I grew up in Armoy in the 70's and watching Joey Dunlop, Mervyn Robinson and Frank Kennedy doing the things they did all over Ireland and the Isle of Man with bikes hobbled together was an achievement in itself. Joey was and always will be the King of the Mountain and the ultimate Road Racer. If you didn't ever see the genius of William Joseph Dunlop on a motorcycle then you have never seen what a real road racer can do. He could jump on a 125, a 250, and then a superbike and smoke the opposition. Joeys 2nd 1000cc superbike win was in the Classic TT 1980 against the Honda works team of Mick Grant and Ron Haslam. Joey was on an old Yamaha with an oversize petrol tank that Hector O'Neill had welded up for him so he wouldn't have to pit but on the last lap the strap holding on the tank broke and Joey had to hold it with his knees in the final stages of the race. That was just a small example of his will to win that kept him winning.

Nobody knows how many Mike Hailwood would have won if his contract with Honda hadn't been used to stop him from racing for a decade at the height of his power. But he won both before and after that enforced hiatus, and is alone the reason for the fine handling bikes we have today - the Japanese just kept upping the horsepower saying if you had enough power you could make up on the straights what you lost in the bends. And because they could also afford to hire the best riders, they got away with it. Then Mike came back and rubbed their noses in it on the Sports Motorcycles Ducati privateer entry, beating works machines with at last one and a half times the horsepower on handling and sheer ability. THAT feat showed the Japanese manufacturers that handling properly over bumps and through bends matters at least as much as having a high power-to-weight ratio, and it is since then that the Japanese started producing increasingly fine-handling motorcycles. He showed them what difference it makes, and changed mass-market and racing motorcycles forever. No one else can claim that.

The event is so man and machine. The top boys lapping at a brainbending 135mph laps. The risk is total. IMHO, anyone topping 100mph lap has a story to tell their Children. In this years races, I don't think anything tops Dean Harrison's ride. Two freaking high speed birdstrikes. Two. A smashed fairing. Balls the size of galaxies. I doubt many humans would ride to a great finish, on a smashed bike, and a double underwear wrecking set of events. Fucking epic. Respect to every rider. Its a really special thing, and an ultimate challenge for a man / machine. And a note on the side car boys. When I was a kid, on the Island, I watched Hizzy and foggy go balls to the wall over several years, including the trick oval piston years on ultra trick honda's, and Hizzy on the white charger which created a legend. They lapped at @120 mph and people pondered if the limit had been reached. The sidecar boys are now lapping at 120mph. Absolutely freaking staggering.

I've never been to the Isle of Man, but I've followed the TT for 25 years. I'm also a rider and have been for most of my life, and been a fan of anything with 2 wheels since I was a boy. This doesn't make me an expert by any means. Joey Dunlop was on such another level that his riding made him untouchable! Who wins the TT at 48 years old? He was beyond a generational talent...3 generations more like! Just built differently from normal people. John McGuiness is not Joey Dunlop, but he's also built differently. I remember watching him one year and couldn't believe what I saw. He didn't look fast anywhere on the course, but he was so smooth and so efficient in his riding style that he could shave seconds off his lap times. Every year I pray for the men who are going to go out and test themselves on the Isle of Man - the last bastion of racing freedom.

John McGuinness is a true gentleman, at the NW200 last year he stood in his leathers for an hour, straight after the last race, signing autographs and chatting to punters, but Joey is the king of the mountain without doubt, he is a god worldwide in motorcycle circles, worked and maintained his own bikes, often into the small hours, smoking and drinking, turned up at the start likely de-hydrated and a bit of a hangover and blew away all the younger, fitter, healthier riders, and sometimes he won on a slower bike. Joey didn't fulfil the role of a corporate roll model. Genius

cant wait to see this years race.......even the dude who comes in last place at this race is a friggen stud, the balls and nerves to do this race are unsurpassed, many many moto gp riders and champions wont even touch this race, that speaks volumes!

Joey, Hizzy, DJ & Mcguinness. All seemed to have a level above their fellow racers in their day. Hicky will be hard to dislodge in the Superbike & Senior TT, but a certain Mr Dunlop will have something to say about that. All that really matters is that everyone is safe and well.

I knew a lot would say it’s John, but I also knew John would say it’s Joey. Joey was amazing but so is John.

It is weird for me, because when people say TT I think about Guy Martin. If you speak about the Hero of TT I directly think about John Hinds... And then Dunlop and Hickman and McGuiness.

One of my dreams is to rent a bike and take a lap on the Mountain Course. Not at high speed. Just a nice cruise around the track which will better answer all of the questions I’ve long had about this race. To ride Ballaugh, Sulby Straight, Ramsey Hairpin and Bungalow and all the other famous check points and back into Douglas would be emotionally astounding and I’d be able to really appreciate what it must be like to ride at WOT in this bonkers race. Cheers to the riders in the best motor sports race on the planet from 🇺🇸.

That's not something you can stop to think about .death isn't even a passing thought that's just the detachment needed to race or u wouldn't have the bottle to push yrself and find your limits. U know it can happen but u can't dwell on it or u would never race.

John has always been my favourite road racer, but you can never look past Joey. Joey is the GOAT..... Michael could challenge that 26 wins, Pete has a long way to go from 9 wins. Everyone always overlooks just how amazing Bruce Anstey was, sooooo smooth and fast.
