Definitely need this talk. I'm 27 and I took an art hiatus for years. I didn't go to college for anything art related like i wanted. My skill is that of some 15 year olds I see. Actually many 15 year olds are better than me. It's very discouraging, to the point where I am avoiding looking at others' art. Also, I find that I don't get inspiration or fire from better artists. They dont motivate me... I usually want to give up more instead. For me, it's better to take long breaks from others and just practice and then look back at my old work and pat myself on the back for progress. Really appreciate your tips... I'm trying to be fueled instead of snuffed out. 💛

Griffly Art I can relate way to much to this

I can kind of relate. In college I by chance took one painting class, my professor thought I was soo great she wanted me to go to art school but I didnt pursue it. I only started painting 2 years ago after going to a paint night and really loving it. I missed out on the chance to do more art in college or develop in the 5 years in between. Now im 27 and sometimes I have serious art envy at times and so I try to not focus on other artist as much and stick with the few art friends I have made in the last year.

Marnise Nicole Fine Art I've been drawing since I was 10 but never improved because I was told "art isnt a real job". I feel like I missed my window not because I'm 27 like you but because I was into it at s young age and didn't pursue it. I dont think it's too late for you. Your artistic ability is still in infant stage. I hope you get what I'm saying.... try not to be down on yourself. Remember that you've only been doing this a few years, so you are not behind your peers.

It’s definitely not too late. Your experience will give you a unique vision. You did not miss any sort of “window” to develop your art no matter your age. Start now and get yourself into a routine!

Griffly Art I completely get what you're saying. I had some of the same anxieties as you did, when I first started to consider pursuing art seriously. I made myself take some private drawing lessons, got my portfolio together and applied ( and got in) to art school (undergrad) at age 30. Apparently, admissions offices love "non-traditional" students because we've already developed a work ethic, and we're less likely to drop-out, so we're more likely to be accepted. I graduated 4 years ago, and it was worth it for me. It was an opportunity to be totally immersed in art 24/7 for 4 years. I had plenty of people to play off of, and learn from.

Just had my interview for art school a few days ago. I felt this xD the other kids were comparing portfolios, and when I saw them from afar..... I didn’t even wanna bring out my portfolio ☠️ Their artworks were amazing. Just hope mine was enough to get into art school. Love your videos. They helped me a lot through my insecurities enough to apply 😬😬

These seem like very good advice but I feel like it only works if you have a healthy ego or even a big one. I have a weak ass ego and I hate competition... As a teen having a "rival" made me give up on drawing, I only picked it back up as an adult (about 4 or 5 years ago). And I can't practice everyday, even though I wish my brain would allow me. If any other weak-egoed person is reading this : you don't have to be better than anyone, just do your thing, do it for yourself, do it because it brings you joy. If you look up to someone's work, maybe ask them for advice and observe. Maybe meet-up with your art friends for art sessions so you can find motivation. If they are confident about their own art they likely will be very supportive of you trying to get better, so don't be intimidated. Also remember your mediocre art will bring joy to someone. Think of it as making a cake, even if there is already a professionally made gorgeous cake on the table, people will still enjoy your small homemade cake, because it is cake and cake is delicious. Sometimes something more imperfect is more charming and relatable. So embrace your weird looking drawings, there's someone out there who will love them ❤️

Lockwie Lockwie I feel like it still applies in your case because you don´t necessarily have to compete with your “rival”. It is more of like an inspiration of where you want to be, but since you actually know the person, you know more about their work habits and feel more compelled to put in the work that they are putting in. If your “rival” is drawing everyday and is already way ahead of you, chances are that you will not catch up to them, but you will feel much better about yourself seeing all the progress you have made.

You're such an inspiration! Looking back, you did improve A LOT since I started watching your videos!! Something similar happened to me, but through instagram XD I found an artist my age, who is INCREDIBLY SKILLED and that really pushed me towards working harder and made me improve lots last year! - TIP= What I think helped me improve the most was writing down my weaknesses, and then write down ways I could improve on those areas. It was kind of like, giving myself homework I would do everyday, otherwise I would accumulate that for the following day XD Thank you for sharing this and making such helpful and motivational videos

I needed this. I always feel SO GUILTY of getting jealous of friends or people close to my age in art. It's like my pride of wanting to be "reliable figure" in art and help everyone the best i can -w- But i'll risk the rival thing( the admirer is easy, oh boy if i don't love kaneoya sachiko, ahmed aldoori and krenz cushart). I've been in a slump these days, with waaaay too complex drawing ideas and piss-poor execution

a very big role model to me is Jamie Hewlett, the creator of tank girl, among other things. His style is so lively and dynamic, while still being structured and very concrete. If you haven't checked him out, you most definitely should! (Also, i really really hope you will handle making two videos a week! They would be awesome to watch, as always!:))

I definitely know I do not spend enough time on my paintings as I should. I have contemplating it a lot lately. I mean master's spent months on there works at times and I spend 2-3 days on paintings at most. Most times I sit down without even a plan and just paint to paint, although I have been trying to come up with more concepts and plan out my pieces more. I really want to challenge myself to see what kind of work I could produce if I really focused on a piece for an extended time, planning a concept, spending time on it. This made me really want to take this plan an start it now instead of procrastinating.

Honestly there are so many artists that I follow across all of my social media that it's hard for me to narrow it down to a reasonable amount. I feel like you can learn something valuable from all artists, even if they may not be at the same skill level as you. Some of my favorites on KZbin are H. C. Brown, Minnie Small, Frannerd, Baylee Jae, MissKerrieJ, Audra Auclair, The Average Artist, SophiraLou, Emma Frew, FurryLittlePeach, trickywagon, greywick, Juicy Ink, alikiful and of course your channel! I know this list is super long but they're all great artists, and I learn(ed) different techniques from all of them. You should most definitely check them out if you haven't!

This is what I needed. Thank you for giving me this push. You're phenomenal. My role model is Jacquelin DeLeon and I don't have a worthy rival irl, if that isn't too egotistical to say? Like I kind of have a small townish area and the people I wanted to compete with have graduated now, and I feel I will let myself slack as a consequence. . .

this is such a good video because i feel like a lot of youtubers don't talk about the fact that you really do need a rival to succeed because it seems sort of negative but it really isn't. you're completely right! for a while i didn't have a rival and my art really started to stagnate. i was still making work and improving but it didn't have the passion it used to have and i was doing one sketchbook every three months instead of my usual one month sketchbooks. it's so important to compare your work!

I really love my art-class. It is about daring to express yourself no matter what level you're on. The pupils in the class are all the way from total beginners to artist-level (selling art) What is interesting to me is that at the end of each class there is usually a different person's art that has spoken to me the most. At the end of the last two classes two of the more beginner-level people actually created the best things in my taste and opinion.

It's funny because I posted a sketchbook tour this week too and I talk about how having someone being better than me at art kind of made me stop until I stopped seeing it as a competition and eventually found my inspiration. It's super cool to watch a video where somebody talks about the same thing that was on your mind but in a more succinct way, super cool
