Keep in mind that US Airways actually bought out AA. . . they took the better known AA name after the merger and moved HQ to DFW.

Chemical Bank bought Chase Manhatten, changed their name to Chase, which then bought JP Morgan - oh dear, decisions... The Chemical board still ran the show, but they had never had an "image", so no reverting to that...two great brands, which to choose....Wow, JP Morgan Chase. In conclusion, whatever they choose as a name, we still get landed with the bailout bill when they enevitably, regularly, face a near collapse, same as the damned banks

Delta is so punctual, safe and the service is outstanding. That is what I like most about this airline. American Airlines is classy, safe, good service as well. US Airways, when I flew with it, it was punctual, the service good quality as well and well I lived in Charlotte NC, and it is the major airline there. The designs are beautiful of the three. Although there was a quick logo design for Delta before the actual one. I remember the tail had like a flag waving kind of design on the tail. Thought it was pretty.

@@christopherwaits7852 that's because Smisek thought very differently than his predecessors. Larry Kellner and Gordon Bethune did not have the same scumbag mentality as Smisek. And besides, keep in mind that before United and Continental merged, United had many problems under their pre-merger CEO, Glenn Tilton as well as under Smisek. Pre-merger United went bankrupt in 2005 and never recovered before the merger. Also, remember when United broke guitars? That was when Continental had no plans on doing a full-on merger with United.

I find Delta very interesting in their choices, especially in the last 3-5 years, seeing them give up on various cities they had such a long tenure using as their focus cities, allowing the budget carriers to take the cities over quickly as they leave. It's sometimes puzzling, like here, they gave up on PDX being a focus airport for them, even though they had consistently remained right at the very top in tickets sold, passengers carried and people talking of them and liking their services here alongside Alaska Airlines. But I believe in 2017 it was when they officially announced they'd be ridding Portland as a focus city, and rid most of their routes here, too. Southwest almost instantly came in and took over most of their routes.

@@Waddle_Dee_With_Internet If you're referring to the incident with the passenger getting dragged off, that flight was actually operated by Republic Airways and the dragging done by O'Hare Airport security staff. Republic operates flights for United Express, American Eagle, and Delta Connection. I'm not loyal to United or anything, but it is interesting that the worst hit to their reputation arose from the actions of a third party who does business with all of the Big Three. That lightning bolt could easily have nailed American or Delta. That said, I do think United handles flight booking, so the overbooking is on them. Whether United overbooks more than the others, I don't know. Pretty much all airlines overbook to one degree or another.

I'm most familiar with United and their merger with Continental. I lived relatively close to Newark and usually flew Continental on family vacations. My dad also traveled extensively for work and flew them a lot. My grandfather was actually a pilot for United a long time ago, though no one in my family ever flew the pre-merger United during my lifetime. In my opinion, the merger did not go as smoothly as it could have. I remember one trip during the merger where our flight got cancelled out of nowhere at the last minute, and we had to drive to another airport to get home. The airlines essentially operated separately for several years after they received the single operating certificate. These issues were followed by several highly publicized customer service incidents, and really gave the airline a bad reputation. I think they are improving things now by focusing more on customer service and refurbishing all their aircraft cabins, including reintroducing seatback IFE.

Very interesting observation. Continental had a stellar reputation, but after the merger with United, that got trashed. I was concerned that the same would happen when US Airways (who I had flown exclusively) merged with American, because at the time, American had acquired a negative connotation. Happily, I have not seen a degradation, although I do tend to limit my connections, etc. to former US Airways cities.

As a non American I've only flown on United, American and Southwest Airlines. All I can say is United and American Airlines need to improve their service. They are operating like budget airlines but are parading like premium airlines. In my view American Airlines was the worst and they got this vote because they seperated my family on a domestic leg. Can you imagine my 4 year old sitting with strangers on the whole flight? Southwest Airlines are great value. Haven't flown on Delta yet but from comments I hope to try it one day.

I've flown all three of the 'big three'. My choice is Delta, by far. I will willingly pay more to fly Delta because the service and experience is just better. It's not to the level of some European or middle eastern carriers, but it's definitely the best of the big three US airlines. I would also note that I liked flying Continental. I was very disappointed when United decided to merge with them. United ruined a much better airline. Us Airways and American were a good fit together. Both airlines seemed interchangeable anyway. The experience was pretty much identical when they were separate. I hate Southwest only because I absolutely hate being herded like cattle. With occasional motion sickness, I need a window seat. I would rather go with a carrier that gets me an assigned seat, in spite of Southwest's great staff. I only wish I could have experienced Pan Am back in it's glory days.

