Incredibly useful and it helped me a ton - I normally spray directly into the throttle body or disassemble the throttle body housing and clean it with a nylon brush. Your method is better in that you use towels from the outside to protect all of the sensors around the throttle body. I just did this for my 2007 ES 350 and like you said, when I started it , the ignition threw codes and the engine unfortunately had a misfire, and let the car run out some of the throttle body cleaner solution while misfiring ... - HOWEVER: I then turned off the car, disengaged the battery terminals and put my headlights on the 'on' position, while the battery was completely disconnected in order to drain the car of electricity. (This sets the car in a factory restart..) , I then turned the headlights back onto the 'off' position, reconnected the battery terminals, and started the car. It fired up perfectly and the idle sounds much better. Thank you for your help ! ! !

You shouldn’t use carb cleaner on a throttle body. It works but it’s very harsh on the rubber and seals inside the intake manifold. They make a throttle body cleaner for that application. Toyotas use a different kind of rubber so if you have genuine parts and seals you should NOT use a carb cleaner in this way. That stuff is meant for carburetors not throttle bodies. Very different automotive parts

To further elaborate without getting into the complexities carb cleaner also does not evaporate as fast or cleanly as throttle body cleaner. You’re more likely to suck all that stuff up into the internals and wear at those seals. That being said this will work to an extent but the best way to clean this all would be to remove the intake manifold, replace the seals, clean it without power going to any sensors, and to use the correct cleaner. With this generation 2GR-FE engines the intake manifold can also have extra valves that control runner length if you use carb cleaner on those engines you’ll be buying a new intake manifold and they’re quite expensive. It also will dry all the plastic on those manifolds and lead to warping and other issues. End of the day be careful what you put in your Toyota engine, they’re built well and last forever but to get the best life you gotta do things right.

Many carb cleaners are marketed as carb and throttle body. As for the seals part, inside a carb has many seals, plugs and o rings. Sooo...meh

I've seen throttle bodies @ 100,000 miles that were TOTALLY black with Carbon. Removal and meticulous cleaning was required. After that, good for another 75,000-100,000 miles.

Use only a throttle body cleaner , not a carbeurator cleaner . I would not use a paper towel such as that for drying hands , etc . But use Scott Brand of " shop towels " that are blue , thick and resist tearing . If a piece of towel falls into the throttle body you will have problems .

Sir, don’t move the plate with your fingers you can make a damage to the throttle gears. Switch the key to on and without turning on the engine press the accelerator, throttle should open.

I have a Rav4 2006 and I touch and move gently the plate. Scotty Kilmer and The Car Care Nut say the plate can be moved gently.

The Car Care Nut and another KZbinr I trust says use your finger but push the throttle plate slowly and gently. Use THROTTLE BODY cleaner to be safe. Just the s@me, if you are cleaning the amass Air Flow Sensor use MAF Sensor cleaner only!!!!

From all these comments this guy did it all wrong 😅 yikes. When I did it I unplugged the negative terminal. And specifically used "throttle cleaner " and did not open the throttle. I removed the throttle and cleaned both sides of it.

I think this happened to me, now the throttle doesn’t do anything I manually opened a Sequoia 2UZ 2001 throttle body Is cable operated but the cable doesn’t do the job, electric motor do So, how can i recalibrate the trothle position sensor again, need i a scanner?

Unplug/disconnect the negative battery post, and you should be fine with the car off.
