Music is generally divine, but not all music is divine. But rag Malkauns is truly beautiful and adds not just beauty but also DIVINITY to music. I would call it a SPIRITUAL RAGA that CAPTURES your imagination and propels you into the SPIRITUAL COSMOS, and you feel like remaining there in that state oblivious of TIME. Bringing out the divinity of music in a simple manner, is undoubtedly the hallmark of a dedicated, practitioner of music, and you are one of those rare breed of teachers, as per my personal experience. I used to think classical music is difficult- no doubt it is in the sense that it calls for real dedication and personal involvement to a very high degree- but the simple manner in which those steps are taught and learned, makes the journey truly enjoyable, and constantly kindles the hope and desire to achieve the dream that can be very satisfying as a goal. God Bless you!

Bidisha, it's been a wonderful experience with the complete malkauns tutorial starting with the basic swar, the alaap, the swarmaalika, the Bandish, and finally the amazingly beautiful but bewitching, meaningless tan. Now I want to know if this is how a complete malkauns performance is rendered in a professional performance including the taan, or only the swar vista and Bandish are sung? The entire performance would perhaps take about 30 -45 minutes with all these components in the same sequence to do proper justice to this beautiful soulful raaga. Would greatly appreciate your response, as you always do. Thank you.
@BidishaGhosh3 жыл бұрын
Hello Arvind ji, so in a performance where the raag is sung for a long time (appx more than 45 mins), usually there is a very short alap, followed by a vilambit (bandish in slow tempo). there is variation/improvisation in that, followed by a faster bandish with sargam/taans etc. Sometimes if the artist wishes, they conclude with a tarana too. If a shorter rendition of the raag is sung, then the vilambit is usually not sung. The swarmalika is just a tool to understand the chalan/structure of the raag. it tells you the common phrases in the raag. It is not sung as part of the performance. Hope this helps!
@arvindrao88133 жыл бұрын
@@BidishaGhosh Thank you Bidisha. I am trying to understand classical music and therefore have questions to ask. Please don't mind my asking questions, because you require time to answer every question, and I know you are very busy, yet you respond very promptly which is very appreciable and shows your sincerity towards your pupils. There are basic terms like, swar, raag, aalaap, vistaar, aakaar, taan, swarmailka that can be confusing to those trying to understand classical music? Now, as I understand - a Raag is defined by a particular number of and combination of swaras. So the structure or limitation of a raga is fixed by those swaras, and their combinations. So a Particular raga can be suitable only for particular song or songs (based on the compatibility of lyrics of those song/s with any raaga - (correct me if I am wrong? )--and cannot be suitable for all songs with different lyrics. Now coming to aalaap - it is again based on the swaras of the raga - and its expansion or vistaar is limited by those swaras. Can we say that aalaps are only smaller combinations or blocks of swaras, within the boundary or limited structure of a particular raaga - to create improvisation within the scope of that Raaga. For example: Malkauns has the swaras, S G M D N S in Aroh- and SNDMGS in Aroh--(G,D,N, being komal or flat). So aalaaps are different possibilities of the vistaar or expansion of swaras within a particular Raga structure. Can we also understand vistaar of a ragas as being the same as khayaal, or improvisation or expansion?. Is the purpose of Aalaap intended to give introduction to a raaga? Many questions and doubts indeed! In view of above, can we say that Aalaap and swarmalika are not very different from each other and so can be merged with each other to make longer and more expansive aalaaps? Thanks for your patience, please take your time to respond. God Bless!
@BidishaGhosh3 жыл бұрын
Hello Arvind ji, alap is a short intro to the raag. so yes a small improvization at the beginning of a raag. within a song we do vistar, that's essentially doing badhat (or expanding on the song). Khayaal is essentially a song in a raag. bada khayal refers to a very slow tempo song. The tempo is slow and the beat cycle takes longer to complete. Choto khayal are all the ones I have taught in my lessons. With a khayal, we improvize (vistar) As for lyrics and compositions, I am not sure that the lyrics limit a raag. It's up to the composer to bring the essence out (however they want to I guess). hope this answers your questions.
@arvindrao88133 жыл бұрын
@@BidishaGhosh Dear Bidishaji, thanks for the clarification. I understand what you say. Presently I am focusing on Raag Malkauns as per your youtube videos, and I hope to make a recording with just a tempura and tabla using a software. I would like to share it with you to get your feedback on it. I have got the hang of it, along with the taans. One has to get into the skin of every aspect of a song through practice and I am just trying to do that. What I experience is that the Aalaap in slow tempo can be seamlessly merged with the swarmalika to make a faster swar vistaar- and then go to the Bandish with some of the taans you have taught.Similarly one can seamlessly move from the bandish to the Tarana, using some of the taans - Particularly the long taan in koyaliya bole ambu va dal par which goes as: Sn dn Sg Mg Sg Sn , Sn dn dM, gg MM d-n-s - d - n s , d- n - s It fits well into the tarana with 160 bpm. After listening to your video lessons, I am able to understand and appreciate the technical aspects of classical music much better. You see I am a natural singer without any training, and can pick up most songs even without understanding the technicalities, of raag, taan etc. But yes understanding it does make a lot of difference. Thank you so much for your clarification. God Bless you!