Two things to correct here: 1) US Airways acquired American Airlines; they just kept the AA branding since it made sense for them 2) United Airlines today is not actually United; while the merger (which is still happening at the grounds-level!) was mostly equal, it’s easier to say that Continental was the major shareholder (both branding and livery as well as top corporate heads came from CO), but keeping the name “United”. I still appreciated the United Airlines history.

Actually US Airways did a reverse merger on American, (meaning they took over AA name but kept the US Airways team and all), which is funny because America West did the same for US Airways, so you could say America West bought out US Airways, and then American, but changing their name each time to the company they bought

US Airways bought American Airlines, not the reverse as stated in your video. (I see this mentioned in other comments as well) Prior to that little ol' America West had purchased USAir. In each case a decision was made to keep the name of the acquired carrier for it's better brand recognition. Evidence of all this is the fact that Doug Parker, CEO or America West then USAir, is now CEO of American Airlines. Amazing to think Parker engineered the transformation of America West into the world's largest airline.

One correction -- Delta started in Monroe, LA, then moved later to Atlanta. The name came from their crop dusting service over the Mississippi Delta...

My favorite airline is the one that gives me the best deal. I am planning a trip from Austin to Melbourne, Australia in April. Business class on United is almost $2,000 less than American/Qantas. There is a nearly equal spread between the offerings for premium economy. I lived in Melbourne for nearly five years. I flew from DFW to Melbourne or vice versa 28 times. Most of my trips were on Qantas/American. I am in American's frequent flyer program, but given the price spread stated above, I decided on United for my trip to Australia in April.

Give me Southwest any day. No fees! Reasonable airfares. Their low fare calendar is awesome when trying to find the fare that works for you. Southwest leaves the others in the dust..... Of course if you are flying Int'l you will have to fly other carries. I wish we had a Qantas America! Qantas is my favorite carrier for Australia and NZ. Braniff was awesome. The big three you are talking about are, in my opinion, way too big!! Smaller companies are in order so they can give better service as opposed to what they have become. My two cents..J

The big 3 are basically ULCC in Designer Clothing unless you fly Business. They charge for everything now unless you pay to upgrade and it seems every couple of years they reduce the seat pitches in their new aircrafts.

I wish pan am still existed… although it would be a dive roll to see how they turned out, from basically a 4th mainline US carrier, to a small carrier in the Caribbean and South America, to them basically being an emirates / Qantas / BA for America.

If I have to chose between the 3, I'll choose Delta 6 days a wk & twice on Sunday's...At least if I fly Delta, there's a better than average chance that I won't be dragged off the plane bleeding profusely (United), & should I decide to bring my pet along, it won't die of dehydration in the cargo hold due to a "booking oversight" (American)...Oh, I'll also have the comfort of knowing that if I'm flying domestic on a popular route, there's a good chance I'll have an IFE, but even if I don't, I'll actually be able to afford the Wi-Fi on Delta without having to take out a 2nd mortgage for a 2hr flight like I would on American & United.

United has the largest wide body fleet by far, and is the most global of the big four. Delta's FA's sadly are still not unionized and pro-union employees continue to face retaliation from the company. American was actually purchased by US Airways, which was purchased by America West. It's AINO (American in name only).

It’s worth pointing out that despite all the consolidations and government bailouts, the U.S. actually still has one of the most competitive airline industries. Most other countries typically have one flag carrier and maybe a budget carrier alternative. Besides the Big Three, the U.S. also has JetBlue, Alaska, Southwest, Spirit, Allegiant, and numerous other smaller regional carriers.

United has one of the best Frequent flier programs with the option to book a flight with a decent amount of miles all the others ask for a crazy amount of miles that unless you truly fly all the time you will never get to redeem those miles for a trip.

If southwest had long haul it would be the best airline. Yes I realize it is all economy class but let's be honest , can any of us really afford buisness or first. The only issue is one of the main ways they save money is by having a one aircraft type fleet, to keep mantinence simple and buying in bulk possible. But southwest has excellent service, great pilots (Never had a southwest pilot have a hard landing) and they are just so cheap.
