Featuring amateur archaeologist, enthusiast and multi-award winning investigative filmmaker, Simcha Jacobovici, The Naked Archaeologist is an irreverent, entertaining and eye-opening journey into the fascinating archaeology of the ancient world. Along the way, new discoveries are made, lost treasures revealed, and ancient mysteries uncovered.
One of the most brutal and brilliant leaders of ancient times, the first century King left a disconcerting legacy. And, he died the most gruesome and mysterious death. He was famous for impressive public works and architecture; and, for the Biblical slaughter of the firstborn sons of Israel and extraordinary cruelty including murdering his own family.

This was the quote in Matthew that was a fulfillment of the prophecy in Jeremiah: "Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” [Matthew 2:16-18]

YossefD'Perez Diaz You’re right. These people aren’t Christians. I see this all the time on secular publications. Scripture says Herod was struck by an angel and was eaten by worms because he didn’t give God the glory when the people said he had the voice of a God. But I still think it was also God’s payback for his evil deeds. Acts 12:22-23 (NKJV) 22 And the people kept shouting, "The voice of a god and not of a man!" 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died. One website says it was it was about 14,000 infants killed by Herod. I didn’t realize it was that many. No wonder why the Matthew 2:18 is such a prophetic verse. Matthew 2:16-18 (NKJV) 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more."

I don't think anyone is really trying to justify his behavior so much as to wonder if illness didn't contribute to the monstrous actions. Did he like Caligula suffer from some delusion that he was a God and would thus never die? It's widely accepted that Caligula survived a high fever that obviously fried a few gray cells as his declaration that he was a living God came after this episode, but we cannot ignore that he was raised by his predecessor Tiberius who by all accounts had more than a few screws loose himself. Herod was a friend of the Roman Royal family and spent some time in Rome as a child, who knows how much he witnessed there that may have had a subconscious effect on him. Nearly every Royal family in History has this inherent psycho behavior plaguing it, be it inbreeding or any other factors, inherent tyranny was a sad normal for them until they were either overthrown, or forced to accept a reduced role in thier kingdoms.

Herod considered himself a Jew but was never accepted by Jewish leaders. He fell in love with a Jewish Princess whose marriage to him would join their tribe with his Kingdom, granted to him by Marc Anthony. Herod is said to be the only man to have resisted Cleeopatra. He had his first wife and son exciled and in later years murdered. He killed his other two sons for fear of them taking over his kingdom. When Marc Anthony was busy with debauchery and Cleopatra he was being attacked by invaders. Instead of having Herod help defend him against Rome, he sent himelsewhere and knowing Augustus Cesar would take over the empire immediately pledged his allegiance and was given rule over Marc Anthony and Cleopatra's lands but he was a ruler in name only, the true power lay with Ceasar. He was never accepted by Rome, nor the Jews so to preserve his name and inheritance and to find favor with the Jews he built these grand structures. It was Josephus and Herod's maji that interpreted his dreams and informed him of CHRIST's birth, he slew the infants because they were a threat to his crown. As did Cleopatra to her siblings and so on and so forth. But I am certain you know this.

What causes acts of brutality that can lead to murder is normally a lack of mental control for whatever reason usually pain which can drive a person mad. In the case of someone in power it's all the more dangerous because having absolute power corrupts. Now imagine such power in an immoral mind the life of another means nothing to such a monster. History has shown these typs of leader's come and go as time marches on.

The new testament gospels are internally inconsistent in many locations. If you think otherwise you have never read them in any detail. They are based on hearsay and need very careful analysis as a result.

@@allangibson8494 I have studied these matters for decades. One useful exercise is that of a study of the harmonization of the gospels. That shows how things fit together. And here is another matter: by both definition and by revelation, God is greater than man in His understanding and ways. The prophet Isaiah, in chapter 55, verses 8-9, wrote about such matters. The upshot of this is, man is never going to understand everything. But,if we are humble and honest, we can learn. It is written in Proverbs 1, that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Alan, I will pray that this verse in Proverbs will characterize your spiritual and intellectual life/growth.

