A short original piece of music inspired by a Twitter post from the account of the prospective show Origins of the Laoich. I've had this in a near-completed state for a while, but decided to hold off on posting it because I figured that Halloween would be the perfect time for it.
The Baobhan Sith (pronounced bah-van shee) is a fae creature from Scottish/Celtic mythology, often referred to as the "Vampire of the Highlands". Appearing as a beautiful, often red-haired woman, she entices unwitting victims to dance with her, tiring them out so she can slit them with her claws and drink their blood. With this piece, I sought to capture a scene of someone, maybe an old man warning a traveler about to head onto the Highlands about the danger of the Baobhan Sith, who is represented by the voice parts.
Wanting to emphasize her otherworldliness, I separated the voices from the rest of the ensemble, and doused the solo singer in reverb in order to make her sound transient, almost like she wasn't fully present. I followed her up in the melody with the bass flute, because I felt that its resonant and breathy quality was perfect for the atmosphere I was trying to set. The whistle and accompanying laugh are the invitation to dance, and the cello and viola lines were meant to emulate the use of fiddle in folk music. The final laugh is the Baobhan Sith's attack, ending the dance and the piece as a whole.
I envisioned a sort of foggy setting to where this attack occurred that the old man is warning the traveler about. To create the proper atmosphere that would evoke this setting, I first added the ship's bell, which plays randomly throughout the piece, and then the Celtic Harp, in order to create a steady resonant sound that would go well with both the underlying strings drone and the melodic segments. After that I added the Lion's Roar, which I felt had a nice creepy sound that was perfect for what I wanted, and then the resonant boom, a sound that is subtle and yet helps greatly in accentuating multiple moments. The rainbirds were the last addition, and I thought they tied everything else atmosphere-wise together wonderfully.
I hope you enjoy!
