Between the Lines QAL: Preparations

Please Note!! June 6th update:
!! Whoops! Thank you so much for paying close attention to what I'm doing in my videos 🫣
!! I'm indeed cutting double the amount of strips you need for the sashing.
!! No worries if you've already cut them. We can use them in rows 2, 3, 4 and 8 😅
!! But if you haven't cut them yet, just cut 13 of the 53 x 1.5 inch strips.
!! The fabric in the video is folded double, so I ended up with 25 strips instead of 13.

This is the first time I have watched a clear explanation for cutting yardage. I always tried to match the salvages and that is tough with 108 yardage. Thank you

Hi. So excited to start this beautiful quilt. :) I noticed at 11:41 in the video you say we need 3 additional strips at 1 1/2” - however, on the screen it is typed as “2 strips at 1/2”. I followed what you said but others may go off what’s typed on the screen.

I'm was hoping I could modify this QAL into a quilt-as-you-go because I only have a domestic and I find I can't work on building my quilting skills if I'm simultaneously wrestling a full size quilt. It seems that with these sashing strips between each row it would work pretty well to practice some free motion quilting strip by strip and then connect, using the sashings. I don't have a lot of quilting experience and would love for those who have done quilt-as-you-go to let me know if this seems like a good possibility, what issues I might run into, or what reasons would make this a bad idea. Eager to learn all I can this time around again! Thanks!!

Yes! This quilt works very well as a quilt as you go. I have a video on that from the first Sugaridoo Bernina QAL. Should be somewhere on my channel

I plan on making mine on a Vintage sewing machine and also doing it as a quilt as you go. I am also doing the other qal (from her book)with Sugaridoo and I am making it quilt as you go. It is working out great so far. You will not have any problems doing it this way. 😊

Looks like we might be combining the "Row by Row" and "Quilt As You Go" when making up this quilt and when assembling it..... Just a guess. Will have to wait and see.

@@peggycox1378 For assembly you will have options. I will be assembling it into one quilt top. But you can either quilt it quilt as you go for every row, or piece together part of the top and quilt those parts before joining them.

@@JozENDam Hoi Muriël, ik heb de stof zo gevouwen dat het 53" lang is. Daar snij ik vervolgens stroken van die 53 x 1 1/2 inch zijn. Dus het is dubbelgevouwen, maar als je het zo snijdt wordt elke keer snijden wel 1 lange strook. Morgen ochtend staan alle afmetingen en instructies in de blog post.

I am so excited. The stripes are all for the top of the quilt? I work with different colours. With borders you mean mean the borders of the top, not the binding? I guess they would be too small for the binding, but I am not sure and don't want to cut the wrong fabric😊 Greetings, Christiane

Yes, the sashing strips go inbetween the rows. The border goes around the quilt top. Binding will follow at the end of the QAL in a different fabric

So excited for the QAL! When you cut the strips - wasn't the fabric still folded how it was folded on the bolt? So every time you cut a 1.5" strip, weren't you cutting two? It looked like you got 25 strips (the first 10 strips doubled, the next 2 doubled, and then the last on the fold making the odd number?), so I just wanted to check. Thanks!

I got 25 1.5” strips, too, but it looks like those extra strips can be cut up for the background sections inside the rows. ❤

Thanks @jillpotkalesky5620 and @nancygoehring! You are very correct. I made a mistake by not counting the doubles. Luckily we can use these strips in rows 2, 3, 4 and 8. So no fabric wasted. Thank you for mentioning it, very much appreciate that!

I did the first row and I think it turned out quite well my question is this how much of my accent fabric will I need for this quilt apparently I'm just not seeing it can anybody point me in the right direction

Is there any background left out of the background? I have a litlle less than 5 yard of the fabric I want to use.

Hi, there is some wiggle room calculated for the background. So you should be fine with a little less then 5 yard
