Aurangazeb was battle hardened, tactical military general and shrewd politician. And he also had help of his sister Roshanara in imperial politics. This gave his a mass appeal even among the soldiers. On the other hand, Dara was inexperienced in all these but was relatively more tolerant. To become Emperor of such a great country like Hindustan, one needs to be ruthless.
