelf will remind me of what she knew: Each day is what we make of it. I thank you for gathering up these pieces left in her wake and sharing them with people like me.

*Please make a video on Liza Minneli's old house where I think her step-mother lived until she was like 100? The house stood vacant for many years. Liza partly grew up there. Her father owned the house and was passed on to his wife. After she died Liza never claimed it. As far as I know it was stripped and renovated? Betty's house did look a bit old and dated. Lucille Ball's house fortunately was NOT turn down, but stripped and renovated beautifully. Can still see the outline of old house, which was thoughtful of the new owners. So, when you see it, you can tell it was once her house*

That's ashame about her beautiful home. One evening I had the opportunity of speaking with Betty. I was answering phone lines for the nellis air force base exchange. Betty White was coming to do a meet greet. Her agent had called to inform the bx. Ms. White was not feeling well an was not coming. I said I hope she feels well very soon. I then overheard a lady say thank you. I then asked was that Ms. White. To my surprise she answered back yes. I told her it was pleasure talking to her and thanked her. Needless to say my night was made.

Man that's crazy that you can have 5 bedrooms and six bathrooms in a 3,000 square feet house. My house is 3,350 and I have 3 bedrooms and a 4th would have been pushing it.I liked her house almost like a house you would find in Texas on a ranch.

3501 sq ft heated and cooled and I have 5 huge bedrooms and 4 full bathrooms, a bonus room big enough to be a 6th bedroom that I turned into a diva closet. It is plenty of space and it all works beautifully.

That was a lovely house - I'm sure they'll build some piece of crap on the property. I visited Allen Ludden's grave site in Mineral Point, Wisconsin - and I can tell you that isn't the same stone that was pictured in the video. He had one of those ground level rectangular shaped ones. This was around 1998-2000, and I made a comment that Betty White needs to get out her more because it was somewhat grown over with grass.
