CBSE WITH SUDHIR SCIENCE CHAPTER 12 Notes for BEYOND EARTH Question : Why was recognising patterns of stars useful to travellers? Answer : Recognising stars and their patterns was a useful skill for navigation in the olden times. Before the arrival of modern technology or even before the invention of the magnetic compass, it helped people, particularly sailors and travellers, in finding directions at sea or on land. It is still used in emergencies as a backup method. Question : What is a constellation? Answer : A constellation is a group of stars that form a recognizable pattern in the night sky, often resembling animals, mythological figures, or objects. These patterns are typically used for navigation, timekeeping, and storytelling across different cultures. Modern astronomy officially recognizes 88 constellations, which divide the sky into 88 specific regions. Examples include Orion (the hunter), Ursa Major (the great bear), and Leo (the lion). Question : Explain the constellation Orion. Answer : The constellation Orion is often represented as a hunter. There are three stars in the middle, which represent the belt of the hunter. Some people imagine that the hunter Orion, followed by his dog (constellation Canis Major), is battling a bull (constellation Taurus). Canis Major contains a star called Sirius, which is the brightest star in the night sky. Question : Why is the Pole Star considered significant for navigation? What is it called in India? Answer : Because the Pole Star appears stationary in the North direction, which helps to locate the North direction in the Northern hemisphere. It is called Dhruva Tara. Question : What is light pollution? What is its negative impact on astronomy? Answer : Light pollution refers to the excessive and intrusive artificial light produced by human activities, especially in urban areas. It affects the natural darkness of the night sky and disrupts astronomical observations. Light pollution reduces our ability to observe the stars and planets. Question : How big is the Sun? Why does it look small? What is its distance from earth? Answer : Sun is about 100 times bigger than the Earth in diameter. It looks so small because it is very far from the Earth. The average distance between the Sun and the Earth is about 150 million kilometers. This distance is also referred to as 1 Astronomical Unit (AU), which is used as a standard unit of measurement in astronomy to describe distances within our solar system. Question : Which are the two closest stars to Earth? Answer : The Sun is the closest star to Earth. The star located closest to Earth, apart from the Sun, is Proxima Centauri. The distance from earth is about 269000 AU. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star and is much smaller and cooler than the Sun. Question : Why is Venus hotter than Mercury even though it is farther from the sun? Answer : Because of its thick and dense atmosphere which can trap heat and therefore temperature soars. Mercury however, has almost no atmosphere so it quickly loses whatever heat it absorbs from the sun. Question : Why was Pluto downgraded from planet to dwarf planet? Answer : When it was discovered, it was called a planet of the Solar System. But later, when similar more small objects were discovered, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 2006 redefined the requirements of an object to be called a planet. As per this definition, these smaller objects, including Pluto, are now called dwarf planets. Question : What is the distance of moon from earth? Answer : The Moon is about 3,84,000 km away from the Earth.
