The core of the problem in this city is that all traffic is routed towards the highways and just a few main roads. The neighbourhoods are to isolated. I did this as well earlier in my ‘career’. This also happened to be the core problem in Auckland, New Zealand in the 1980's. Minimal public transport and almost no walking and cycling infrastructure. At some point, this stops being traffic management and turns into Industrial Line Throughput Management. The buffers are good for surges, but the true problem ends up being total throughput at the cargo terminals. If the terminals can only handle 100 units of cargo per unit time, then it doesn't matter how much traffic shenanigans happen back along the line. You get 101 or more cargo units per unit time, it will eventually stack back all the way to source. Thus, adding that extra terminal was critical to clearing the cargo backlog. All in all, the biggest theme I see across a lot of these cities you've fixed is a tendency for players to use giant, high-density 'cells' of zones. If you pack 100 square km of industrial zone to the brim with factories, that's a 100 square km of factories, with all the trucks and employees that go with it. And then someone sticks a cargo terminal or two in some out of the way place on the map? That's asking for trouble. If you have a megacell zone like that, you want a cargo terminal pretty much right on top of it so trucks don't even have to LEAVE the area to go clog up your highways. Just look at the actual layout of major industrial hubs or ports that use rail connections. The rail spurs themselves usually come right into the heart of the area and branch out to individual major facilities. Obviously, we can't exactly do that in CS because the cargo terminal is one monster facility. Conversely, if you do a rail terminal for dispersed industry, it makes sense to set it up as it's own exit off a highway, with one-way flow much like an airport loop (as you did with the new terminal and the buffer). Of course, you're not redesigning their cities. You're taking what cities they've built, and spending time making the traffic system work for them as best you can. And I've definitely applied a few techniques of yours that, while academic in real life, did not click in the game engine until you expressly did it. The highway upgrade to 4-lane for slip lane ramps was one thing. I've seen it enough times here in the States that it's just background noise to my mind, but not something I ever thought about in the game, treating explicit road types like they can't be intermingled. The traffic manager definitely takes that to the next level, allowing me to use small streets for parking lots and other such 'non road' setups, while not having to worry about twenty junctions along a short stretch of road, because I set all those side paths to give way to the main road. Just controlling and shaping road ACCESS unsnarls some otherwise untenable road configurations. Makes me want to send you screencaps to give you ideas for your own fixes.

Nice fix! Another option if you have a junk crap ton of traffic on the highway is to put in a secondary highway, treating the original as a bypass. That way you have a high-speed, high-capacity road around your city for locals to get around and the outsiders who are passing through the area won't bork up your traffic with all the congestion they create. It also keeps trucks delivering stuff locally from your industry clogging up the main highway. There are a lot of places like this in the US where through traffic stays on the main highway and local traffic has their own. Just an idea that may help with all of that.

Hello Biffa- I love your channel and I don't even play Sky Cities. Your narration and jokes keep me so entertained. I loved watching Top Gear/Grand Tour b/c of a similar humor even though I am not a gear-head. One part of their show that always made me laugh was at the beginning of the show, Jeremy would say, something like "And in tonight's show... Hammond pets a goat, James sips tea, and I wrestle an old lady..." and each comment would show a small clip of the show that was super funny. I love how you show a little clip in the beginning of the episode showing something funny happening within the game... more of this would add a little flavor to your channel and personality and show the players of the game the unique glitches that happen within the game (i.e. prisoners marching through the sky, a flying Delorina car, or a fast spinning police car stuck in the sky).

The cargo rail stations generate huge amount of HGV traffic. I have three in my 80k city but all have horrendous queue. And all in one line for miles and miles long, through two highway junctions and ramps.
@superdau5 жыл бұрын
Cargo stations have been almost broken in the way they work since the start. You have absolutely no control over cargo traffic, the cargo station is way too slow in accepting trucks and faster cargo stations apparently aren't possible to to due to how they are coded (considering that mods have changed almost everything, but there is no better cargo station available). It would be nice if you could at least set a cargo station to something like "city internal"/"export" only, or set them to only service the district they are placed in. I wish they would fix that instead of releasing one DLC with similar game mechanics after the other.

