She is selfish, though. Her goal of making Madoka happy is actually the goal of making Madoka happy "with Homura." She does not believe that Madoka can be happy in her godform - whether or not Madoka is happy in her godform (I believe that she is, as she made a conscious, autonomous decision to make that wish) is irrelevant - and sets about to make Madoka happy and present, rather than miserable and *not present.* It is Madoka's relationship with Homura that matters to Homura, not so much Madoka's happiness. That is not to say that Homura's decisions are evil or that she is a bad person. She is a flawed, broken person.

I am so happy and impressed to finally, after ten years, have a video I can point to as someone who understands the source and respect the themes. Nice to see critical analysis isn't as dead in the fandom as I had feared. Well done.

I feel this as a fellow ADHD KZbinr. I've also been working on a video for 2 years, so to see this being done really inspires me. You did a fantastic job rationalizing and explaining different perspectives on viewing Homura. The breakdown of Camus and Nietzsche's philosophies was not only educational but also entertaining. I also appreciate the extra detail you took to tie in Sigmund Freud (I totally missed that on my 3 watches). To see it connected gave me an entirely new perspective and opened up further interpretations. Additionally, looking into Gen Urobuchi further reinforces that you really did your research, which speaks for itself! I really liked the quotes you used to back up your argument points. You gave us all something precious here, which is the gift of knowledge itself, so thank you for such a wonderfully put-together video essay :)

aaaaaa I know!!! it's been more than 10 years and people just belive Homura is bad because that's her persona or something, but they didn't get it, like I know madoka has a lot of symbolism the teeth, the chairs, flowers, dolls, even some of the fruits, etc. and some of them will say "it wasn't that good" but, they weren't there. The time it took to analyse each chapter when it was airing because "that's a lot of different chairs in a single room and there is too little people" and others saying "for some reason this reminds me of Faust and I don't know why". Even after, when the DVD and BD where out people looking for different things, like "why the siren and the unicorn?" in the recopilation movies why did they add the cementary scene, what was the purpose, why they need to add bone crunching sounds in the Mami scene. and sometimes is a lot for a 12ep anime. not counting the real life circumstances like the storm that delayed the last episodes. I was there when it was on season, I was there with everyone losing their minds in ep 3, 8, 10. I watched Rebellion in the movie theater. also when people dropped the series in ep 1 because it was too cute. I'll be honest, when the season was starting I watched madoka because Aoki Ume did the desings and then my world was different. Anyways, I really liked all the essay, Homura is misunderstood by people who only see in black and white. and those who refuse too see more because "is not that deep" I would love too see you talking about all the other topics, like the clara dolls, which are an important part in the rebellion plot.

