I am not going to repeat about Chhatrapati Shivaji's great administrative abilities, concern for the people of his Kingdom, respect towards womanhood, secular attitude and justness etc.Just half of these qualities are enough to make him great and revered. What makes him greatest among the grates is that, he changed the rules of the game. He made conquerors out of the poor conquered, who were battered to the hilt. One couldn't have fought a powerful, resourceful, deceitful and cruel enemy with the old Hindu war rules.Hindus weren't fighting in the night,they were not going out on the seas, they preferred to be defenders instead of attacking the enemies etc.etc. and this all was leading to their conquest by barbarians for centuries. Shivaji is legendary precisely because he understood this and bent all the warfare rules head on. He mostly attacked (the word is important, as it turned the usual defenders into attackers- boosting their confidence and reducing their enemy's) in guerrilla style irrespective of day or night. He killed Afzal Khan in a diplomatic meeting . It is being said that Khan attacked him first, but going by Shivaji's nature and preparations, it seems that he was determined to kill him even if embraced in friendly manner. He made several promises to Aurangzeb and coolly retracted. He looted Surat brazenly and mutilated Shasta Khan in a daring night attack while he was sleeping. The attack was led by Shivaji himself with only a handful of men in an encampment of 75,000 soldiers. In the raid, few of Khan's harem women were also killed (as it was pitch dark and whosoever came in the way was vanquished. All this was totally against the traditional Hindu warfare, but it terrorised the powerful enemy (Shasta khan literally ran away from Pune, though he had 1 lac army at disposal). These are just a few of his exploits, which were exemplary to the people to have the confidence to fight back the invaders. This shaped the future Maratha strategies and hence they could pay back the enemy in his own currency, no matter if they were called plunderers. This is what showed the world the power & spirit of the indigenous people. There is no such leader in our history(except Mahatma Gandhi in modern times), who inspired the utter powerless to overthrow the centuries old empire of the invaders. Before him, the invaders were having free run on almost all of the subcontinent for more than six centuries, and within 50-60 years they were all humbled by his people. P.S.- Shivaj was the only native Indian king in the recent history to have understood the importance of naval prowess. He meticulously built a powerful Navy and series of sea forts.
