As for me, I prefer the random melodies and melisma that Mariah added to her cover of this song. And all in all with the added whistle note, it is a true ear-gasmic gem. If you didn't, try listening to Mariah's version (Me.I Am Mariah... the Elusive Chanteuse album) from start to finish so you would know what I'm talking about. Even the late Mr. George Michael appreciated what Mariah did to the song. :) As for this version, I think she became very aggressive in her approach to this song (climax), which is why I prefer Mariah's version more. But Beverly has great voice. More like Aretha with a touch of Beyonce (I'm not sure why I hear a little bit of Beyonce in her voice, maybe it's just me)

It's funny, I've heard this song in the past but sadly didn't really appreciate how superbly written it is. Unfortunately, it took his passing for me to look up his music and stumble upon this beautiful gem. Now I have it on repeat. It has a soulful/bluesy/rock vibe to it. The arrangement puts me in the mind of other great hits like Aretha's "Natural Woman" and "Aint No Way". The pleading tone of the vocals reminds of a more recent song by the X Ambassadors "Unsteady". I also can't get enough of the line: "I don't want to learn to hold you, touch you!" Without that heartfelt line, this song would not be the same!
