FYI - Yes, “farm life” *can* mean processing fowl, culling livestock or euthanizing old horses. It is *NOT* shooting a birding pup bc it chased birds (instead of, you know, training or rehoming it).

If I wear my thick glasses, wear an "ASK ME ABOUT MY MYOPIA!" t-shirt, hand out copies of my prescription, while I scream into a megaphone that my vision sucks ass, then I've made it blatantly obvious that I have bad vision. I know plenty of people like Kendra describes, who maybe might learn to like or at least not distrust a dog on a case-by-case basis, but don't just like dogs generally speaking. I have coworkers who are just as leery of dogs as they are of cops, and for similarly justified reasons.

15:00 Lovett‘s rant here is so legit. That exact same dynamic of distrust / lack of mercy / assumption of guilt is why it’s so hard to socialize medicine, housing, etc. I hear this same sentiment from my democratic voting father in law. (He’s in Florida, so he is kind of steeped in conservative ideology. Thankfully still votes Dem, but I think it impacts his sense of “justice”.) Frustrating that such paranoia exists. Frankly, even in my neighbors here in blue Seattle, similar distrust seems to impact so many topics - especially around crime / perception of crime. (All be it not so extreme, more of a tint / coloring of view.) Love me a Lovett rant. Sometimes they just strike gold. 🌟👸

The whole dog story reminds me of the Shirley Jackson story, ‘The Renegade,’ where the protagonist is a mother recently moved to the country. Her family dog kills a chicken, and the story details her receiving recommendations from the community about how to brutally ‘take care of the dog’ with the worst ideas coming from her own sons. The protagonist is appropriately horrified. I just imagine that poor dog, not understanding what it had done wrong, being dragged to an actual physically painful execution. Awful. And I am decidedly a cat person. Get the dog a new home, you gross, weird woman.

A wonderful story and interesting to bring up in thos context. Her children, it should be noted, are the last to share their ideas. The sort of implication being that this is behavior they've learned from the town and how quickly children pick up on these things even when not being directly told. So loke of a school bans books woth transgender characters, suddenly stop any diversity and acceptance lessons or takes down signs of support and allyship, and passes laws basically saying "you cant be trans until your adult and even then its bad" kids NOTICE and they absord that hate.

Just on the topic of the "follow the law" discussion. I think that the Noem to English translation is "I didn't break any laws". But the thing that it really made me consider is the good vs evil argument that certain "Christians" use. You know "How can atheists know what's right or wrong if they don't follow the bible?" I used to reply that I was more worried about people who need a book to differentiate right from wrong. But now it seems even less useful since it can't even tell them what's wrong.

The fact that Resident Biden is essentially brain dead and only hauled out for minutes long disinformation sessions that the State Media and shills like this NPC then pretend are true is apparent, and easily debunked by any normal human being. The "I can bear the burden of tough decisions" angle only works when an animal is grievously suffering, and putting it down is an act of mercy. And the person doing it does so with a heavy heart and love for the animal - but musters the strength and steels their nerves to do what is best for the animal because someone has to do it. In *that* situation, yes, it becomes a common country-folk story that there was a reason you had to do it yourself instead of making the animal suffer a long, futile trip to the only veterinarian in the county. So you did the mercy kill yourself. I grew up in farm country. We never had to put our own dogs down (went to the vet for that) but did have to mercy kill a few wild animals at times, if they were discovered wounded and suffering. But this lady's story ain't it.

Finishing touches are often worth a fair bit of effort, if you get them wrong you can ruin a great bit, and if you hit a homer you can salvage a terrible bit. I don't particularly love dogs (I like great dogs, tolerate okay dogs and despise badly trained ones), but this still seems pretty callous. Also, seriously, she killed the dog because it was both bad at birding but also too eager to bird? It's all too obvious that she didn't train the dog, and probably didn't even try. Also, she talks about how dangerous this dog was, and her kids literally asked where the dog was when they got off the bus... presumably because they wanted to play with their puppy. I find it hilarious that people still think dog people are more common after cat videos completely obliterated dog videos, because unlike dogs cats have charisma, dogs are like a big dumb sloppy boyfriend, sure they love you but if you're honest they are a liability, people like dogs because they want to be held back, people like cats because they want to move forward. Needing two shots to kill a goat with a SHOTGUN is insane, this woman should be charged with animal cruelty for needing two shots, that is FUCKED UP. Good hunters kill wild prey with one shot as a rule, because it's cruel to animals to make them suffer needlessly, like if you gut-shot your pet goat and then took your time to reload. What a witch! Lovett, 'obvious' would be something you're looking for that was left in plain sight, 'blatantly obvious' is that same out in the open thing you're looking for, but it has a big flashing neon sign pointing to it. I think journalistically you need to be cautious about using fluff words like 'blatant' in this context, so unless it truly helps convey the desired message you should keep things as concise as possible. Something can be blatantly obvious and someone can be so clueless that they miss it (like bragging about shooting your kids' pet dog because it's both not a killer and a killer of birds). As a rule of thumb, you'd use blatantly obvious when you want to imply someone was being a complete goober/boob, it's often pejorative. Great that the cat survived, but I REALLY DON'T BELIEVE THIS STORY... I do not believe your housecat (which is probably fat and floofy) can hide in a box that can only hold 5 pairs of boots, this is just nuts. This does remind me of a story you guys might find funny, when I was younger I rented a room, and one of my house mates had a blind cat; the cat was cool, so we made a point of being supportive, but one evening I left my steel toe boots just outside my room (I think they smelled or something? who knows)... welp, the cat got spooked a bit, and ran straight into my boot, which had vibram soles on hardwood, so the boot didn't move, like at all. Poor cat thudded good, but it was fine thankfully! I made a point never to leave anything in that area again, because the cat had to get by based on it's memory of the house, and moving shit REALLY sucked for him.

As a Chinese that lives among some dog eating people, I can assure you that we still very much love dogs here. We generally have less pets per person because many people can’t afford one but it’s common to encounter a person that grows up with a dog and treat their dog as a family member. And those dog eaters are generally considered as cruel and barbarous. I think dogs are loved in many places among the world, the stigmatization of having cats though, it’s made up by some white people.