@@superdau A noob here, playing my first city using only the stock software bundle with Sunset Harbor, and of the 5 freight stations, it's the one closest to the city center (such as there is) that causes all of the grief. Judicious use of 6 lane One-Way streets and Yield signs prevents total gridlock, but I've learned a few things to map out better in the future, including absolute separation of rail and road rights-of-way NO grade crossings allowed!) for at *least* one train length past either end of the station. Unfortunately, given that this was my first freight station, I didn't know what the train length would be, nor the frequency of the train traffic...
@arandombard11974 жыл бұрын
@@chemech Honestly, the simplest solution is KEEP YOUR INDUSTRY SEPARATE FROM YOUR RESIDENTIAL. Have large separate areas specifically for industry and a large separate area specifically for your train depot. If everything is properly planned and organised around those things, traffic is heavy but efficient and not getting in anybody else's way.
@chemech4 жыл бұрын
@@arandombard1197 Oh, I had that separation... I had been playing SimCity since the very first edition, and the surest way to ruin land value and citizen happiness is to have people living right on top of the factories and powerplants and the like. I fixed it with the help of TM:PE and eliminating the grade crossing on one tf the two approach roads where the frequent trains were blocking the trucks. I also had to edit the triangular rail junctions to accommodate even longer trains than what I had expected (~8 passenger coaches wasn't long enough) Bottom line - the vanilla game is almost unworkable without a traffic manager, and if you draw the wrong hand with the random number generator, you can have one of your neighbors just bury your city with freight - trucks and trains - even before you get to 35,000 residents

Every time I watch Biffa fixing a city I feel like there are plenty of better options to improve. - 6:05 Fixing roundabouts that don't need fixing and cutting off walkpaths at the same time. Just let them be. - 7:10 Downgrade the section in between the ramps 3->2 instead of upgrading the sections before the off-ramp 3->4. - 11:07 Open up the entire intersection/roundabout instead of restricting the drivers options. So often they have to circle Biffa's entire cities to get to where they need to go. - 13:33 No need for a roundabout here. Fix the endpoint of their journeys or furthest bottleneck first (in this case the Cargo Station intersection) before chugging in a roundabout. I know it's Biffa, but still. There's room for a larger intersection there as well, with sliplanes coming from East and West merging into 2-lane roads. Don't get me wrong. I love the shows and I'm learning a lot. It just seems too overcomplicated to me

Enjoy your videos, sir! As a point... about 9:00 you speak about highways not reducing lanes at exits in the UK... Here in Dallas, Texas, USA, we have cases where they do. You will have four-lane highway approaching an interchange or junction, and one lane will exit, leaving three until the other side, where the on-ramp becomes the fourth lane again. I suppose "They" think that enough traffic will exit so there is no need for the extra lane between, and want to save money or something. Keep up the great work!

It's not that "we drive like crazy", it's that you people all drive like James May. Actually, as long as you're quick and decisive with your actions and you're not doing anything really stupid that puts someone in real danger of a crash, Italians are probably the most forgiving bunch on the road. You'll never hear someone honking at you because you (gasp) went over a solid line or did something else forbidden.

for new Vanilla Players without DLC or Mods, keep this in mind: the way the Traffic works in this game needs you to blind mainly one way roads. Let them drive big distances if needed, cause it doesn't matter if they have to drive longer. The only thing matters is your operative executive stuff like Police or Firetrucks. Because of them you need 6 lane roads, to make Emma bypass the Traffic quick. Make a huge one way around your city and busroads threw the city mixed with 2 lane one roads and try to avoid junctions. If you use roads going into both directions make sure they either end in a roundabout or in a one way 6 lane to the right (depens on left/right sided traffic. If they are still any Traffic lights, switch them of and use a stop sign for the weaker side so the heavy side can move most of the time. Make Sure to keep yellow and blue buildings close to the big roads and use small ones for green.

Covid has kept me working overtime in the last year, I'm blessed and lucky but my city building skills have become wet noodles, pits of despair and canine landmines for pedestrians. Long time no comment, glad to have Biffa as a gold standard.

I have found that distributing your industry thru the city, surrounded by commercial, solves the traffic issue from commercial traffic issues. They sort of distribute better. Then put ur rail yard further from the city with multiple road entryways. I start my city centers with 4 to 6 industry grids, surrounded by commercial, then residential on the outside. I have one district with 85k ppl and no public transport. But traffic is epic. Ppl prefer to walk since their residential areas are right by their work.

A roundabout in my town, replacing a 4-way intersection with traffic light, is Connecticut's solution for 200k+ cars a day through a town of 5k down a two-lane road. Cheaper and less environmental impact than finishing the highway they stopped building in 1976 due to a lack of funding... Now, we can violate the law that was passed banning idling longer than 3 minutes by sitting stuck in traffic for 20 minutes because of two poorly-timed traffic lights and FAR more traffic than the road was ever designed to handle. I wish it could be fixed as easily as a road in CS. :-) I love watching these videos because someday I dream of having a computer powerful enough to run CS and want to have something of a clue of what to do when I finally am able to play!
