Biblical Womanhood In a Godless Culture | Rosaria Butterfield

Modern culture is increasingly outspoken against a biblical understanding of what it means to be a woman. Even some Christians, swayed by the LGBTQ+ movement, have rejected God’s word on issues of sexuality and gender in favor of popular opinion. In light of these pressures, it’s more important than ever to help women see the truth about who God created them to be.
Join us for a conversation with Rosaria Butterfield, former professor of English and Women’s Studies at Syracuse University, and author of Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age. In this episode, learn how Christians can protect themselves from anti-Christian influences by holding fast to God's Word.

Nope you are completely normal. I am a 74 year old woman, born that way, lol and I love and serve the Lord. When I gave birth to my two children it was perfectly normal to use the term 'gender' to refer to their biological sex. Today it has become twisted and changed but for me, it will always mean a child's biological sex.

Rosaria is absolutely right about the testimony giving conversation. I gave my testimony to my entire congregation two weeks after I dedicated my life to Christ after being asked to share it. It was well received by my congregation but this is why Rosaria is so discerning… it was an open highway to the enemy into my life and guess what… NO ONE offered to disciple me outside of giving me pamphlets to parachurch ministries. By Gods grace alone am I even still standing… but man… heed that warning… and if you have discernment now to get into a discipleship relationship… RUN TO ONE!!

@@jesusrocks256 I think there's a distinction between merely "sharing your testimony" and putting a brand new Christian in a position as a leader, whether that's officially or unofficially in a church, having them at conferences, or even online. It's a very fine line. That's why strong accountability from your church leaders is so important. I love that she talked about that. We see this all the time, especially in celebrity culture. Some famous person makes some sort of profession of faith, no matter how vague and/or confused, and immediately they are all over media giving interviews, making videos and influencing so many people. (Hence the term, "influencers.") I think most of the time it's well intentioned. But these poor people need time to settle into their beliefs, time to heal from their past, etc. They're tossed out there, oftentimes to be challenged by the most aggressive people the world has to offer. Then we wonder why they crash and burn. It's tragic. New Christians are called "baby Christians" for a reason. They know very little and they are vulnerable. They need protection and time to mature, not to be immediately on the front lines.
@Yesica1993
@Yesica1993 26 күн бұрын
My heart goes out to you, that you were put in that position. It's usually well intentioned on the part of churches. But, yes, new Christians need time. They need to be taken under the wings of more mature Christians and taught the basics of the Christian life.

How amazing that her Reformed Presbyterian church elders and pastors loved her enough to confront her on the false beliefs of "same-sex" attraction and affirmation as being "ok." Most modern "churches" are so worldly they would not bring such deceptions to The Light and repent accordingly.

It was her use of pronouns thst they corrected her about. She'd been using preferred pronouns as a way of building bridges and being respectful. She already had repented if her views on same sex attraction.

Yes, I belong to a Reformed church, and our elders would do the same. I loved her entire speech, her book recommendations, her comments on the Regulative Principle of worship, the creeds & confessions, and steering clear of modern praise music. This lady is fearless, and spot on in the post-modern world we live in. As some one commented, she is a modern day female version of the Apostle Paul! 🔥

I listen to way too many podcasts. But this was SO good! I love that she always brings things back to repentance and killing your sin. This is the transformative power of the gospel that is so rarely taught! That point is why there are so many people who sit in Bible teaching churches for years, and yet their lives are not changed. One point that I wish had been explained was the "regulative principle of worship." Going forward, please always define terms. Not all of us may know them. I believe it has to do with the fact that Scripture regulates how we are to worship? But no one ever goes into detail about what that exactly entails. I've always been lost on this. Anyway, thank you again. Rosaria Butterfield and I are only a few years apart, but I still want to be her when I grow up. This is how I long to live my life. I want to love and serve Christ completely. And I fall so far short that, most days, it leaves me in despair.

I appreciated so much that she said how hard it was to always be giving her testimony. I've always wondered about that with people. It has to get to you, having to revisit dark, painful times in your past and having to do it over and over and over. I respect her for being honest about the toll it took on her. I greatly appreciate her ministry, but I understand when people need to take a step back. It has to be exhausting emotionally. And, as she said, the spiritual battle has to be intense. We don't talk about that enough! We put people like her on a pedestal, as though they no longer struggle. We will always struggle in this life. Only Christ is our anchor and strength.

Great convo, and very helpful. Been walking this for 12 years with our oldest who says he is homosexual and is living it out fully. We were clear at the outset that we did not agree with what he was choosing based on what Scripture says, but I believe he has come to think that we’re ok with it now. The Lord is graciously bringing some conviction around a couple of issues, and I believe repentance will be in order, to them as well as some family members. The solid Biblical position you both have, and our church has, is very encouraging and strengthening. Thanks to both of you for your work. How do I find the debate with Rebecca McLaughlin?

