Many immigration officers remain understanding and supportive of balikbayan travelers. On one occasion, when I arrived in the Philippines, an immigration officer inquired if I had my Philippine passport. I replied that I did not. She then asked if I had a copy of my re-acquisition certificate, mentioning that a digital copy on my phone would suffice. I explained that I am not a dual citizen, and I felt as though she was ensuring I could receive the full benefit of an indefinite stay, had I been a dual citizen. Without me asking for the balikbayan privilege, she promptly stamped my passport with a one-year visa. 😊

I recently returned from a vacation two days ago and encountered some immigration procedures. If you have dual citizenship, you should apply for a Philippine passport and carry both passports when traveling to the Philippines, even if you have a reacquisition certificate. Having a reacquisition certificate guarantees you the balik-bayan benefits only. But for traveling, you must have a PH passport as well. Otherwise, immigration may only grant you a one-year visit stamp on your foreign passport. The immigration officer told me, that the embassy should have requested you apply for a new passport after you had the oath-taking. For me, It's more convenient to carry two passports instead of three separate documents or certificates.

I just recently been in in the Philippines for short trip. I arrived in the Philippines in June and my US passport was stamped as balikbayan. I didn't know it at that time. When we visited the immigration office I talked to a BI officer about whether I should have it re-stamped as dual citizen. I was advised to apply for a Philippine passport instead. You're right Ms. Addy, my fault is that I just assumed that since I have been a dual citizen for a long time now, it will reflect in my passport that I am one but it was not the case. The Philippines has a long way yet before everything becomes updated in the system. So make sure to present your dual citizen certificate whether you're asked to or not.

My husband and I arrived in the Philippines June 2024, and I didn't tell the immigration officer that I am a dual citizen but meron po akong copy sa dual citizenship ko, pero ang na sabi ko sa officer ay balikbayan kasi ang akin ay kasama ko asawa ko. I didn't bother kasi 10 days lang kami at balik din naman ka agad. Ang tanong ko will that affect my future arrival sa pag stamp? Pero what if mag apply na ako nang Philippine passport din okay na diba?

After watching this episode I checked my passport if it was stamped with only 1 year of stay in the Philippines as I didn't show my dual citizenship certificate when I arrived just this past April 3, 2024. I didn't think of showing my dual citizenship, and there it was stamped with only 1 year of visa. Next time I go to visit Philippines I surely will show my dual citizenship certificate from now on. No one had asked me at the Immigration if I was a dual citizen or not. Though I only stayed in the Philippines 4 months, this is still a good information to know. So thank you for bringing it up.

I am a dual Citizen (Filipino-American) and yes when got to the Immigration, they stamped my passport for a year stay but this all depends on what kind of passport you're showing them at that time. I have both my Philippine and US passports with me at that time but during the interview, I only showed them my US passport- I uses my US passport when traveling para walang kuskos balungos unless I have to stay indefinitely then I have to show them my Philippine passport as well or to get out of paying the travel tax. To not pay the travel tax, yes I have to tell that I am a dual Citizen and show them my PHILIPPINE passport. So depende lang yan eh, siguro yung pag travel nya and during her interview, she only showed them her foreign passport then that's the reason why she got a 1 year stamp.

Dual citizen din ako.Na checked pa nga niya yong 3 documents ko as well as my old philippine passport. Dala dala ko yan. For now ok lang kasi 14 days lang naman ako doon. Thanks

It depends on the circumstances. Those two had the intention to stay, which is very rare. Normally you have kids, properties, assets, bank accounts or a job abroad. You cannot simply decide pronto 'Hey, I wanna stay here indefinitely' and leave everything behind. Who in the world does that these days?? LOL! As a dual citizen, my passport is always stamped with BB, but that has never been a problem since I only stay 1-2 weeks at most. This shouldn't be a problem whose intention is to take a short vacation only but have real lives abroad.

Just for info, if you’re a dual citizen, it’s your responsibility to tell the customs officer. But the best way is to use your Philippine passport and in a minute, you’ll be out of the automatic portal of immigration.

Depende sa immigration officer yan, tinitingnan nila ang previous stamps sa US passport mo. Pag mayt atak na previously na RA 9225 ka, wala ka na problema. Every year I go home sa Pinas, yung reacquistion cert lang pinapakita ko. I see no need to get a Philippine passport. It’s just an added bureaucratic red tape.

Yes, even the consulate in Hawaii, told me when I got my dual citizenship I don’t need a Philippine passport. Another Passport is a waste of money, because it expires. Only drawback is that if you are staying longer than a month or so, some airlines will ask for Phil passport. But you can show them your citizenship certificate and it’s good.. a lot of advantages and disadvantages.

Yes , they can go to the immigration office and have it changed. It happened to me . Nag triple ang gasto namin. Kasi nagbayad kami ng travel agent kay sa pupunta pa kami sa Manila at mag stay sa hotel. Nag stamp ulit and signed by an officer.

I am a dual citizen, I went home to the Philippines last March 8,2023. The immigration officer did not ask me if I am a dual citizen or not. I did not notice that there was a stamp below my arrival date which is March 7, 2024. I only notice it before my flight back here in USA on May 20, 24. When I was at the immigration the officer asked me if I am a dual citizen so I said yes sir and I showed my documents. There was no penalty or any hassle. I was in the Philippines for more than a year.

Minsan depende din iyan sa “mood” ng immigration officer. There was a time umuwi ako at hinde pa ako dual at that time. Napaka pleasant sa akin ng IO, and when she handed me back my U.S. passport ay nagulat ako dahil one year stay ang itinatak niya. It has been the immigration rule for PH dual citizen entering PH,, that they should bring their PH document ...either PH passport,, embassy ID issued by the PH embassy.. Or the original oath of of allegiance certificate also from the embassy.. Otherwise you will get a balikbayan stamp valid to stay for 1 year in PH,, without those documents..or you might be given only 3 months tourist stamp entry if you only show your foreign passport without declaring your dual citizenship. Let's not only assume or say that we are dual citizen.. If we want to demand for our rights as Filipinos, We should also be diligent enough to comply.. I've been travelling back to PH once or twise a, year,,, for more than 42 years now,, so it is how it is.. We can not claim to be a citizen of any country if we cannot prove it by documents,,,as easy as that..