Homura in the series: Okay 👍 *she fights wraiths* Homura in Rebellion: Okay 👍 *she throws all mortality, self love and will to live out the window as hard as she can, for Madoka, who obviously told her to stop doing that* On a serious note i think its less "Homura did nothing/everything wrong" or more "Homura tried her best to do what she perceived was right. There was some wrong and some right to her actions."
@JackCPlaysGf6 ай бұрын
I don’t know if you will see this since I’m very late to the party, but this is one of the best analyses I have ever witnessed on anything and I’m shocked it’s not more popular. I recently finished the series and rebellion and I really felt a need for explanation because I knew that Homura wasn’t evil, and that something wasn’t clicking in my brain. Tying Homura’s actions back to several EXTREMELY EARLY things in the movie, and even the scene with Madoka and her mother is so heartwarming because it helps me understand this character a lot better. The constant symbolism with the pomegranates, the lyrics of the dolls, the dolls themselves, all explaining wordlessly in little bits of their own affect on Homura and symbolism of her true feelings. All the quotes taken truly do tie expertly into your psychological analysis, which is something I personally can they enough of and love to see how people take it on. It was nice to see a few hints of comedy here and there in between your amazing tone for a lot of this. I think the final conclusion boils down to this: Homura is a girl who truly didn’t believe in herself, or much else. She got her first kindness from Madoka which sparked something in her, but not quite enough. That was when she was led astray by the witch that Madoka and Mami saved her from. This is what sparked true love (regardless of what kind) in Homura. She still had that timidity in her soul however, which is why the end of the first timeline forced her to watch her only love die in front of her, with her believing it was all her fault for being to cowardish to make a contract. So she made a wish out of pure desire for the one she loved. (Btw people calling it selfish makes no sense to me because, when it comes down to it, she’s doing it all for Madoka, and really just Madoka. People can’t see it as selfishness because it’s truly not a black and white issue as you said) She goes back in time, and she believes she is able to help Madoka as Madoka helped her. However, it all ends once again when Walpurgisnacht arrives. She repeats this cycle again and again, suffering more each time, and making Madoka more likely to become a magical girl as well due to her power growth. One of the timelines even forced her to be sacrificed by Madoka just to go back and do it again, after promising she would save her. The anime timeline is when she puts on a neutral and colorless facade to drill the idea of Madoka not becoming a magical girl through serious means, even going as far as to threaten to murder Sayaka to save her from acting drastic and making a contract. (My favorite scene where I found out who Homura was is when she broke down on the bench telling Madoka to “realize there are people who care about her” which is what made me understand who she was.) In the final moment, she says it’s worse, and Madoka refutes that saying how it’s ok, she will always be with her, and that she’s happy. Homura was fooled by this, and didn’t have the guts to stop Madoka then, forcing her to fly off into godhood. Her journey of the loss of faith she experienced wasn’t because she just didn’t believe in Madoka, she didn’t believe in the Goddess Madoka. The world wasn’t what she would have wanted and she was truly suffering for it anyways, which Homura hates herself for not stopping when she has the chance. She lets herself fall into despair as one final attempt. When she is rescued by Madoka however, she doesn’t hesitate. She refuses to let Madoka suffer any more and takes her goddess powers away, and creates a reborn world where she can live out her wish: to meet Madoka again and to protect her as a girl, not a goddess. She believes this action was unforgivably sinful, calling herself “evil” and “a demon” which is what some of the audience chose to believe. Believing Homura here is misunderstanding everything the team sought out to achieve. In the true end, she is doing all of this out of the 15th doll’s incarnation, LOVE. It was all because of love, which truly is a madness. One that Homura had ever since she was first saved by Madoka and Mami. This is truly her wish coming true and she isn’t in the wrong. She is flawed, which is what makes her so human, but she isn’t wrong, evil, and certainly not a demon. Holy hell that was a lot of writing, but that’s my understanding. I too believe she will be redeemed in the final installment this winter. I genuinely want you to understand just how unbelievably amazing you are for dissecting all of this. I wouldn’t have been able to discover who Homura REALLY was and how she truly is showing us all what *love* is. This has solidified Puella Magi Madoka Magica as my favorite anime ever, and like you, it has ruined my life 🥲. Thank you for this video. Your ADHD 2-year journey is also very relatable to me lmao. Subbed and liked. Great Done. Well Job. (P.S. Homura absolutely is best girl. I have my best girl, but she is best girl for all time.)

This video has to be my favorite youtube video out there. Homura means so much to me i felt (funnily enough) in despair at the search for analisys that didnt unecessarily villanaized Homura and protrayed her in this light of pure evil when she is the most human there is, i may say my hope of finding one has found itself in this video and what a wonderful video. I kid you not i started wanting to cry at some parts of the video because you just get me, you are the analysis of Homura i was looking for, one who questioned what was being presented to us and not just try to guide itself by pre established values such as evil and good and nothing deeper just a yandere with no redemption. i have to admit although i love philosophy im still very young and have barely consumed philosphy texts outside of my school ethics class which has helped me a lot with guiding myself now that ive watched Madoka Magica again I so badly want to get into Nietzsche, i see some ideas of my own in the things you touched of him and i find myself wanting to read about him even more knowing how Homura is influenced by his philosophy. Homura is a character that absolutely deserves all this analysis and more, she is begging to be analyzed yet people only do so between the restricting roles of good and evil, black and white etc etc. Is true, trying to fit Homura into good or evil is a debate that will never get anybody anywhere because she isnt any and trying to give her a dictatory role that doesnt fully capture her will always fail. I srs dont know how else to explain how much this video made me happy; i only watched Madoka Magica two years ago so i wasnt when the fandom was at its prime, but i still love this anime very deeply and specially Homura, a wonderfully crafted character that i will forever treausure, i am beyond in love with this video Homura for best girl indeed also i read the caption and i woud love your take and some topics you didnt finally include in the script, specially the feminism and feminity in madoka magica cause oh boy there is a lot to talk there and is a fresher and certainly more accurate read in my opinion then those edgy dudes who categorize madoka magica as "not like other magical girls" because its not that type of magical girl anime whatever that means considering Madoka Magica is mostly analyzed by guys who find zero to no exposure of feminist topics on madoka magica, i would love to hear your take on it also all those other topics you cut out as well, your thought process is amazing and i love philosophy and madoka magica which luckily is filled with philosophy

