Huge shoutout to the people responsible for the audiovisual design of these classroom videos! Everything from the materials and lighting used in the set to the notecards on the screen to the color of clothing worn by each of the participants shows the same level of artistic care and attention to detail you see in all Bible Project’s animated videos. It just puts you in a relaxed and contemplative mood that makes the deep literary and theological content so much easier to process. Very well done!

I'm soo humbled by these courses. Thank you Tim, for putting these in a language that I can understand. Something that always astonished me was my parents education, they were both raised in Mexico by Catholic parents. But, neither of them went beyond elementary school education. When they came to the Lord, as adults the Lord does something amazing in their understanding of the Bible, with limited reading and writing abilities. It educated both of my parents, to the point that, by the time I was an adult child, 1 of 14 by the way. We could have a proper conversation about what the Lord would reveal to them by His word. My Dad's daily routine, would be to come from work and take a break from His day and sit on his couch to read and pray. My mom's routine was getting everyone ready for the day and then getting into her reading time as well. And everytime they would be transformed; mentally, spiritually, even physically (for my Healing ministry friends 🤗). It was as if they never aged.

The Bible as an Ancient Text: To approach the Bible as an ancient text, he suggests readers adopt a new sensitivity, striving to understand and respect the cultural and historical context in which it was written. Texts are Intentional: He emphasizes the importance of attentive and reflective reading, recognizing that each element of the Bible was carefully chosen and placed with purpose, urging readers to seek the intentional meaning behind each word and structure.

I read the Bible nightly and presently on my 3d. reading. Original Bible was written in Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, etc. and there are words in those languages that we do not share in English. I have always felt if I were fluent (and I am Jewish) in Hebrew I could better understand the Bible. Reading the entire Bible the first time I do not feel it is possible for anyone to understand. I am only beginning to get it on don't get bored with what I can't understand. And culturally over 2000 years ago so very different. I remember in college studying "history" professor told me we don't read and study like we do other disciplines and I got to thinking about that. Gods words tells stories and the use of parables, and it is ALL connected.

*The problem with that is the Hebrew scriptures and all other languages were supernaturally changed, including all of the ancient manuscripts and every reference book on Earth. The good news is that you can still find out what used to be written by researching (supernatural bible changes) before the enemy cuts the lights. Then Amos **8:12** will be fulfilled and you will not find God's word ANYWHERE! You've been warned...*

1 - it's written by and for a nation of people, who were chosen by the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 2 - If I or someone else considers themself a foreigner, adopting these laws and statutes will allow me or them to sojourn with that nation. Just as a foreigner would need to get naturalized in order to become American. As a child, I didn't know these two things so I had no idea what I was reading in Ruth and why it was even in the Bible.

Can you please do this 3days darkness. The prophecy foretells three days and nights of "an intense darkness" over the whole earth, against which the only light will come from blessed beeswax candles, and during which "all the enemies of the Church ... will perish." The prophecy parallels the Ten Plagues against Egypt in the Book of Exodus (Ex. 10:21-29).

Wait, Tim! Are you trying to offend half your audience with that Marvel Universe joke? 😅 Clearly, you haven’t seen some of the best they have to offer (Winter Soldier, Guardians 1, Ragnarok, Infinity War and End Game- just to make a few. Now if you are talking about the last two years, you may have a point. I love the example given about the cultural tropes of Bollywood movies. I have learned so much about the Old Testament simply from deepening my friendships with my Hindu friends. Many of their cultural practices in the Bible are still being practiced today in India. It is fascinating. Those friendships have helped me understand our Eastern Holy Book a little better.

Thank you for this. Question please: to receive the message and meaning of the text how much do we consider the influence of the authors’ encyclopaedia/culture/character vs the sovereignty of God in the production of the text? I’m at a loss on how I can explain this question better but I will try. It’s just that in reading and understanding the Bible esp the OT, how much do I take meaning from looking at the ancient worldly context (including the specific personal identity of the writer) as opposed to foremost acknowledging the spiritual authority God had in the creation of it, for example when finding God’s character in it or His actual instruction (to understand slavery, His bringing of judgment, His wrath, his prescriptions of punishment, or seeming conditions for blessings vs what we are taught of His character that is rooted in grace and love)?

Yeah.... To summarize The Old Testament.... 1: Man Fell 2: God chooses broken sinful people to carry out his will, and they still mess up. 3: God's chosen people keep backsliding due to sin, and God punishes them repeatedly, then forgives them, then the cycle continues; Sin, punishment, repentance, forgiveness. Repeat. 4: A promised messiah will come.... for EVERYONE.

Sounds a lot like the Catholic understanding the literal sense---that which is inspired in the Bible is the author's intention in writing the text, and any spiritual senses build off of that literal sense. For much of the Bible, this is an historical rendering, but for certain passages this is not certain, and even in the historical passages we should expect that events are compressed or rearranged in a non-chronological ordering.

