Being a singer myself and someone that sings covers of original songs often, it's a bit irritating when someone says "Oh its nothing like the original" or "So and so did it better". The whole point of a cover is just that - A COVER. It's a cover of an original song not always intended to sound exactly like the original which, lets face it, it's never going to. It's a cover version of an original song in the covering singer's own style and voice. That is all it is intended to be. I wish more people understood this and just enjoyed a cover of a great song for what it's meant to be, which again, just a cover. With that being said I absolutely love this cover by Beyonce! xoxo

It doesn't have to sound like the original but the vocal should be as good as the original which this one isn't. It's sung in tune but the tone and dynamics are dead compared to the original by Rose Royce. Also the production and backing track is pretty bland as well.

And people prefer on rendition to other renditions. Why is it invalid for someone to say that “so and so did it better” (i.e. “I prefer the rendition by person X”)? Someone may not prefer your rendition of a song. You’re not entitled to people liking your rendition.