Something that always got me was that Homura didn't have a real set goal until a timeline where a Madoka that knew about things asked her to prevent it. Her wish was simply to protect her, but she didn't really think about what to protect her from, because she wouldn't learn about anything beyond Walpurgis until later. Homura didn't start off knowing about the system, she didn't know about the fate of her friends, the incubators, and witches until she learnt over time, that's where she made her mission, not from when she made her wish. Madoka would've remained the same in every timeline, regardless if it wasn't the "original" that asked Homura to prevent it, she would've most likely said the same had she knew about these things in the original timeline. The reality is also that, Homura is the only reason Madoka is a god in the first place, why is it so awful that she does what she does to what is effectively her own indirect creation. However, what I think is missed is that the incubators were relentless at breaking the law of cycles, if Homura didn't do it, they would eventually find a way to crack it, which during Rebellion they were already doing. Why would she give them a chance at meddling more than they have? not now, not ever.
@theclaimerofbones2 ай бұрын
This was a great video, well made and interesting. It nicely analyzes things, and I've rewatched it a few times now. It made me think about a few points: Regarding Homura's wish, I do not understand why people are so obsessed with her potentially making a "better wish", but NEVER question Madoka's final wish-which is worded in a very similar way, desiring the power to do something rather than just for something to happen. To me, it gives the same reason as Homura's- that she wants to protect others herself, and that she feels useless for simply watching the ones she cares about suffer. I wonder if it's maybe because people see Madoka as utterly perfect, the absolutely moral character, and do not question anything she does. The show itself illustrates how deeply selfishness and selflessness are linked, through Sayaka's story, that I question why at all there is a need to divide homura into "purely selfish" and Madoka into "purely selfless". I hope that in the next movie, it does not simply revert all of Homura's actions and have her be "saved" perfectly, even if there's a good chance that's what Madoka would try to do. Even if Homura's world is going to end, having it end in that way would feel like taking her choices away yet again, and forcing her to accept something she could never accept.
@mimikyuno2 ай бұрын
thank you so much!! and that’s an interesting observation, and for me, I honestly think the audience tends to do that because Homura herself does that - to Homura, Madoka is perfect, while she herself is the worst. Madoka is Good and she is Evil. Madoka is God and she is a Demon. And I think the audience then just buys into Homura’s very biased view of herself and Madoka, also led by the narrative that keeps subtly comparing them to one another. but then when you look at it more closely, you see that they are both just two flawed teenage girls, and quite similar.
@theclaimerofbones2 ай бұрын
@@mimikyuno You're welcome! And your reason is probably right- Homura's perspective in rebellion makes herself out to be evil, and probably not helped by that the only interaction she has with another after her choice is with Sayaka, who is rather prone to being biased. To me, it seems as if Homura was on the way to letting go of her rather black-and white way of looking at the world when she learned that Madoka may not have been as happy with her choice as she told her, only to enforce it further thanks to her self loathing. She really is a complicated character. Although in my case, the show's comparisons between the two, especially with ep 10, made the similarities between them seem more obvious than the differences. Maybe the difference lies in the kinds of media people consume as well- I'm quite used to characters being unreliable on their perceptions of themselves, or making rather extreme decisions. Sometimes though, I have to wonder if people aren't also partially affected by Madoka having the cutesy pink color scheme while Homura has the black-and purple dark color scheme.

