As a recently retired police officer, the people suggesting choke holds are not allowed to be used in violent situations with criminals, should not be making laws or rules regarding same. I am a white woman and was a drug addict for most of my 20s. If it wasn’t for jails, I would not be here right now. I Deserved every jail sentence I got. People aren’t in jail because of their skin color. They are in jail because they committed crimes. If not for jail, then where will you put them? In a program? People aren’t afraid of programs. People don’t straighten up because they’re afraid of going back to a program. They get straight because they are tired of going to jail. I was convinced that the police had it out for me, I convinced my mother that the police had it out for me. It’s been 20 years and I have not been harassed by a cop one time since I straightened out. You show respect to them and they will show respect to you. Prisons and jails are not detrimental. They are needed.