I believe... (Sorry Brethren, for the VERY long "comment". But I believe it NEEDS to be espoused) The Old Testament, from what I have read (All of it), and heard it narratived KJV (ALL of it)...and another narrative in the NIV; that I believe, it can be understood. IF one gets on their knees; and sincerely prays to Jesus ONLY; for Him to help them to undersand the OT. And Better: Pray sincerely, to Jesus for "Wisdom, Understanding and the Truth". Because Jesus is the ONLY "inerrant and infallibe" Being, there wil ever be. Praise Jesus. And IF one does not have Jesus' Holy Spirit guiding them; satan will laugh them to the end of the world. Oh yes, but very sad. Because satan has promulated over 45,000 different Denominations; all over the world. And most of them say, 'We are Right and the others are Wrong! Because. WE get OURS from the bible!". How foolish and silly is that! May Jesus have mercy. And IF any Born Again Christian (that is a MUST first) wants to know the truths about anything; they MUST pray to Jesus (as above). Or they will just make another satan's Denomination. Sad, Sad and SAD! May Jesus have mercy. So, back to understanding the OT...and you are Born Again Christian (NOT just a Christian); and you have prayed to Jesus ONLY; for those 3 must requirements; you will find things you have never seen or heard. Sad, but true. And good for them. Believe me. For it took 75 yrs of my 91 Yrs to realize; that IF I want true Understanding; I must go to Jesus... So, the OT is broken into two major 2,000 "periods". The first 2,000 yrs was taken up with God's Creation, the Adam and Eve sins, and causing an incredible population in the world. And 1,600 yrs in...God had to kill EVERY living creature (they are called Antediluvians) in the world; EXCEPT for 8 adult people...Noah, his wife; and His 3 sons and their wives. And for the nect 400 yrs; God let the earth repopulate, like it was. That takes us to the second 2,000 yrs. (Remember their was NO commandments during the first 2,000 yrs.) But beginning that 2,000 yrs; God created some unbelievable MAJOR "ways"; for man to live by loving others, etc! Like the Righteous Abraham. And God gave incredible, awesome blessings and 10 Commandments, with Moses. Unbelivable! And God told Abraham: that He would bless them until the end of the world. And they would populate like the "Sands in the Sea". And the "Stars in the Sky"! And so; that they wouldn't have another: satan-led, Godless Chicaneries, like Adam and Eve...and the Antediluvians...He gave Moses another 603 Commandments. That covered every "iota" of Life. Oh indeed. Praise God. And Abraham's descendants were to be "Ambassodors" to the world. And God created 12 Tribles. That would cover the whole world; witnessing them to become the Abraham ways. And those tribes would be Forever. Praise God. But, sad indeed...that NEVER came to fruition; to this day. But God tried; every thing He could do; to get them to be Righteous. But, sadly satan won. And by the last days of that 2,000 yrs; God's patiences...had ended. And that takes us to the NT (and another 2,000 yrs). Where Jesus; IS the "Laws" through Faith IN Jesus. But that is for another time; and another satan-led, Godless Chicaneries, all over again. Sad but OH so True. End of Story, and I rest me case... In any case Brethren, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN!

Amen, amen and AMEN! For without wisdom, understanding and the truths from Jesus only; there is nothing but satan and his Chicanery of LIES and Hell... So the secret...is to become closer and closer to Jesus; who is the only True God Almighty, there ever be. Sadly, I did not realize that; until I reached the age 75 yrs of my 91 yrs, of Christianity. But thank Jesus that I finally took it all to Him. Praise His Holy name. Thanks Almond, for your great reply. I love those 4 verses you wrote. And may Jesus bless you and yours always.

There are opposite dangers. One is thinking that it is necessary to be an expert to understand the Old Testament. I believe that a sincere but naive reader will learn from reading the text and be drawn closer to God. We have more than the text! We have the Spirit. The opposite danger is to think that paying attention to the literary features adds nothing to our understanding nor our connection to God. I learned something helpful and true about cells when I studied them in science class in 1965 in my youth. But it would be silly for me to insist that I have no more to learn.

The Narrow Gate 13 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell[f] is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. The Tree and Its Fruit 15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions. True Disciples 21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

It's cohesive if you obsessively read it in a short amount of time, check chronology charts, take notes, read study guides about specific books..... study like any other passion.

How did King Saul die? Which of the 4 verses is the real one? 1SA 31:4-6 Saul killed himself by falling on his sword. 2SA 1:2-10 Saul, at his own request, was slain by an Amalekite. 2SA 21:12 Saul was killed by the Philistines on Gilboa. 1CH 10:13-14 Saul was slain by God. Remember God is not the author of confusion. 1 Corin 14:33 1 Peter 3:15 says always give an answer. 1 Thess 5:21 says prove all things. What do you say about OT wickedness in the name of Yehova ywhw and evil he did and also told men to do ... is this our Father because Yeshau Jesus never called him Yehova etc but Adonai Father and Jesus rebuked a lot of sayings from Yehova I.e. you have heard it said an eye for an eye .. etc.... I'm not dispensationist I'm humbly asking for clarity as I have followed you from beginning with utmost regard... also an angel Matt 2 19-22 he misleads Joseph but Matt 2 22-24 the father leads him to Nazareth... so we can clearly see satan at work in both ... because our Father and Jesus are love and evil things cannot come from a loving God

What of the New Testament? And for the Old, sure, there’s a lot of nasty stuff that happens in it, but Jesus Christ later admits a lot of the ancient law was due to the hardness of the hearts of the people God promised to make a covenant with. The point Jesus Christ is referring to specifically at the time is having two wives. This, He condemns. My point is that there’s more to the Old Testament than meets the eye.

The biblical authors wrote with the expectation that their readers (and hearers) were very familiar with the language being used and the religious, social, cultural, geo-political and historical context of the day (ancient to us but current to them) in which the literature was being written. So, the more familiar one is with the original language(s) of the bible and the biblical, historical setting and context (religious views, social and cultural practices and ideas, geo-politics of the day, etc.), the better that person will understand what the biblical authors were trying to communicate. The less one knows about those things, the more difficult the bible becomes to readily and clearly understand due to a lack of linguistic and contextual understanding. That is my take away for what it's worth.
