The biggest difference is that real world traffic spends more time trying to make roads safer and less time trying to reduce traffic congestion. Cities Skylines does not have adequate traffic safety consideration. To do that, you'd have to implement drivers which occasionally disobey traffic rules and cause accidents. The key concern for safety is that slower vehicles are less likely to break traffic rules and cause major accidents. And so you get nightmare-levels of traffic. Of course, if people followed the law, then we could design traffic to be minimal, but we don't live in that fairy tale world yet.

Keep watching Biffa and others, I know Sam Burr also has some good CS videos as well, you'll learn how to do traffic management. Add to that learning what buildings create traffic, where that traffic will want to go, and how they'll need to get there. (eg residential buildings will create workers who'll want to go to commercial and industrial workplaces). plan hubs and arterial roads to move them from residential to workplace. Disperse residneces and workplaces a bit, so you don't get everyone going in the same direction at the same time. Give alternatives, both in mode of travel (road, bus, metro, walking, cycling, etc), and in routes (multiple different roads that connect neighborhoods together). So in short, plan for traffic to have a sensible route from A to B, give different ways to go from A to B, and disperse traffic in different directions, so some will go from A to B, others from A to C, and so on.

@@christophergallagher3721 That can be a powerful tool to convince people to switch from cars to transit where transit is available. The thing to be aware of is that those trains and buses aren't free to buy and run, so the money's got to come from somewhere. If your tax revenues aren't up to the task, you'll be left with no choice but to charge fares to cover the cost of running the system, or risk your city going bankrupt. I prefer to take stock of the situation and pick the best strategies to meet the needs of the citizens while at the same time not angering the banker.

That is why they have metering loops in most streets. Not only do they measure how much traffic there is, but the information is also send to central datacenters for processing. That information is often often used to create 'green waves' to gives motorist green lights on all the crossing on heavy traffic roads (as long you obey the speed limit). Traffic engineering is pretty much like any dynamic fluid engineering job. That is why engineers are calling it a traffic flow.. One of the earliest areas where AI was introduces was traffic control and for AI control you need lots of data. Google Maps can also show you congestion on roads (most based on cell phone movement provided by providers, but also by android phones with location services turned on). However traffic centers have that information per lane. Counter loops always have at least two wires. The time it takes to cross both wires gives you the speed (in centimeters|inches/ms), Also road camera images are processed using AI to determine traffic flow and is also used to recognized when someone is on the emergency shoulder and usually some roadside assistance company (like AAA) is informed and they dispatch someone to help you out. When people see a car on the shoulder standing still most of them lower their speed and that causes a break reaction chain further back. That is why more and more emergency services setup screens on highway to limit the view so people keep their focus on the road and not the accident..

My second city got hosed by having the industrial district further away from the highway than my residential zones, then cargo trains backing up major roadways due to space constrictions. I'm on my third one, which is much better - part of it is having two cargo train depots on either side of a giant oil shale that's most of my industry. Thanks to another Biffa video, I knew to have those depots on roads that are used exclusively for the depots, and to have a bit of a winding leadup to them. i run modded double Decker buses. (70/bus) 30 pax buses works, if you don't count standees, and other than rural roads what bus doesn't have standees at times? i also run even smaller buses on my low pax runs. sometimes i kinda want a comfort booster/negative for the public transit. with buses and such taking like +100% of rated max(EG the buses we have now taking 60 if needed) if a stop is that stuffed, but taking comfort hit to the route, dropping its popularity; likewise if a bus/stops aren't stuffed, it might see more traffic.

If you want to have decent industry, especially with the DLC there is no way to go lower anyway, because busy industry streets and roads coming up to e.g. train depots will always have a lot of traffic. You actually solved it with enabling "Dynamic Lane Selection". But for people without the CPU cycles to spare, the way to solve cars not using all of the lanes on a roundabout is the same as on any street. Use the lane arrow switcher to make single use lanes. All of those cars were diving into the middle of that giant roundabout because all of the exit lanes were setup to exit *and* to carry through. A lot of people misconstrue that and think 4+ lane roundabouts just don't work, but they absolutely do if you set up the lanes correctly.

Over here, bus stops both before and on the roundabout, zebra stripes immediately before the roundabout, seems to work brilliantly in real life.

best way to solve it both IRL & ingame is with an over/underpass for pedestrians and forbid them crossing at road level. where there is applicable space to do so, that is

Why are crossings always put on roundabout exits IRL?

4:08 - a car disappears. 4:14 - Biffa mentions, as he usually does, despawning is turned off. 😂 I guess there were a bit too many cars that it had to despawn one to not over-lag the game.

I just recently play the game and your videos are both hilarious and educational to see how silly we can be in creating the mess and for early player like me to avoid it if we can! I subscribed!!!

Great video! You're the only youtuber who checks to see if 200 empty buses are roaming around the city.

Aside from the traffic issues, I think that roundabout design is so awesome and really well done. Just needed some help with the mathematics and lane/speed management is all. I think this city is actually pretty, overall.

I found myself almost shouting at the screen when my OCD sets in... You fixed everything with the big roundabout in the middle, but you didn't take care of the lanes in it... aaargh!! :p But that city really looked cool, interesting layout. *thumbs up*

😳 What a roundabout, Biffa! 😆 But you cleared it out pretty good, and I'd expect nothing less. Congratulations on your project, by the way. Looking forward to seeing more, thanks... 😌
