Great videos. Do you think these sort of bindings would work well for a thicker study Bible?

Hi, Yes, it works well however I need to clarify one important item. After the dimensions are sketched out on the paper, wrap the paper around the Bible and verify the dimensions. Then, glue in the inner lining and then test the dimensions again. At this point, the paper with the lining can be trimmed up so it will be a good fit when the outside leather is added.

Thank you so much! I've really been struggling to understand from other videos what holds the text block to the cover. Just gluing it to the first paper page seems too weak.

To protect the pages from being wetted by the glued leather, when pressing, insert some blotting paper inside the cover, and greaseproof paper. May stop the pages going into waves.

Wow. You may have just saved me major headaches for future rebinds. Never thought to use a hammer on the corners or use tacky glue instead of paying top dollar for PH balance glue. I would like to see some more corner work. For some reason corners seem to be the hardest thing to do.

I'm confused about a certain part. You have three pieces of leather for the bible cover: the top, the bottom, and then one for the spine. It looks like you also had another cover wrapping around all of those. Could you explain the reason for not just doing one full wrap instead of three pieces and then the extra wrap around all three?

Hi, The three pieces of leather on the paper become the inner cover. This is where the dimensions are verified and adjusted before the main piece of leather is wrapped around the cover. If the leather liner is one piece the hinge section sometimes isn't enough to attach to the Bible. I’m still not understanding why you add 3/8” to the fore edge I could understand adding a bit top and bottom because the leather spine ribs are bound to take up a bit of your height. Is it to accommodate the width of the lining flap on the inside, that forms the hinge, 3/16” for each side? Interesting method. My previous thoughts on this style of edge lined cover is to have the liner as one whole piece, and you cut out a ‘letterbox’ slot to take the spine, cut it out like a big capital I (i not L!) the length of the text block spine. Then you have a little bar top and bottom of liner leather to turn your cover in over. However, this method makes more economical use of leather. Usually, doesn’t a book have a hollow space between the text block’s spine and the cover of the spine? So there’s a fold of thin card or thick paper or a tube in there, each side stuck in place, but the hollow can open when you open your bible. This allows the spine to stay rounded when the book is open.

Hi Bella, I should clarify that after the 3/8's is added to the paper and the leather lining is glued, it should be matched up to the text block to verify the dimensions. I'm not sure if the 3/8's is needed because the extra leather on the hinge adds space, or that I curve the spine a little so it's not flat, or the factory binding is too tight at the spine. Regarding the spacing between the block and the spine, this is correct. There shouldn't be glue there. I haven't seen a paper tube used but I will keep an eye out for this. I did see thin paper added over the spine to keep the glue from getting on the cover. I did not add it in the video. I have added it in the past when the glue wasn't 100% dry and I wanted to keep working on the Bible.

Thank you Marcel for these instructions. I was able to complete a lot of these steps but had some issues with not enough area to work with at top and bottom of bible. When I cut back the spine I also ended up taking that 3/8" off the both the top and bottom. When you measured 3/8" for side measurements for inside cover did you give yourself the same additional space at top and bottom of bible?

Hi, the 3/8 is just for the side. After getting your dimensions on the paper, cut it out and wrap it around the Bible to verify that it’s a perfect fit. If it’s a good fit, the inside leather can be glued. The outside leather will have a 1/2 border based on the paper dimensions so there should always be an even amount of leather all the way around.
