Thanks for this! Trying to settle on a history curriculum!

Good for you for sticking with it for 3 weeks! At least you can say you tried it. I think it's SO important for them to WANT to learn. I agree whole heartedly that if they dread school or learning they aren't really going to learn!

Exactly! It stinks that we're out the money for the curriculum but the blessing is we have choices

We love BJU press World History. There are 2 books and the back of the student books have the student work pages built in. We dont follow the reading plan suggestion but use it as a spine, so we read however much the suggested material we can in the time span we have (you can break it up and take your time if they are super interested or breeze through if they arent really ready for that section). Then we go to the library and look up age appropriate books for important people and major battles, we do our own map work and write essays on topics that we enjoy and want to delve deeper into. My kiddos are 13 and 8 and they both love to do it this way. Also as a mom I am learning so much and can look into more things that I feel led to read about on my own this way too.

What a great way to go through it!

The recommended daily reading is not 21 pages! I just don’t want people turned away from that misinformation. We are doing the recommended daily reading (maybe 4 pages) and it hits our 6 year old just right. There are pictures to look at in the spine and talk about. It’s cool that you wanted to use it differently, but you didn’t use it the way it was designed and then called it a “con.”
@HomegrownHomeschool Жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstood what I said. I didn’t say 21 pages was for daily reading but for their three day a week recommended plan. At the time we were doing a block schedule where we only did history two times a week so 21 pages to me for those two days, and honestly even three, is too much for a kindergartener with its textbook like style. I called it a con since it states it’s geared to younger elementary students and it’s quite a lot of pages. Sometimes this works for families and sometimes it doesn’t. I only shared why it didn’t work for us.

@@HomegrownHomeschool I don’t think I misunderstood. Week one is 15 pages (includes a prologue so more than most weeks). Week two is 10 pages, week three is 11 pages, week four is 11 pages... I get that it didn’t work for you, esp only doing 2 days a week. No biggie. Just wanted to give actual info for those interested in the curriculum.

Mystery of History which is BibiloPlan's optional spine works out for my 2nd grader better. Family Guide is recommneded so that even if you are not using RTD at the moment, you can use other suggestions for the lesson.

I feel Remember the Days is a lot too for younger grades. We use Biblioplan for all ages. For the younger elementary, we use Story of the World & its activity pages following the family guide of Biblioplan. I will also read MOH. I do have to Remember the Days so will use it sometimes if I feel the information is short and sweet to add. My older upper elementary 6-th & 7th grade will use Remember the Days and the high school the Companion. In the younger grades, we do more oral discussions with the Cool histories and older students the Cool histories answering on their own as a written worksheet. The secret to Biblioplan is using it as a tool.A buffet that works for your families. I am not a fan of Remember the days for the same reason as you too much reading for the younger grades.

We love Sonlight/Bookshark. But also, we like to listen to The Story of the World audio in the car. I basically line that up with what we are going in Sonlight.

I've heard a lot of people love story of the world but I haven't looked into it. I need to!

Ah! That's a great plan! I was super drawn to story of the world as well to supplement with sonlight (because I'm a super history nerd, haha) We loooooove sonlight and story of the world is a good add- on =)

For those who are using Remember The Days and it is working for your children but you're finding it hard to do all the reading.... Biblioplan does have the audio books CD's , or maybe it's a download, for these now, but yeah, check it out

That's awesome! Is that new? I hadn't heard of that when we were using this. That sounds like a great resource.
@crazychicken40632 жыл бұрын
@@HomegrownHomeschool It is fairly new. I don't remember when they put the first one out. It's been a few years ago. I was just checking on their web site and they have all 4 years finished. It is an audio MP3 as a download. If you go to the tab 'Shop' and choose what year you want, and choose the option a la Carte, under Remember The Days you will find 3 options to purchase. The hardcopy book, Ebook, and the Audio MP3.

This is ridiculous, to be honest. You can definitely just read one page a day and have history two times a week or even one. It is all in your own hands. That’s the beauty of homeschooling

Was that 21 pages for just one day or is that the whole week's reading from that book?
@HomegrownHomeschool2 жыл бұрын
If me work serves correct I believe it was the whole week but the way our schedule was last year we only had two days for history so it was personally a lot for us with the ages of my children (5 and 8 at the time).
