He had to die because that was his fate from the start. His life was destined to be glorious and tragic. He go back to be killed in front of her to prove that it was not ambition for power that made him cause the rebellion but was his desire to be with her. That since he had become useless to her after believing a lie, he had returned to pay the price of his sin by bringing back her glory even that would mean his death.
