If Dick Sargent was the first Darren then most people wouldn't have liked Dick York as the second Darren. It's just psychological that York was better because he was first. That's just how it is with human nature.

I didn't like Dick York in most of the episodes. He's toxic. All he ever did was yell and complain about the very nature of his wife, and she took it in stride most of the time. Sargent was a much kinder, gentler husband, and one that she actually deserved.

Well, if Dick Sargent had taken the role from the beginning, there would've most likely NOT have been a second Darrin, thus no Dick York and no comparison between the two. The one thing i've heard about Dick Sargent is that he was reliable. This is not a knock against Dick York. This man gave his all for BEWITCHED through pain. Many would've given up but, he didn't until he could no longer continue. I've said it before, it's tough to walk onto an established show and replace a lead actor that people have come to identify with. But to hate someone, and I think some fans do hate Dick Sargent, just because he wasn't York is a sad commentary. To go after his private life, as some fans have in their comments, is also a sad commentary. I remember both of these men as kind and generous but, Dick Sargent couldn't live his life as he wanted, until late in life because of fear and hate in our society back then. I say, remember the message of BEWITCHED, a message of acceptance, tolerance, and understanding. Oh, add love to that list, something we could use more of these days.

@@zaafirzen5934 I always thought so too. I just don't get why people like Dick York so much. I mean he was probably a great guy in real life but as Darren he was a jerk. As a kid to me he seemed mean and I always thought Samantha could do better. The second Darrin was more accepting of Samantha

I love the clip at 1:00. Darrin reaffirms his love for Sam and their family. He always did that, while Larry more than once suspected Darrin of cheating on Sam. I think because Larry had a roving eye, he felt most men did, and he'd jump to conclusions. Sam warned Darrin that she'd know if he were interested in another woman. 🙂

I just read that Sony wants to attempt ANOTHER "Bewitched" movie. Wasn't the 2005 disaster bad enough? No way to top what Montgomery & Co. achieved in making the series.

Firstly, BEWITCHED wasn't cancelled. It actually had heen renewed by ABC for another year. The show ended when Elizabeth Montgomery decided to end it, partly for personal reasons and she wanted to more on. Secondly, the rstings did drop a bit, but things were changing in the country and TV, but it still held its own against ALL IN THE FAMILY, and on a Saturday night. Remember, BEWITCHED aired for eight years, longer than any show of its type at the time. Now to blame one person for the decline of BEWITCHED is not only wrong, but unfair. I enjoyed both Darrin's, but in a different way. It isn't Dick Sargent's fault that Dick York had to leave. In fact, Sargent was the first choice to play Darrin. Like I said, I enjoyed both portrayals, but they were different. York was a fine comedic/dramatic actor, a bit over the top. Sargent was less over the top, but a good physical actor, when needed. But what Dick Sargent and the writers did do was to calm the character down, which I liked. I hated it when the writers had York's Darrin yelling at Sam so much. That got a little old. Sam got tired of it, too, sending Darrin to the couch a couple of times and leaving a couple of times after an argument. Yes, they got back together. Dick Sargent%s Darrin, he may raise his voice a bit to express his displeasure at something, but he seldom yelled at Sam. This shows to me a more mature relationship. Liz even commented that she felt that he had come to terms with who she is. In fact a line in the good ferry episode where Darrin actually says it. So each portrayal had their own good qualities.

Bewitched ranked #72 out of 78 shows during its final season. It wasn’t holding its own; it had become one of the lowest rated shows in primetime.

Actually. BEWITCHED finished second to BONANZA in its first season and in the top ten in its first five years. TV GUIDE ranked the show 50th all time TV series. They ranked BEWITCHED in the top ten of all time comedies.

York's leaving was the beginning of the show's end. Barely two years after Sergeant replaced him the ratings slid so far the show was canceled. Personally, I just couldn't make the romantic connection to Sam with another man. Reminds me of a '72 election slogan but best not to write it here. It was after all a family show.
