TrojanJustin She was one of the bravest persons I’ve known of. She had been diagnosed as having terminal cancer even before she landed the role of Gladys Kravitz. She kept it a secret from the other cast members, probably until the weight loss became severely apparent - meaning she was so far gone that neither she nor anyone else could ignore it any more. How she could have been so professional in the face of impending death tells me she was morally strong - probably more so than I ever would be, were I in her situation.

Alice appeared as Mrs. Kravitz for the first two seasons of Bewitched and had already been diagnosed with terminal cancer prior to shooting even beginning. Somehow, though, she willed herself to continue working, pushing ever forward and shooting her last episode, “Prodigy,” a few months before it actually aired. Sadly, Alice died on March 3, 1966, at the age of 48. Herbie J Pilato, author of numerous classic TV books, including several definitive works on Bewitched, explains, “Both Elizabeth Montgomery and then-husband William Asher, the show’s main director and producer, adored Alice Pearce and were devastated when the actress died. Pearce had suffered from cancer for a good portion of the second season of Bewitched. If the last few episodes of the second year are viewed closely, it is clear that the disease had taken its toll on the actress. She was painfully thin and, to bulk her up, the wardrobe department outfitted her with additional layers of clothing. It was a bitter-sweet moment when Pearce, who was nominated for an Emmy for her role, won that year, posthumously. Her [second] husband, director Paul Davis, accepted the award on behalf of his wife.” doyouremember.com/126352/what-happened-mrs-kravitz-from-bewitched

Bewitched prefigures some of the great conversations of our own times in this way. In many ways it is a show about the disclosure of supernatural phenomena (UFOs and advanced intelligences) which was both a big topic at the time and has now become even more "phenomenal." Woven into the narrative are so many themes such as feminism, fear of "other", homosexuality and difference which all play upon and are part of the archaic revival threads of topics which were certainly quite taboo at the time of the production of the show and even now remain very much part of an alternative new age sub-culture. Like all great and influential art forms, it was both within the zeitgeist of its time and also way ahead of its time.

Sometimes she snooped; other times, she stumbled into an incident. After awhile it becomes impossible to ignore all the incidents. They are no longer coincidences, and one wants to understand what really goes on. I know Bewitched is just a sitcom, but I wish in retrospect Mrs. Kravitz had been better treated notwithstanding the dream in which Mrs. Kravitz finds out.
@stanloretta923 жыл бұрын
I don't know what else they could've done, though- in that dream, it's established that if Mrs. Kravitz does find out the truth, Samantha and Tabitha ultimately end up being taken by the government.
@LoesserOf2Evils3 жыл бұрын
@@stanloretta92, yes, I know. If the Stephens had let Mrs. Kravitz know the truth, it certainly would have ruined her as a character. In fact, the show did an episode on that theme: the Stephens tell all their mortal friends. Larry turns out to be megalomaniacal and wants to take over the entire world. The Kravitzes turn the neighborhood into a spectacle. Everyone, friends, family*, and strangers alike, petition for wishes. The federal government tries to get Samantha to join in the Cold War against the Soviet Union; and move them to a military base for their own protection. Fortunately, it’s just a dream Samantha conjures up on Darren. (“I Confess.”) There are other episodes: Aunt Clara’s Thanksgiving zap. The witches as troubadours. The four witchly Stephens children. The Kravitzes would have been dropped, no doubt, because the comedic tension would have been lost. But another nosy neighbor probably would have been introduced in their stead. Still, over the years I’ve become disappointed on how Mrs. Kravitz was treated, and I wish something could have been done about that. But I have understood all along nothing could have. Thanks for your comments. Footnote * Darren’s family, that is.