It used to be that people would point to Billy Graham or J. I. Packer as the “leading light” of Evangelicalism. In this topsy-turvy world where it seems like virtually everybody has become as least slightly compromised, I believe I’d nominate this woman to fill their shoes. An odd choice, I’m sure. But she is wise, faithful, and uncompromising. Like St. Paul, like Chuck Colson, sometimes the “worst of sinners” becomes the “best of saints.” “Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven-for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little."

I now have to go to the dictionary to learn the meaning of this new word I have never heard before & don't even know how to spell. In fact, there was a lot of words used that I am not sure of the actual meanings of & that is on top of the many words that today are suddenly changing their meanings... Well that was interesting, I think I now understand the basic meaning of teleology after having read a list of different dictionaries & uses of the word in a sentence or scenario. However, I don't think I will be using it for a while but remembering that telos, means end, purpose or goal & that logos means word, though the dictionary says it means explanation or reason, I might get the idea of how to use it in my thinking.

As I understand it, the old English “man” originally referred to a generic person, whether male or female. The specific word for men as male was “wer.” The word man came to be used both for male and man as generic human. The word “woman” never refers to anything but female historically. I also think we should retain the word man as a collective.

I think Rosaria has a lot of wisdom to share and I appreciate the ways she serves the church. That said it’s a tragic irony that her own conversion involved good faith conversations in private settings, and yet she publicly labels other Christians as ‘heretics’ because they don’t accept her doctrine that temptation is equivalent to sin.
@masonhale2569
@masonhale2569 Ай бұрын
It seems that she loves to label things as "sin" and "heresy" with no acknowledgement of the fact that it is possible for Christians to come to different conclusions (or none at all) on certain issues because the fact is interpreting the word of God can be complicated and humans are prone to error. To label anyone that disagrees with you as either stupid or heretical is the sin of pride. It is especially ironic for someone that has changed her own mind on these issues - does she think her earlier books were heretical? What makes her so sure that she won't change her mind again? And so what if she does? Can the Lord not mold and shape our understanding of Him and His word over time?

She transitioned from one extreme ideology (Marxism, feminism, liberation theology, etc.) to another extreme ideology (conservatism) while maintaining a consistent theoretical agenda. This shift, from affirming her former views to condemning them while embracing conservatism, raises the question of whether such transitions characterize modern Christianity. Is this indicative of a broader trend where individuals move from intellectualizing various ideals and ideologies, often using terms like "anti," within the context of their beliefs? The weariness I feel towards discussions in the evangelical space revolves around the constant labeling of things as "biblical" or "unbiblical." These conversations seem to reinforce existing biases, perpetuating divisions instead of addressing them. Instead of focusing on teaching the gospel, it appears that many are using theoretical and theological frameworks to persuade others to adopt their perspectives. In reality, there is freedom in discussing interpretive texts like the Scriptures, and the tendency to label something as "biblical" or "unbiblical" often serves as an appeal to authority. This approach may only induce shame for holding differing views, hindering true dialogue that allows for diverse interpretations without rigid categorizations.

But many others would also use that word to describe their divergent views. Dont fall for moral relativism. It's a self-contradiction because it holds an inherent absolutist thought within itself ("we MUST be relative").

I acknowledge that there may be inherent value in what she is doing for her faith community. I also think her testimony is very real, unique, and powerful. However, I find it pertinent to question the difference between her approach and that of an atheist who commits with similar convictions, shaping their entire identity around debunking God and faith communities. It raises the broader question of whether opposing an ideology should define one's entire identity, regardless of the specific stance taken. Both individuals, she and the atheist, seem to invest a considerable part of their identities in opposition to certain beliefs. This prompts me to reflect on the nature of conviction-driven identities and whether there is a fine line between advocacy for one's beliefs and defining oneself in opposition to others. It is far easier for a single set of truth values to be continuously affirmed as true when someone on a pulpit asserts them. In the context of her transition from an academic background in feminist and queer theory to ultra-conservatism, it becomes evident that her current convictions are now presented as absolute truths. The ease with which one ideology is replaced by another, seemingly validated by a theologically intellectual figure, raises questions about the fluid nature of truth and the role of authority in shaping our belief systems. It highlights the potential challenge of critically evaluating and reevaluating our convictions in the face of persuasive rhetoric from influential figures.