In my country in highschool native language class is basically literature/philosophy/art, but it's taught in such a way, you're better off learning by heart and forgetting rather than understanding it deeper, unless you picked humanities. I'm actually more interested in his work now! I just wanna say, I've loved this anime since I was 14 and it definitely helped me through life, especially with how I sympathised and related to some aspects of the girls, especially Madoka. It's great to hear such insight on Homura's character compared to some other videos I've seen. I find it coincidentally amusing that when you stated it took 2 years to finish this project, I eyed at the description and it says 2 years ago. I might be the more easily distracted person here! I'm so thankful I've finally come across this video. With Walpurgisnacht Rising is updated to be around 2025 Winter, this video is a perfect piece to recall how fond am I of this series and why I love Akemi Homura so much. Back in 2012, all I understood was it's just love and friendship, and that love is "love." Nothing more to it, yet, doubt has always been daring to me to find what is it, and how is it to have one? A decade later, I stopped. It's nowhere, It's everywhere, It's anywhere, It's always here; Self. But what has costed me to find such conclusion? A dissolution of friendship that has become a foundation to my personality and hobbies. I'm still drawing, I'm still writing, but it took a complete 360 degree turning that now showing my "self" to others is so awkward. And love is just like that, you bare yourself to someone. And in that exact moment, you are no longer yours; You are not alone, You've connected with someone. Bloodlines, companionship, sentiment can be both a curse and a blessing. And it never is. For me to just simply love myself, giving into it, indulge my desire, as earthly as forever; To just experience myself. To live. It's always neutral. It's mutual. Self. Just myself. I do not object against having love for others, as I myself do love others for the sake of myself. Yet, Homura-chan right here... That friend I broke apart, when we first met, it happened close to the year of original series airing, and we were about in middle school. I was so looking up to that person. They were inspiration, they were like a door to the brand new world. But one day, they told me to leave them alone. Family and school can be difficult, I understand, Yet I did exactly as I was told, I left them. I seek new connection, I seek something to fill in that hole, That feeling, That longing, That I was a part of someone, Of something. None of individuals was exactly as I wish to for them to be for me, I also was exploited. While I blamed the one who decided to "try love," I know sometimes people just didn't know the better. As I did, That friend who barely speaks about their feeling went spiral and disowned me. Years later, I still long after something. Something to feel "me." Does it need to be a person? Does it need to be a character? Does it need to be a world? A perception? Alas unlike Homura, I abandoned everything and started anew. I'm still lucky that some of my old friends are still around and within my contact. Even though I often say I'm selfish (as I always put myself before everything else, to 'love' myself), my friends either deny that or saying that "I don't understand your kind of selfishness." I guess, for me, it's a form of survival. To find a meaning in this sea of chaos. But, for Homura-chan's case, for someone with their life perpetually stuck in the same month again and again, When initially she thought, she will just do it so none of us (Homura herself and Madoka) will regret it. But both of them didn't know the better what Kyubei actually was. So at this point, where Homura realizes the only way to keep her existence still comes across with Madoka is to keep looping the same month over and over again; Is Love a form of survival for her? To these days and even with this video, I still can't find answer, or rather, I'm too scared to ACTUALLY find the answer. As long as humanity remains, I think, we don't really need to think about it; whatever Love is. We go along with it, It's our fate. It's love. Ironically, sometimes the wordplay of "fate" in Japanese written in Kanji 運命 (un-mei) might be read as 定め (sadame) is, personally, a very broad that can be interpreted in English not just as a duty, role, destiny, setting, regulation; it could be obligation; a karma. Ah, I too can carry as much sin for I who is Heidegger enjoyer. Thank you for pointing out historical philosophy reference! Books are expensive in my area and I've been veeeeeery slowly catching up with the classics. Albert Camus is my current favorite and on-reading. Can't wait to see how Homura is going to figure out what to do with her ego manifested in the upcoming movie. The Rebellion was an embodiment of self-projection hellscape enough and I'm all for it!

This is so great I keep returning to this video to rewatch it. I especially like the editing in some parts, the choice of background music and idk, you explaining philosophical topics with those OST sounds oddly satisfying. Also, the link to your script doesn't seem to work, youtube is cutting it for some reason.

thank you so much for your comment, and thank you for letting me know about the link! I thought the issue was that the url was too long so I shortened it, but youtube now made adding clickable links to descriptions another privilege for those who have an “advanced identification”. i applied for it via the least dystopian method (which may require months and not even be granted), but hey fingers crossed! meanwhile i’ll leave the shortened link in the description box so it’s easier to copy paste. thank you again for your support! 💌

I don't usually leave comments like this, but I just wanna say this video was a treat to watch. As someone who gets sporadic motivation to write really long video essays about my current hyperfixation + philosophy all the darn time but never actually ends up doing anything about it, it was really inspiring to see a video like this. I watch way too many video essays, and they mostly come from really big channels entirely dedicated to regularly uploading video essay content, and it's encouraging to hear about a scrip that was in the works for two years and footage that took a whole summer to edit. I definitely have analyses that have been stuck in notes-app-hell for wayyy longer, and barely know how to put music over a video. Will definitely be subcribing, even if this video was an one-off thing. Wish I had friends who liked pmmm to share this to cause you definitely deserve more views.

