This might be more of a "Praxis thing" than a normal rational human thing, but I tried doing that "boil at a rapid polling boil" technique that's suggested for destroying botulism toxin in contaminated food on a can of tomatoes that was bulged out and hissed when I opened it. It smelled fine. It looked fine. But it was bulged and it hissed. I WILL say that I didn't boil it for 10 minutes, but rather for 2 hours... and if memory serves, I think I was cooking in a pressure cooker too. But... well... that was a while ago and I'm still here. And I've repeated that a few other times since. I have an aging case of canned tomatoes, so there have been multiple opportunities. Just passing that along as a data point in all of this. I hate waste. Thanks for this video reminder to people.

Reminder... Elderly people sense of smell isn't as good as younger. My father in law ate chicken in his frig that went bad, he didn't realize and he died of food poisoning.

Thank you for educating people on this. When we open a can that has an "expired" date, we just boil it for 15 minutes like the USDA recommends.

I do the same thing with the sharpie. I'm not sure if your 6/25 was June 25th or June of 2025? Do you do the date it came into the pantry or the expiration date? I write the month and year on my items. So this month will all be 9/24 on everything. For small items, I often bag them by year so it's easier to rotate through the right year of items without them being scrambled in with other years. Again, great video topic!

When I first started, I tried to do expiration dates, but found myself fumbling all over the surface of the different items searching for where each product puts that info and it just made it all take so much longer that I figured purchase date is good enough for my purposes. It might occasionally result in my using things in a less than ideal order (if I buy an older item at a store later on) but overall I think it's a fine way to go.

Acidic can foods like tomatoes,and tomato sauces the food tastes metallic. I'm guessing because of the acid in the tomatoes leached into the metal can.

Do you have an idea with past expiration dates on cake mixes because of the yeast would expire. Right? Do you have a way I can still use it? Can I add live yeast or something else?... Thank you !

The cake will taste fine but won't rise as much. You can always add a little baking powder.
