The scene with uncle Arthur and Serena dipping the bananas in chocolate was obviously a take on I Love Lucy and the chocolate conveyor belt scene between Lucy and Ethel. Bill Asher (Liz’s husband and Bewitched director) was the director on I Love Lucy and clearly he was plagiarising himself. The trouble is, it just wasn’t funny in Bewitched. The scene just didn’t work. Serena was never funny, and by today’s standards, Uncle Arthur isn’t funny either. It’s very dated. It looks dumb as he threw the bananas into the fridge in clumps. How is that funny? …Bewitched was great when it didn’t try too hard and slapstick was never really the style on the show the way it was in I Love Lucy. Serena and Uncle Arthur were slapstick and camp characters and they made the show stupid, whereas it was usually more modern and smart in its earlier days. Earlier on it challenged ideas about minorities and class and gender stereotypes but with Serena/Arthur it descended into cheap camp. I never felt Serena was a very interesting character. She was too cheesy and corny. The best episodes of Bewitched are the earlier episodes which focused on the relationship between Darrin, Samantha and Endora, as well as the shenanigans of the advertising agency. That was the heart of the show. Later on, as York became more absent and they had to find fill-ins to replace him, and then the transition to Sargent, the show went into decline and was never the same again. None of the episodes with Dick Sargent and Serena and all the later time travel episodes, worked. They were cringey, and I’m a Bewitched fan. Especially the lochness monster episode. Probably the worst episode in Bewitched. Shows like this are always best in their earlier incarnations when the premise of the show isn’t tampered with. Liz looked bored as the show went on for years, and she always sounded as if she had a cold in later episodes. She sounded blocked nosed and strange and looked like she was sleepwalking through each episode. Even the magic choreography got more boring. She just began clicking her fingers to do every magic trick as the series progresses. What made Bewitched great was all the Choreography and incantations the witches would do. When that went, and with Sargent’s lacklustre sarcastic performance and emotional range, the show just tanked. They shouldn’t have tampered with the original chemistry, storylines and magic.
