We were at Sioux above Ponil the night of the flood in '15. The sound of the wind woke us up 10 seconds before it flattened our tents with 100 mph gusts. Our trek was cancelled in '18 due to the fire. Had an incredible North Country trek in '19. Camping in the Valle Vidal is my favorite memory among many. Philmont breaks your body and heals your soul.

Philmont put me on a path to building trails in the Sierra Nevada ranges and in the Grand Canyon. If it had never been for Philmont, and the love of the outdoors that scouting gave me, I don’t know what I would be doing now.

Beautiful place...1974. Wearing the buckle today and everyday. Thanks to all those fine leaders that helped shape me into the man I am today. And, thank you Mr. Phillips!

The Ute fire was truly a blessing in disguise since it has proved to be a long overdue wakeup call for land stewardship. Well done by everyone involved in this video.

3:06 That shot of the flags and the smoke in the background. It makes you realize how close Philmont was to the end of an era.

My experience with the Ute Park Fire was just life changing. I remember waking up in my house confused about why my mom's friend was in our house at 7:00 AM. She told me to just look outside. I look out and see a huge cloud of smoke just covering absolutely everything. Every house across my street had their sprinklers on, including mine. Scared, confused, and sad during all of this. I was a lot younger and didn't know the huge impact it had on Philmont. Watching this just gave me a whole new perspective on the fire. It was so sad that all the treks were canceled and people had to leave. Eventually, I had to leave and evacuate. I drove past Rayado to Miami (NM) and stayed at my friends for a while. Seeing planes in the sky to drop water onto the fire was normal after a while. As time passed, I had to drive through the canyon. As i looked out to see how devastating this was, it made me cry. The ash just covering the ground, seeing how close it got to camps and peoples houses. Now that it's 2023, I look back to the 2018 fire and say, "Wow. What a life changing experience." And it's hard to believe I went through 2 major fires on Philmont property. 2022 and 2018. Truly life changing and heartbreaking.

Another big test has come this summer of '22 as the Calf Canyon fire continues to spread. I hope more communities in New Mexico and beyond will adopt these mitigation techniques.

Ghost Adventures beat you to the St. James Hotel, but I'd love to do a paranormal investigation at Uracca Mesa. Especially after my experience at the campsite at the base of the Mesa.

I worked at Uracca Mesa in 1983. What's going on there is way beyond just some random ghosts stories..

My Philmont Trek # was 810/R2. Not certain if i wrote that correctly. From early 1990's. I think '91 maybe '92. I remember Urraca Mesa. Swear i heard people talking who were not there as well as horses running around in middle of night. Woke up and walked around. No horse hoof prints.
