I mean, I'd say it's a very valid way of writing a background relationship. And also plays into Clara's characterization in S9. It's been long enough that she's gotten over Danny's death and gotten a girlfriend, but instead of being part of her normal life, she can only be with her GF via the TARDIS.

All these youtube videos and articles saying Yaz is the first bisexual companion. Okay, sure, that's pretty great- but Jack DOES count (canonically bi, uses omnisexual in relation to show because it's sci-fi, which means that would theoretically apply to Yaz too) and I hate to bring her up but CLARA is bisexual! Did we all just block her entire run from our minds? She dropped names of past female love interests more often than the Doctor drops names! Obviously, I ship it, and I'm not a big fan of Clara but have a little respect, people. -end rant-