It’s not coming out in January as we would’ve already gotten news, not only that but if the movie were to be released in before February then there would be leaks and stuff. Sry it was kinda long

But you can do evil things even though you're just doing your best. Most traumatized people are "just doing their best" but they most definitely need help because their actions are harming themselves and others

@ame-chan579 Жыл бұрын
What Homura did was evil? Yes. Was she wrong? Hell to the no. You have to take into consideration that Homura stripped Madoka of her own free will. That's....yes? That's kinda evil. However, no one that heavily criticizes Homura has ever taken into consideration that Madoka's decision is just a temporary solution to a complicated problem. And Homura has watched Madoka suffering because of her own decisions and Kyuubei's manipulation over *a HUNDRED* of times. Human mind and soul is only that strong and resilient, you know. If she loses her dreams and hopes is over. And, well, she refuses to give up without a fight. *Anyone who tries to do something over A HUNDRED OF TIMES refuses to give up* so she clings to her sole wish. In the end, she re does her meeting with Madoka, being strong enough to protect her. She doesn't look too happy about it, perhaps facing finally the expectative vs reality of her wish, hence why she falls at the very end of rebellion.
@memoryofsalem44742 ай бұрын
"I disagree with those who see her as evil" and youve entirely invalidated your opinion with one statement: Homura doesnt care about Madoka or what Madoka wants, she only cares about her version of Madoka, the girl who meeds to be saved by her, she doesnt respect her desires and treats her an object, a statue to worship but not a person wity free will. Yes, her behaviour can be explained by the time loop but that onky explains it, it doesnt excuse her later actions. Also, the nature of her original wish still shows that Homura isnt a good person, she didnt wish for Madoka to be revived or evn to go back in time just before walpurgisnacht so she could help Madoka and Mami. Speaking of Mami, Homura doesn't actually give a shit about her or anyone else besides Madoka, showing she clearly has some psychopathic tendencies, not aaying that makes her evil of course, Im saying that is kind of a warning for what Homura does later on. Homura IS evil and you not being able to see that kinda makes this entire video meaningless since well, you cant analyse a character if you dont actually understand the character.
@mimikyuno2 ай бұрын
@@memoryofsalem4474 “the nature of her original wish shows that Homura isnt a good person” 2:43 i have a whole chapter on her wish + idk man they’re all 14. and they all made “selfish” choices. sayaka saving kyousuke saying she doesnt care if she gets rewarded but actually does. kyouko telling sayaka to let familiars kill people till they become witches so they’re worth the trouble. and if we’re comparing wishes made in traumatic circumstances, why wouldnt mami ask for her whole family to survive the crash? she’s clearly selfish and evil for asking kyubei to only save herself. and what about madoka asking homura to keep repeating the past to save her? what about homura? what a selfish psychopath, asking someone to keep reliving a traumatic past so YOU can be spared 🙄 if we look at the series in black and white, right and wrong, good and evil then. they’re all psychopaths :) so like. is it that farfetched that none of them are actually Good or Evil, but that everyone has good and bad side, and everyone does good things and bad things…? including homura…? and as i said in the video… the categories of “good” and “evil” are too simplistic. the show is about the shades of grey that make up reality. literally. like, textually. it’s not even reading between the lines they say it multiple times, “the balance between hope and despair keeps itself at zero”. for every good action, an opposite bad action. all girls embody “Good” (as magical girls) and “Evil” (as witches) bc that’s literally the point. reality is not that simple, “oh this girl is a psychopath and this one is a saint”. and urobuchi has CLEARLY read nietzsche so take that as you will. but all his shows are very philosophical, so i think there is more to homura than what she herself says at the end of rebellion. SHE says she’s evil, bc she’s 14 and has a childish view of the world, that doesn’t mean she is. but hey i mean if you wanna see homura as an evil psychopath go ahead..? make it simple and easy to digest, this show has no deeper meaning. but i personally enjoy having nuance and seeing depth and meaning in the media i consume, without reducing it to childish black and white terms. (sidenote: i never engage in debates online bc you can never really sway someone’s opinion online but. homura slander is my exception. i might stop engaging though just fyi! still, thank you for watching and expressing your opinion! i appreciate it even though we disagree)