@@gummylens5465 How can you simultaneously assert that you are a finite being called to humility and at the same time think that you have a perfect understanding of the word of God? It's not moral relativism to recognize that there IS absolute truth, but due to our fallen nature we are incapable of fully grasping it. It is okay to accept that on some issues you might be wrong, that brothers and sisters in Christ may come to different conclusions on certain issues and that's okay because we are all redeemed by the grace of God.

Regardless of what one may think about many of Rosaria's ideas, she is an intelligent and articulate woman. But no one can have deep knowledge or right interpretation of everything. When asked where the idea of homosexual orientation comes from, she claims it's a purely modern invention, attributable to Freud. This certainly overlooks, at a minimum, a rather important Western text called Plato's Symposium in which the character Aristophanes develops a myth concerning the origin of people with a definite homosexual nature, both male and female. For at least 2500 years and probably much longer, people have been very aware that some individuals are exclusively or primarily attracted to others of their sex. The fact that the Bible doesn't discuss it in these terms does not mean it didn't exist. The Bible, one might want to argue, is not even talking about people who are homosexual by nature, but rather by choice. But the pedantic and ideological desire to claim that gay people have nothing gay about their natures or identities is just as silly as arguing, "No, dear, you ARE not a Christian (doctor, runner, American, wife, dog-owner, etc.) you just (sometimes) HAVE Christian feelings and (sometimes) DO Christian things." By the way, a minor point: her grammatical description (at 51:55) was off too: "to be" is not a "conjugal" verb, it's a copulative verb (similar idea, but since she is so insistent about the correct use of terms...); and what's in the predicate position with such a verb is not a "direct object." The whole point is that the subject and the predicate are being linked; the former isn't acting on the latter. This matters mainly because it helps to show that her great and unyielding confidence in all she says is too elevated.

I respect a lot of what Rosaria has to say but she does seem to suffer from know-it-all-ism, regularly mentioning that she’s a writer, a scholar, a professor. She brought those up multiple times in this video. We all know that by now. I’d love to hear a talk where she doesn’t mention these things but I don’t think she can go without mentioning them because she identifies with the *pride* of being those things. It’s a bit like what she said about how giving your testimony over and over, relaying its dark particulars and former sins, can make you identify with it in an unhealthy way. Of course, there’s nothing sinful about being the things she says she is but mentioning them so much does seem like a point of pride which …. is an issue. Mention it once and be done with it. If she were no longer any of those things, would her identity in Christ be enough? Just a thought.

I agree with you. In my opinion, she comes across harsh at times and perhaps a bit arrogant. Her words could be seasoned with grace (now and again). I wish that highly educated wasn't so often coupled with a lack of humility, to some degree.

I like her confidence/faith. If someone feels threatened in any way, then its time to question themselves. I not threatened by her at all even if I might disagree on some minor points. BTW, she repeats her background because she is also working to undo the damage she did and she is well versed in the intellectual deceptions and lies of our age.

But maybe consider that some people got tattoos before they came to Christ. I have seen some ex gothic people talk about how when they came to Christ they had tattoos & piercings that when they presented in churches people shunned them. I have often thought about the fact that Joseph in Egypt looked like a total Egyptian especially when he became second to Pharaoh and got married to an Egyptian woman. There are times when your exterior look is something that you cannot change but your spirit and soul is hidden in Christ. Just like there are many Christ followers in Islamic nations that to you and look & behave like Muslims but for the sake of not losing their lives they are secret Christians. On the other hand we have pastors, teachers and believers looking holy and are living in secret. I had a season like that where I appeared holy , dressing modestly but was living in secret sin. Holy Spirit called me out and I repented & turned away from that. My point is that yes there is a need for modest & a way for us to present as Holy but sometimes the circumstances & past actions (tattoos , piercings even now trans surgeries )mean that those actions cannot be undone. But These people now call Jesus their Lord & Savior. I am saying all this in Love, not lecturing you in any way. Be blessed

It’s probably prevalent because people were sinning before Christ and the marks of that are still in their bodies. People have tattoos!!!! Get over it… or don’t. Lots of people also have kids outta wedlock before they get saved. Does seeing that trigger you as well???? You should be looking at character, not being a judgemental hypocrite who majors on people’s past failures in their flesh. Unreal☹️

Well, technically Rosario believes a woman is someone who God declares is a women by his divine intervention and no free will. Rosario is a reformed Calvinist. Period. She only believes Gay people that God ORDAINS, will be granted redemption when he chooses. She is the Hard Determinist of Christianity

I wonder what convinced Rosaria that Jesus created our universe. If Yahweh/Jesus didn't create our universe, then sin isn't real. So you would think that Rosaria being able to explain why she believes is very important. Just don't assume Yahweh/Jesus created our universe.
