Biber von Biber was a well respected musician and violin player of his time. JS Bach greatly admired him. As far as I know (not too far) Biber was a renowned violin player and a significant improver in the violin playing technique (as it would later become our beloved good old JSB). Biber's Passacaglia (normally played at the end of the Rosenkranz sonaten), predicts to a very strong degree the heavenly Chaconne of the second solo violin partita by our beloved good old JSB. Biber and Bach showed how the story of music, as the story of science, is a long and patient history of step by step improvements and small triumphs, that along the centuries became this treasury, our joy ad our pride, Western music. Thanks Brilliant Classics for illuminating our dark hours of quarantine.

@@toniodak8993 Thanks for your comment. You are not at all rude. JS Bach is not my spiritual leader (I do not know if I ever had any such light showing me the Right Way). He is one of the persons in the past I admire the most. With Beethoven, Bach music is the one that I spend more time hearing. As musical technique creator and teacher I believe Bach was a solitary figure in the growth and consolidation of western music. He was during his life one of many musicians of importance. With the passage of time, his figure departs more and more from the multitude of musicians of the baroque, becoming a solitary star. Possibly our times will never produce a musical figure of such distinction. But our time has advanced in science, philosophy, mathematics, poetry and prose, artificial intelligence, astronautics, and two centuries from now we will identify the big stars that today are busy pushing the frontiers of science and technology to unheard heights.

Splendid, I'm enjoying every moment of these sonatas. Biber was a genius melodist and a very inventive and "acrobatic" violin player. Thank you, your very well made and complete post is much appreciated. (a month later) I've been listening to the whole collection about 10 times in the last month, can't seem to get enough! I am particularly fond of the sonata No 2 in D dorian.

Wunderschöne und lyrische Interpretation dieser mysteriösen doch perfekt komponierten Sonaten mit seidigem doch gut artikuliertem Ton der Solovioline und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen anderer Instrumente. Der geniale Solist leitet das ausgezeichnete Ensemble im gut phrasierten Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Alles ist wunderbar!

This music seems to be a music that aspires to speak directly & solely to itself: all of us who listen are, in some odd sense, outsiders listening in - almost overhearing what the music says to itself. I have never heard this music before; I know not this composer's name; but if I could hold a violin, & prepare myself for this music, I believe it would have given me something beyond myself that I had never known before. And for that, I would bless this unknown man who had given me what, until these sonatas unfolded, was unknown about me ... to me.

Your Reply was very astute. I am Catholic (as was Biber, of course) and therefore the Theme of his magnificent composition has a Special Meaning for me. I don't know if this was Biber's (conscious) intention, but it had never even occurred to me that in listening to The Rosary Sonatas we were "eavesdropping," as it were, to SomeThing which is Divine. I think you are talking about Heinrich Ignaz Franz B i b e r (christened on 12 Aug 1644 in Wartenberg, Bohemia as Hennericus Pieber). In 1690 Emperor Leopold I awarded him a title of nobility (Truchsess) for his compositional work. From then on he was allowed to call himself "Biber von Bibern". Creo que está hablando de Heinrich Ignaz Franz B i b e r (bautizado el 12 de agosto de 1644 en Wartenberg, Bohemia, como Hennericus Pieber). En 1690 el emperador Leopoldo I le concedió un título de nobleza (Truchsess) por su trabajo de composición. A partir de entonces se le permitió llamarse "Biber von Bibern".

Check out other versions. This is good, but my favorites are Letzbor (1996) and Manze (2004). Letzbor´s version is powerful and rough, while Manze´s is spiritual and meditative. Something is missing for me in Ruhadze´s interpretation.
