The King over the Flood (Psalm 29:1-11)
A Psalm of pure praise. ‘Jehovah’ is mentioned 18 times in 11 verses. Its immediate inspiration was a great storm blowing inland from the Mediterranean, breaking on Mt. Hermon, then going south through the land from Lebanon in the north to Kadesh in the south, first the warning of thunder then devastation, with flashes of lightning and floods of rain, finally ending in peace. But the grandeur of the language and the angelic excitement speaks of something much greater and more significant. The key to its primary meaning is v10: “The Lord sat ENTHRONED at (over) THE FLOOD.” There are 10 Hebrew words translated ‘Flood’, but the word here is mabbul, used uniquely for Noah’s Flood (Genesis 6-9, x12). Psalm 29 is the only other place in Bible where this word is used, and the Flood account uses no other word for Flood. Therefore Psalm 29 describes the great Flood. As a storm came in, David is transported in the Spirit and sees what took place in heaven and earth at the time of the Flood. God on His throne controls events by His spoken word, and the angels respond with praise. It is like Revelation, which describes God’s judgments released from Heaven (accompanied by angelic praise) and their effects on earth during the world-wide judgment of the Tribulation - the Flood being a type of the Tribulation (Matthew 24:37-39).
*SCENE 1 in Heaven (v1-2) is a call to praise to the mighty host around God’s throne: “Give (ascribe, draw near) unto the Lord, O you mighty ones (‘bene elim’, lit: ‘sons of God (the Mighty)’ = angels). Give unto the Lord glory and strength” (v1). The angels are to acknowledge His glory and strength, manifested in His sovereign works of power at the Flood. In the Old Testament ‘sons of God’ always refers to angels, either elect or fallen. It means they were directly created by God (Psalm 89:6 (bene el), Genesis 6:1,4, Job 1:6,2:1, Job 38:7 (bene elohim), Psalm 82:6 (bene elyon), as Adam was (Luke 3:38), and as born again our spirits are (John 1:12, 2Corinthians 5:17). One reason God’s angels praised God for the Flood was that it was a great victory in the spiritual conflict between God and satan (Genesis 3:15). Genesis 6:1-4 gives the reason why the Flood as necessary. Certain fallen angels sinned by having sex with women, creating the Nephilim (giants), corrupting mankind morally and genetically. As a result, evil increased greatly, and if God did not act, the corruption of the human DNA would have made mankind unsavable, and prevented the Coming of the God-man Messiah. This occultic invasion and attack on the human race was a threat to God’s plan. God was longsuffering but finally He had to send the Flood and save the believers in the Ark. God locked up the offending angels in Tartarus, and in the Flood, He destroyed all the Nephilim (who became the demons), and so completely defeated the enemy. In v2 (1) PRAISE leads into (2) WORSHIP: “GIVE unto the Lord the GLORY due to His NAME (nature). (2) WORSHIP the Lord in the beauty (majesty) of HOLINESS.” HOLY describes who God is, GLORY is all that proceeds from Him (Isaiah 6:3).
*SCENE 2 (v3-9) describes the works of God on earth at the Flood, in judgment on evildoers and then renewing the earth, emphasising His sovereign power released through His WORD - the VOICE of the Lord (x7). He speaks and His will comes to pass, echoing Genesis 1-2 (2Peter 3:5-6). v3: “(1) The VOICE of the LORD is over the WATERS(God controlled the waters of the Flood). The God of Glory THUNDERS (in judgment); the Lord is over many WATERS (Genesis 7:11-12). v4: (2) The VOICE of the LORD is powerful (great amounts of energy were released as the fountains of the deep burst open and the floodgates in the skies released their torrents, devastating the whole world). (3) The VOICE of the LORD is full of majesty (honour - God’s reaffirmed sovereignty over His enemies. v5: (4) The VOICE of the LORD breaks the cedars. Yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon (the mighty pre-Flood trees were broken and uprooted by the rushing waters. All vegetation was washed away in great mats, the fields and hill were laid bare). v6: “He makes them also skip like a calf, Lebanon and Sirion (Mount Hermon - Deuteronomy 3:9) like a young wild ox.” The erupting fountains of the deep were followed by great earthquakes and landslides, so that even the great mountains shook and new mountains arose. Hermon is significant because Enoch says the initial angelic intrusion took place there, so this is where the judgment began creating the great rift valley. v7: (5) The VOICE of the LORD divides (stirs up, digs out, hews out) the flames of fire.” Fiery lavas, volcanos, burning vapours emerging from the depths. Much igneous rock was laid down during the Flood.....
