Bicycle Touring Iceland ( part 2 ) Riding the Ring road

Am a local. The traffic level between Selfoss and Reykjavík is very high by icelandic standards and really should be avoided. Also thee are alternate outes to choose from which both offer lower levels of traffic and a more interesting route. One is to trn north from Selfoss towards Þingveellir and then on to Reykjavík or turn southwest from Selfoss along the south coast and go through Þorlákshöfn and Krýsuvík which would make your entrry into Reykjavík from the south. Both add some kilometers to the journey but are nicer to ride and a more scenic options.

I completely agree with you. Our plan was also to cycle south-west from Selfoss, but when we heard the news about the upcoming volcanic eruption we decided not to do this and to continue following the Ringroad. We later did the route over Þingveelir with a rental car.

I got a question, did the airline charge you for bringing the bicycle?. If the did, how much was it ?. Btw, great video.

The airline charged me 50 euros for my bike. I had to transport it in a carton box.

@@travitude_nl I see. Which airline was it ?. I thought it was free as long as it is within the weight unless of course it exceeds the weight limit given on your flight ticket. I will be flying to Iceland and I want to bring my bicycle with me as well. I got 23 kg baggage allowance. My bike weighs roughly 15 KG.

We are thinking of doing this with the family. How did you store youe bike box when you got there?

We didn't. We came by ferry and cycled to Reykjavik. We got them from a local bikeshop in Reykjavik for free. If you want to store your boxes, you can store them for free at the Reykjavik City Camping.
