Big Bear Eagle Cam ~ Me & My Shadow ~ Shadow Returns Following Mrs. BB 6.24.18

Mrs. BB flies in to the nest and seconds later we hear Shadow fly in to the tree. Shadow loves to follow Mrs around the area and LOVES this nest. Shadow waits for Mrs BB to go to her branch before dropping down to the nest to move some sticks. At 10:26 Mrs BB drops to the nest and is interested in what Shadow is doing - - Shadow just continues to work the nest! I would like to see them both working on the nest together! 11:11 a little beaking by Mrs to Shadow - this is something all eagles do with one another - mates and siblings alike. Shadow just keeps working the nest! Mrs returns to her branch, Shadow comes to the front of the nest and then goes to Dad's branch. Shadow departs at 17:47. Another great visit by Shadow & Mrs BB. Hi Barb Shadow is 3 years old and will not be sexually mature until 5 years old when he will get his white head and tail feathers.

We watch eagle families and cheer successful fledging but wonder how everyone is doing later. It’s good to see the behavior of this subadult and hope all the others are faring well too. Stormy is out exploring the entire Big Bear area and has been spotted over a 1/2 or more from the nest at times. He is hanging out with his new friends and doing all the things a young eagle should be doing! I am happy for him - but still I do wish he would come back for a visit too!

Shadow is a beauty and he knows it by looking straight into the cam 😹 This video was enjoyable to see birds are able to get along no matter what’s behind the story..Yesterday a couple of years old juvenile stopped in to say hi at the Decorah Y tree close to the nest. I love your title Lady Hawk! I can tell you're feeling the same way about Shadow as me, the whole situation is just so enthralling! Mrs. BB's vocals starting at 2min towards Shadow were very cute. She seemed to be in full communication as he entered the nest but she was okay with his nestorations for the most part as saw her keep a close eye on everything. Mrs. Bear comes to inspect the quality of Shadows work at 10:20 and the beaking was truly something! They worked the nest together for a few seconds which in itself was remarkable to see. Shadow's come a long way to earn her trust this far which is obvious. Awesome Shadow close-up scap opportunities around 13:10mark and again around 15:05 of which I took a few. I think had Shadow attempted to stay the night with Mrs. BB she would've let him. Thanks for this great coverage LH❤ ttys.

Hi Tom - I think Shadows persistence and steadfastness working on the nest drew Mrs, BB back to the nest to investigate. I loved seeing them together and envision a Trio in my minds-eye someday a couple years from now ♥♥

I love Shadow too, but I do miss my Stormy. Don't let Stormy find out that Shadow touched his pinecone! I think that Shadow is a male as well. I would let him do all the nest practice building he wants too. He doing a good job at cleaning it. Love the way Mrs. BB talks to him and the beaking is so sweet. I do think she kinda likes him. Thanks for another great video Lady Hawk! Just finished watching for the second time, Shadow has the most beautiful eyes. Maybe Mrs. BB likes him because he IS quiet. After having Stormy with all his sqeeeing she just might be enjoying the fact that Shadow doesn't make any noise.

Lady Hawk Thank you for another wonderful video. Mrs BB clearly likes Shadow friendship and company, I have read Tom Sawyer comments agree completely, (so I won't repeat everything) LOL. I have to say the beaking was truly something!! The interactions between them is heartwarming to see, I love Shadow so much and to see him be accepted so completely has my heart brimming with happiness. Love this relationship unfolding before us!! Mrs. BB has been cautiously accommodating, letting this youngster hang around (I think she really likes the company!). We are so lucky to be able to see this juvie up close and personal at this stage of it's life. He/she is a beauty, as is Mrs. BB and Stormy!!! Thanks so much, Lady Hawk!!!!!

Thanks Lady Hawk - I love Mrs. BB.I like that Shadow's entered the scene with permanence, but I'm so baffled! I'm assuming that Shadow's definitely not related to Mrs. BB, and that Shadow's not tagged. Did I get this right? Is adoption a common thing among the eagles? Also, has Mr. BB returned at all? I've been watching the live cam more sparingly lately, but I haven't seen Mr. BB at all. Any ideas? Sorry I'm asking so many questions - just really curious :D

Dad is in the area and can be seen on one of the surrounding trees. He is not coming to the nest very often now - he is still providing for Stormy.

Mrs BB knows Shadow poses no threat at all and is submissive and allows him to stay. I think Shadow is a male.

Lady Hawk a question....is there really such a bird as a MUTE BALD EAGLE ?? Is it physically possible that a bald eagle could actually be mute?? I have tried researching the internet but cannot find an answer. Thank you in advance (if you know the answer) LOL. In one of Tom Sawyer's comments on another page he said "a mute bald eagle caught on camera" I am asking as a fact - other than an eagle just not vocalizing much because they are passive. (You understand what I mean).

Yes, I just noticed in this video that Shadow doesn't make any vocal sounds. Never noticed this before and wondered if you watched other "Shadow" videos and ever hear him vocalize. I'm going to go back & check myself because by the time he's 5, he has to have a voice.

I have gone back over all the other videos. Because Stormy squees non-stop it has looked like Shadow has vocalized. The same with Mrs BB - she vocalizes and I have presumed that Shadow has as well but he hasn't. Other people who know what they are looking at have noticed that Shadow has not vocalized. Fascinating!

Shadow has never vocalized at all on cam or to those on the ground photographing him. There have been instances where an eagle loses their voice but there is not a lot of information out there on it so we are learning through observation. Shadow can hear and reacts to sound.

It is possible that Shadow does not vocalize because of some trauma that occurred and it is a behavioral issue. It is also possible that he/she was born this way although I have never heard of that happening. I have seen injuries to birds that caused them to lose their vocal cords but Shadow does not appear to have any injuries. There are no facts that show us there are mute bald eagles that I am aware of but that does not mean there aren't any. That is the beauty of these webcams where we watch and learn! We will just have to keep watching and observing to see what happens.

My answer is FISH HOOKS!!. I have just watched a video about veterinary surgeons removing a fish hook from eaglet's stomach after it was in a fish the poor eaglet ate. Shadow's non-vocal state would be the result of fish hooks. We cannot prove this - but it is what I will believe. You are right - Shadow's hearing is perfect and he knows and understands all of Mrs BB vocalizations.
