BAD HABITS // LYRICS
These words will be the end of me
These words bring a new life to me
Stacked upon one another, yet I cannot grip
I cannot grip
These words render through a cosmic sea
These words revoke our life to be
Stacked upon one another, yet I cannot grip
I cannot grip
Contagion has shut down
Ground control to minor 3rds
Overtake and shed some sleep
Harmony loves tragedy in our own jeopardy
I cannot seem to say what I need
They have my tongue
Let’s cut it out
Can’t speak over you
My words keep losing meaning
Maybe don’t take it so serious
Three syllables to complete a thought
I get caught
Becoming lost
As words have quickly left me
The winds howl around their lost souls today
Stuck in a spectrum between the living and the dead
Their open mouths enter the worms of the living
Slither in and out
The winds howl around their lost souls today
Stagnant air lifts up the creature myth
Stuck between life and death
An order to connect and forget
Time is evaporating
Time is still
I cannot seem to say what I need
They have my tongue
Let’s cut it out
In order to connect and forget
Connect and forget
Sleep on, fly on
In our minds we can fly

When I heard “sleep on, fly on” I got emotional and I didn’t know why, then I figured it out. Ants of the Sky was the BTBAM song that changed my path as a guitarist and hearing that call back, for a small moment I was a 16 year old kid again, being truly inspired and changed for the first time all over again. This is what we needed after that year we all experienced. A year of fearing, hating, and just doubting existence in general. We needed to feel inspired, to “fly on”.

I saw this comment so I patiently waited for that point in the song... then, I actually got chills even though I knew that it was coming. The original "sleep on, fly on" was my favorite moment in the first album and I really cannot express how happy that this first listen of Colors II is making me right now. These callbacks to previous songs are perfect.

Totally dude. I feel like when Dan came in in 2004 he was hugely influenced by Chris Squire and Yes as a whole and brought that in with him. You heard snippets of it in Alaska and the rest of the band had time to listen to all the bands Dan was showing them so by the time they were writing Colors, it just exploded. You hear a ton of Yes on this album too. I love it too.

@@golions13579 I feel some Cardiacs too. Dan's the band's proghead, in the best way ("expert" is the most adequate word for him). His tastes are really loud in this record - I think Colors II has his most present contributions: bass, keys, songwriting... he rolled all over it

I hear more King Crimson, Kansas, and ELP as well. And yes (no pun intended), Dan brought most of the prog influences into the band, even though he performed wildly live in the mid to late 2000's. You can gradually see him mature as a musician both in studio and live during the Parallax II era, especially with him playing additional keys with Tommy.

It is without question the best song on the album, and that says more about the song’s greatness rather than the rest of the album lacking quality(I think it’s all-around a very good album with several impressive tracks). But I believe Bad Habits is one of the very best songs BTBAM have ever written. Which is saying something.

So I was listening to this song while scrolling the BTBAM subreddit a few days ago and someone mentioned that they think that this might be the last album they make because they keep making callbacks to Colors and usually when an artist does that, they're about to disband. I'm happy to say I haven't really seen any negative response to this release at all! Maybe a few minor let downs or criticisms here and there but from what I've seen it's been very postive

i could do without the growling tbh, but that aside i like it, i imagine people who hate growling even more than me might just write off the song entirely.

A couple big ones are: 4:02, southern rock kinda section is almost identical to the section in “Ants of the Sky” at around 3:40 “Sleep on, fly on, in your mind, you can fly” is a direct lyrical call back to Ants of the sky
