Tomato cages sold at garden stores are the biggest gardening scam ever created! Don't buy these little tomato cages unless you plan to use them on pepper plants. It's much easier just to build your own tomato cages from concrete reinforcement wire.

I have been using the WWF (welded wire fabric or mesh as known in the construction business) for many years. This is a method used by my dad when he began gardening back in the 1960s. There are still a few of his original cages that I use today, April 28,2019. They will rust if left in ground contact while in storage. For the length of mesh you want, take a look at the diameter you want and multiply by 3. That will close to your chosen diameter. Make adjustments from there. The squares are 6” sq. so the length is easy to determine. No additional tools needed. As the tomato cages rust they can be cut to pepper height cages. Enjoyed your video.

Great build 😀 Little tip.... What ever size diameter cage you want, say around 24 inches from example. All you have to do is treble ( X by 3 ) that 24 inches and it'll give you the length to cut the wire for a round cage thats about 23 inches diameter. Works for any size you like . So 12 inch diameter cage = 36 inches of wire 😀😀

As someone who has used wire tomato cages for years, I find your advice to be very appropriate. I started out with the light-wire cage you showed, but graduated to the similar, but heavier-wire cages, with a T-post as added support. These are adequate as long as you don't let the vines get any longer than 6'. Your wire re-mesh cages & T-posts are the best however, and you can add extensions to them, as you mentioned.

I recently visited a garden where they were using a pulley system for some of their tomato varieties. They were in a tunnel similar to yours and the vines were growing about 20 feet straight up. When it was time to harvest, they just lowered the whole vine and picked them.

That was one of the best suggestions I have ever gotten. Yes I was scammed and bought those lousy good for nothing tomato cages from walmart. They did not work. My indeterminate tomatoes which have gotten huge growing just in pots are being staked up right now with Long branch the luckily I had cut down a dead tree and had the 8 to 10 ft branches available to help me try to hold these poor plants up. I will know better next year that's for sure. Thanks for the advice.

I'm with you on those scam trellises. We've used the tall cylinder trellises now for years and love them. They have large enough grid you can still grab a tomatoes and get your hand out of the opening. Instead of t-posts I use cedar stakes, 3 on each trellis. Drive each halfway into the soil at even intervals around the trellis. Next I tie the trellis to the stakes. In August we get substantial summer winds and as of yet have had them budge. Oh by the way, these fit perfect into large planters like utility buckets, half barrel or whiskey barrel planters. The other trellises we had we liked a lot were square towers that collapsed down for storage. 4 rungs offset so the whole thing folded easily. They were made from scrape hardwood a friend gave us and the only downside was the ends that were sunk into the ground rotted over time. Had a short broad one for ground cherries that worked perfectly. Held the branches up off the ground giving us a clear view of the fruit on the ground.

it's a learning experience for new growers. anyone who buys a 2 foot tall cage will soon find it way too short for tomatoes. personally i never use cages but have staked tomatoes and peppers for years as well as built trellises. that homemade cage in the video is too short for my needs as all my tomatoes grow over my head. instead of stacking cages i find it easier to just use emt to construct a trellis. that way i can handle tomato plants that grow 8 ft and beyond.

The guy over at One Yard Revolution has a tomato trellis he makes out of electrical conduit, a couple of rebar pieces, and concrete reinforcing wire. Very similar in concept to yours but maybe easier to store at year end. I think yours would be easier to train the tomatoes on.

Awesome solution! This year I'm trying the string method, like Curtis Stone. I built a trellis that's basically just an empty frame, 7' tall by 16' wide, with a horizontal crossbar in the center. I needed something that wouldn't draw the eye, because we have a very strict, grouchy old manager that drives around inspecting each lot every single morning, and she demands everything be super tidy and perfect. (I obviously cannot wait to get our own land!) My plants are only about 2' tall right now, but so far it's holding up.

You can go by building sites, too, and get leftover short lengths from them, for free. I scrounge alot of stuff. I agree, it the best tomato cage. If you grow basil at the base, or around you tomao plants, they taste better, and deters hawkmoths.(tomato hornworm). You have to use a stake with a cage. I've been doing it for years it works great. You just drive a wooden stake deep into the ground and put the tomato cage around it. Even the heaviest tomato plants will make the cage lean but the stake will hold it up and it will never fall. It's not a scam. I've actually been using the same stakes and cages for close to 10 years now. I haven't had to spend a dime on new ones in around a decade.

jgp 1866 , It does depend upon what you get . I have used the lightweight type in the past . Yup , JUNK ! But I have some now that are made with much heavier wire . Much heavier wire ! They are over five feet high and have four legs to stick into the soil rather than only three. The heavier ones have never fallen over from the weight of the tomatoes. Although a good wind will blow them over. But , the wind blows everything over ! I think that the heavy gauge wire ones make good individual cages. Easier to use in different places.

IMO not only would those cages be a bit expensive (not as much as the scam ones though) but they also would make it a bit difficult to sucker your plants. What's wrong with a top pole and some twine coming down to the plant. Easy, cheap, less work except that you occasionally have to wrap your main stem(s) around the twine. Also makes the plant very open to any type of maintenance. TBH I would pick the weave option over those ginormous homemade cages. But you are definitely correct that the SCAM is real ... I used those little cages for one season. Waste of money!

As for the size of the cages. cherry tomatoes require 16" of space unpruned while regular tomatoes require 21" of space unpruned While beefsteak tomatoes require 24" of space unpruned. Well 16×pi equals 50 (over 50" of remesh) 21×pi equals 66" 24×pi equals 75" A pruned tomato plant regardless of type could do with only 12"

I like using chain link fence for my pole bean trellises. Easy to get leftover lengths in the suburbs.

I’m one of those people that bought that tomato wire you’re showing but I put it around a new plant because of cats rubbing up on everything

I have used tomato cages for years. Never had any problems with them. If they start to sag under the weight of tomatoes, I just support them with a post of some kind. And they are cheap to buy. Also no unrolling, forming, or cutting.

I like growing romas on straw or leaf mulch. If yer garden gets night light the tomato worms are gonna find you. when you go out in the morning your plants will all be turned over cause your local possums love tomato worms as much as slugs. we use those cages for flower supports.

1st year gardening and my wife keeps telling me to just go buy those little cages at home depot for like $9 apiece. No thanks. I'm going to try this instead.

I took my old pieces of junk like this and put 8-10 foot stakes down through it. That worked out well.

I was given 20 of those tomato cages you get at the store. I was given the big ones and they work okay. The small ones suck! Definitely a waste of money

I kept eyeing those things at the store and wondering if I should buy them or not. Thank you for your advise to not buy them and do something else for trellises.

Tie Wraps are not the ideal tying method but for outside black tie wraps last a lot longer than white ones.

We use a stake inside the tomatoe cage. Works great. The tomatoes do not tip over. We've done it this way for ova 40 years.

I use bamboo I get from Landscaping jobs/or left on the side of the road. I hate cages....you cant get in there and prune too easy.

I fell for it! Fortunately, I didn't pay a dime for them. They were given to me. I now use cattle panels and make my own cages out of the concrete wire like yours. When I see someone buying them at the store I always tell them that they are wasting their money.

Tomato cages are around a buck. That's cheap enough for a small, round, teepee-like frame. And they're stackable. Flip it upside down, twist the long 'leg' wires together, and cover it with plastic wrap and you've got a pretty sizable creche