It also must be considered that in the repair/ rebuilding of Solomon’s temple, he also built the equivalent of a temple shopping mall where one had to purchase all things that would be taken as offerings with the Temple priests getting a cut of all the purchases as well as Herod. This was seen as a corruption of what the temple and the faith was supposed to be and why with Annis and Chiapas having been appointed as high priest, various groups would have broken with the temple adding to the unrest of the. Roman occupation especially as Tiberius had become emperor. The splinter groups like the Essenes, the Samaritan’s, and the rebellious groups like 5he zealots Etc. Would have caused a huge amount of turbulence and tension creating an atmosphere for many to pray for the messiah.

Paula Wallace To me there can be many questions, I had the good fortune to meet Menachem Shneerson, the Grand Rebbe of the Lubavitcher Hasidim of NY. Shortly after our meeting posters were being raised all over the country by the Lubovich that Moisach was coming. This from a man that had endured the horrors of the concentration camp. And one who would recognize a fellow traveler even though of not of the faith. All three aspects of the principles can, do and have coincided first in the monotheistic belief in the Father then through the belief in the Son and finally in recognition of the Will. It is when the individual efforts of our collective Will coincide that the “ Miracles’ occur. It has always been the principle that peace should reign and that it happens when the Will overcomes all disputes, not to cause them.

Paula Wallace, yes that was what was said to the Hyksos Pharaoh. Even if you hav seen simcha’s work on the Exodus, it must be remembered that the entire story makes sense when you remember that Israel was in Egypt for over 400 years. Given the recorded history and archeological record of Egypt. When Joseph had given the dream interpretation to Pharaoh, it was to Pepy. That began 5he seven years of plenty, then Pepy died and Joseph made sure that the local governors gave out the stored grain for the seven years of Drought. According to the Egyptian chronology of sediment cores, this was around 2000 BCE and the Hebrews were able reside in Goshen ( the delta of lower Egypt) during this time, PEpy’s sons were ineffectual Pharaohs and the first interregnum began wherein the internal power struggles among the governors caused a split between Upper and Lower Egypt. But The Hebrews still served the Pharaoh of Upper Egyptian Dynasties. Until the Hyksos came Circa 1750 BCEand became the Apaharoah that did not know if Joseph, Circa 1620-10 BCE, Moses was born. It is not known where the exact borders between the area controlled by the Hyksosand the DynStid Egyptians. This could have been just on the other side of the branch of the Nile when Moses was placed into a basket. Meaning that he could have gone from one side of the River to the other. To be found by The Dynastic Pharaoh’s daughter and brought up in his household. And to be brother to Achmose who after the Exodus and the destruction of the Hyksos Pharaoh’ army, was able to force the Hyksos out and reunify Egypt.Achnose chased the Hyksos all the way to the Hittite border. Although how long that took is not known. The Dynastic Pharaohs would still have remembered the good done by Joseph and All the Hebrews( Sumerian tablets have Jacob brokering grain deals between Egypt and Sumeria Circa 1990-80 BCE) so during the Forty years in 5he desert( of course according to his wife, they would have gotten to the promised land quicker if Moses had asked directions) that the emissaries of Achmose might have found them and provided the Mana that is still celebrated along with the weapons that Joshua would latter use as both he and Achmose would driove the Hyksos up north. Seen from this light, there is a self consistent story( except for the joke) that encompasses Exodus and the evidence from both Egypt, Sumeria and what we historically understand from the eruption of Santorini.

It is recorded he killed all first Born.. what was he afraid of ? To actually do that must have been something that frightened Herod .. ! Listen, no matter how anyone slices or Dices it, he feared the Coming of CHRIST. Just as those do today. If some could hide the history, or twist it they would. Fact is, Everybody knows it now. To go against biblical writings, particularly peophets , Isaiah, and others, would be willful ignorance . The Messiah came, and is Coming again. Wake up Man !

Herod was a monster and I think we all could agree with that. But also we have to think that Herod had to be the monster he was in order for Jesus to endure what he did for the sins for all of us. If it wasn't Herod it would of been somebody else because the story was set in stone from the beginning. Jesus knew of what was to be before it was to be. Does that excuse Herod? No not in any way shape or form. The man from what I've heard was a lot like Hitler in that he was a monster that he murdered many many innocent people.

Food For Thought . Herod NEVER Built 1 Thing . He may have Told Certain People How to Build these Things . But Herod Himself Never Lifted a Figure To Build Anything . He Had Slaves to Build these things . Keep in mind If People Could Not pay their Taxes . Herod Not only Took Their Land Herod Took Their Children And Possibly Them Also as His Slaves
