Bicycling Bloomington Indiana And I Was Threatened To Be Killed!

Cold bicycling adventure on Bloomington Indiana rail trail infrastructure. 22 degree start. Started at the Church street trailhead and headed south on the Limestone Greenway. Made it to the end and headed back north and headed up the Clear creek trail to Tapp road, then north on Weimer road. At Bloomfield road I headed in toward downtown Bloomington. At Adams street I made my way towards the B Line trail. At the trail head of the B line I heard someone yelling on the rail line that was parallel to the trail. As I continued on the trail there was a person screaming at me, demanding me to give them my boots or they would kill me. Fortunately I don't scare easily, but in hindsight I probably should have contacted authorities in case this person is actually dangerous. Also, if this person hadn't been so aggressive and just asked for help I had several packs of toe warmers in my frame bag for emergencies. Oh well, I wasn't about to actually put their threats to the test and get within reach to offer assistance. Anyway, I am looking forward to getting back up there in warmer weather and doing some more exploring. That area seems to have an abundance of bicycle infrastructure winding through what looks to be a beautiful town!

Unfortunately alot of Rail Trails go through dicey areas in every city. I've been surrounded by a group of kids once that stated they were going to "F" with me and only saved when a large running group came up the trail moments later and the oldest kid shook his head to the other kids to call it off. I once had a lady randomly yell that she was going to spit in my face as I rode by, etc... Kudos to you for riding in the cold. Once it gets below 40 I switch to hiking as I find the cold just penetrates my feet too much biking no matter how I bundle up.

The Quarry is gone, they filled it entirely in. Long epic rides through Lake Monroe, and Brown County are still there. Use to deliver papers to the main characters house as a kid on Lincoln. Grew up there, that use to be a nasty old run down rail yard and old run down rust belt brick buildings with most of the windows busted out from kids like me throwing rock, haha. Now it's swank and nice, farmer's markets, over priced apartments, other than the over priced apartments, most of the progress seems nicer. Good place for cycling though.

Thanks for not using a dizzying helmet cam. You are fortunate to have a choice of bike paths. I live in a city of 100,000 residents with no bike paths, only a white line separating bikes from car traffic. In other words, virtually no protection at all. Bike paths, both off- and on-street, would definitely increase the number of riders.

Hey,a great way to keep your fingers warm when wearing gloves that allow cold wind ingress is to put on a pair of nitrile gloves underneath. Doesn’t inhibit finger movement and creates a nice cold air barrier. Only negative is your fingers will sweat inside them… but they’ll be warm, so who cares? Just peel ‘em off and pitch ‘em after your ride.

Just swaths of worthless walking the trails between their free 3 hot meals a day. Spent a LOT of time there back in the day it was a wonderful city. Geesh what happened.. edit: rip the General

If someone says “you’re f’n dead” in an aggressive manner that’s a death threat. Especially if that person could be on drugs, they’re entirely capable of killing. Like that one guy who was naked and hurt/bleeding and still ran after a cop with a machete threatening him because he was on meth. These people are completely unpredictable

As did I, and I had the means to help just a bit in the form of chemical feet AND hand warmers but in today’s victim blaming society I’d never risk it when someone is behaving in that manner. Had I tried to help, and being that she was already manic, had I attempted to help and she became physically aggressive and I defended myself and she were to get injured , then I’m the A hole. So I decided to keep pedaling on. Not worth the risk. Leave the help to the professionals.

We are a county that is an ugly combination of crazy and cruel. If I was barefoot on a 20° farenheit winter day in Bloomington I would probably be slinging some murderous vocalizations myself. I am not suggesting that the gentleman was in anyway culpable for the loonie lady's frostbitten toes nor could he balance her brain chemistry or heal her psychic lessions. But we are all responsible for allowing our most damaged citizens to suffer the punishment of absolute poverty and predatory profit driven policing. What a dystopia our fecklessness has wrought.

I’m not anti e-bike either, i just don’t have a need for one or the money to buy one. 🤣 The camera is a gopro11 hero 11 and whatever kind of wizardry they use for stabilization is far beyond my pay grade but it’s fn amazing! The camera lens setting in the GoPro also makes things look a bit faster but it’s mainly due to the stabilization.

That's because many times we are. I've been an avid cyclist since the 1970s and rode my first bike in the late 1950's, so I speak with quite a bit of experience. I applaud the fact that Midwest Meanderer is riding on bikes trails, something I almost exclusively do myself. The one I ride on is an old railroad bed and it intersects several local roadways, some of them major connectors. Cyclists (and pedestrians) in my area are under the mistaken impression that they have the right-of-way and expect cars to stop for THEM. That's only the case if they are already in the crosswalk when a car approaches, then the car has to yield. Others than that, they are required by law to give way to cars and only enter the crosswalk after they pass. However, cyclists, especially those who don't want to unclip, routinely ignore the stop signs and expect cars to let them pass. In my state, bikes are considered motor vehicles and have to comply with all traffic laws. Can you imagine every motorist ignoring stop signs like this KZbinr did? While most of us have been guilty of not coming to a full stop at a stop sign, few of us just blow through stop signs. As a police officer, I gave more than one citation to a dumbfounded cyclist who ignored the traffic laws. Believe it or not, I once wrote a ticket to a cyclist after a head on collision with another cyclist because he was going the wrong way on a divided highway. I'm not a safety zealot but c'mon!
