In regards to dementia I work in a dementia service and diagnose people with dementia. Her team can’t just assume she has dementia. Actual professionals have to do that. Drugs and alcohol can also cause dementia. of course not everyone gets to that stage but sometimes dementia might just pick you. Scans don’t always prove a dementia but if they found some medial temporal lobe atrophy on the scans alongside other things then the diagnosis is likely correct. People with dementia do have capacity to make decisions for themselves until they can’t. You can make someone your lasting power or attorney for future reference but if someone still has capacity the LPA doesn’t necessarily have to make decisions .. it’s mostly effective when a person really cannot make those decisions. For example I am my older sisters LPA but she’s absolutely fine and so I don’t need to make any decisions for yet… only when and if she cannot make those decisions, or unless she states otherwise. For the most part memory loss is gradual so that’s why to many it may not appear as though she has a dementia. With time it will get worse. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk x
