30th May down the memory lane, marks a generational rebirth and Biafra Heroes Day
when the declaration of a split was pronounced and silence descended among men for the
memorial of great warriors who had fought till their last drops for the succession of what
would become a Republic of Biafra: land of a yellow sun and of hope, and in recognitions for
the labour of our heroes past, a star emerged in the sky. Late one afternoon in August 14,
1929 the Nigeria - Biafran professional boxer popularly known as Dick Tiger' was born Richard
Ihetu, as he embraced his humble village at Amaigbo; he rested deep in a
childlike abandonment, seemly free and excited in a serene atmosphere in Imo state Biafra land
Short enough to his fame, by sunrise on December 14, 1971 at his middle age 42, Dick Tiger
was diagnosed with liver cancer and passed away in a blink.
It was a tragic end for a Nigerian dream being extinguished, for the like of
a professional boxer and political activist, who lived a life that had so deeply immensely in
devotion to service that affected the Nigerian Boxing dream and a true hero in the history of Biafran succession.
Dick Tiger, a driven and ambitious man led his expedition to a self-
discovery for his ideology to expand his black man passion for boxing. He immigrated to
Britain for career advancement and later retired to the United State. Tiger became a two-time
undisputed world middleweight holder and helped shaped boxing during the 1950s and later
earned himself another dominating position as a Light-Heavyweight world championship in
1962 as he was popularly called the "King of the Ring'".
It was obvious that Dick Tiger fought two different battles in his lifetime: he faced his
deepest fears in the ring against his aggressive opponents and outside the ring fighting for his
political beliefs during the Biafra War. Notably, as the war broke during South-eastern
agitations for self-independence between the years 1967-1970 he served as a public relations
officer with the Biafra army and devoted his time with Biafrans and it was gathered that the
war made him sober and he raised awareness and sponsored the Biafra army with his
resources. In 1968, Dick Tiger was quoted saying, "Without Biafra, the championship title is
no good to me. Without Biafra, my title is nothing. The United States is a very good country,
a very nice country, but Biafra is my home. I was bom in Biafra. I will die in Biafra."
In the light of this, he tuned down an appointment for CBE from Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth I, as a protest for what he perceived as a lack of support by Great Britain to
champion the course to Biafra Republic. His patriotism for Biafra knew no bounds and was
fully set in motion not withstanding the Nigerian government views on his behaviour and
involvement in the war as utterly indifferent that led to his ban which made him relocated to
the United States with his family and retired peacefully from boxing. Tiger later worked as a
guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and later returned to Nigeria when his
health condition was critical and shortly before his death on 14 December 1971; the Nigerian
government had lifted his ban. His determination and accomplishments were strong-willed
and source of inspiration for remembrance.
