You can try unsrtnat bibstyle and use option ''authoryear'' in natbib. For citations, use \citet and \citep commands.

Whatever I do the citation number won't appear. Sometimes it works, most times I just get a question mark. I have my 'ref.bib' file saved separately. It has references directly from google scholar and the file is saved. It is in the same folder as my 'main.tex' file. In my main file I have \bibliographystyle{plain} and \bibliography{ref} at the end (but before \end{document}. I do not get any error messages. I followed your steps of how to compile but I still get the ? where the ref number should be. Any ideas? My thanks in advance.

Yes, of course, and thank you for the reply. Actually there was nothing wrong with the code. For some reason when I 'un-ticked' (unchecked) the build up option in the configuration the problem disappeared. So everything is working as it should but I am still interested to know why creating a build up folder would cause problems with references. It seems other people have had the same problem. My good wishes to you and enormous thanks for the wonderful videos.

7x34hj Latex with Bibtex creates .bbl file which contains references in the set format. This file should be in the same working folder. In the case of build up setting, the bbl file is automatically generated in a separate folder and that is the reason bibligraphy doesn't work properly.

Check your particular citekey which may not be either properly defined in the bib file or it might have misspelled in the text.
