Here in India, your neck line and skirt line matters. But your waist can show especially in saree and it would be considered decent. My sister and I are uncomfortable with that and usually cover up the the waist while wearing saree. An older aunty told my sister to pull the saree a bit lower so the waist is seen 😆.

It's the same in Japan! Very few people will comment if you have a short skirt, and everyone seems to comment if you have the teeeeensiest hint of cleavage. I like tops with necklines below my collarbones and they're so hard to find here

Generally yes, but not as a teacher at Japanese schools though. As a female teacher, you need to wear dresses/skirts/pants that are knee length or longer, and also not too tight. I did get a comment on a dress I wore that was deemed too short once. I later bought one of those inner skirts with lace at the end to elongate the length dress so that I can wear it while teaching at schools without getting policed.

😭 I’d struggle. Now that I’m thicc particularly in hips and thighs, I’m much more comfortable with a lot of shoulder and a bit of cleavage than a lot of thigh and booty. Gotta say your fit’s cute, though! And it’s inspiring to see a curvaceous black woman with braids working in S. Korean schools. 💜 Back when I was studying ~8-10yrs ago everyone was saying that a Black femme wouldn’t be hired unless they looked like supermodels. I remember thinking I could wear a wig and it was lucky I was skinny but I’d need to fix my teeth. Such a toxic mindset. Life has changed and I no longer have those aspirations but please continue sharing because there are still many out there who do!

I’ve been aware of the differences of what’s acceptable in Korea but it’s still so interesting to hear first hand accounts of it. It’s almost the complete opposite in the US. Short dresses and skirts are not usually work appropriate but you can show some cleavage. I’m top heavy so everything I wear shows cleavage. I don’t bother trying to pull up my shirt anymore really. I’ve had to do that my whole life then decided not to as an adult. Like whatever it’s my body lol😂

There's a lot of overlap between femmenity and showing too much. Even with makeup. My dad wouldn't let my sister wear makeup until she was 14. She was 9 when she first showed interest. I agreed that she was too young but my reason was different. I was concerned shed play too.much with contour and resculpt her face out of insecurity because for whatever that's in style and I know we have wider faces, wider nose, more cheekbone, and like no jawline and I didn't want her getting self conscious by over-criticizing what she was born with. My dad thought makeup is only for older women in their 20s and late teens. Men don't notice more subtle make up. Or rather not even subtle because lip gloss and eyeliner and mascara don't quite look natural. They look made up and classy.
