Beyond The Routine: Sam Mikulak Episode 1

Sam’s dad replaced my hip. Funny thing about it, it was May 2013 and we made the appointment for May 23. I then asked him if I could go to a slalom ski race camp at Mammoth on May 10. He said I could do anything up to the surgery. So I went and we were training on the same slope as the women’s Olympic team. We had to time it so they would go then us. Well, because of my bad hip it made it difficult to carve my turns to the right, so I would rotate instead of carve. So what happened was that I rotated my ski tip into the slalom gate, spun around backwards and landed on my right shoulder! I could not do anything! When I went to the doctors, I found out that I had a full tear of my rotator cuff. Then began the nightmare of getting surgery on my shoulder after I had my hip surgery. The hip surgery went perfectly. I was walking the same day!
