I was 14:in 1984:when this came out. Serge was supposed to show the "culture shock" that Axel experienced (being a NY.cop in Beverly Hills). At the time, NY and California were two different worlds! Serge had very little screentime, but he surprisingly stole the show. Audience's loved him so much, they thought the actor deserved an Oscar nomination (I'm not kidding). The vocal minority who didn't approve of Surge because of his "lifestyle." were shut down, "Who cares about that? Serge is great, we love him!* When a sequel was announced, audiences desperately hoped Serge would return. He did.
