Lady Hawk - another excellent narrative. I totally agree Simba will fly when he is ready. I feel the longer wait the better for Simba to learn the skills for the most excellent first and more important, safe fledge. I also am in awe of his most dedicated, loving parents. Such an amazing eagle family! Thank you as always!

If I remember Stormy fell and only began flying because he needed to get back to the nest to eat, it was motivation! Simba doesn’t see the need to fly when he’s got five fresh fish delivered right to him!

Stormy was wingercising on the nest at the 2 o'clock position and slipped off and fell 20 feet below landing on a branch. He was not old enough to fly as his flight feathers were still not fully formed. He then took the next 9 days to grow and when confident - he was able to fly back up to the nest. Both Jackie and Mr BB fed Stormy on the branch during this time- we could hear the delivery and feeding sounds from the cam. Hunger is a great motivator for an eaglet to fledge - Simba is too well fed these days to consider leaving!!

Thank You, Lady Hawk for giving us this information about fledging from the BB nest. This is the first year I viewed this nest. This family is truly amazing. It is a good thing that Simba is vocal, because his parents will be able to locate him once he fledges. When he sees one of his parents, he also becomes vocal. This family has provided much entertainment for me. I love all of them. Five fish!

@@carolyncarlson-yellen4790 Hi - you are most welcome! No worries on Simba when he does fledge both Shadow and Jackie have eagle eyes and will keep an eye on him no matter where he goes! Yes they will also recognize his cries - but he will be chasing and following after them especially for food deliveries!

Simba will be a hulk - he's getting lots of food! Jackie still gives him a piece of what food she rips off. He doesn't squee as much as he does with Shadow, and he sleeps near or next to Jackie at night. He's a happy eaglet 👍 Thanks Lady Hawk! - Stephanie

👍🤚Lady Hawk marvelous day for Simba. I am surprised the parents are still providing so much food. I know with the Osprey Families that live around me the Adults encourages the juvenile by 2 ways 1 the food is decreased and also the parents will watch the juvenile from a nearby tree make less visits to the nest. Once I see the Osprey is getting less food then I watch to see and sure enough the juvenile is hovering and getting close to fledging. Usually around here parents will provide 2 meals a day although they may be small even after Osprey fledges for sometime. As you know a juvenile Osprey is not skilled enough to successfully fish. But this hunger is what also makes the juvenile keep attempting to fish and then their is instinct. It really doesn’t take them long to get a fish it’s all about the perfect fishing spot and there is plenty of that around me. I must say that I am happy we get to hear and still see Simba. Thank you for posting Dr Sharps comment.i use to go to site to see If Dr Sharp or anyone has posted anything but never have to anymore as YOU always share and put what is going on in your descriptions. I honestly don’t know how you do it. The older I get the harder it is on multitasking 😆. It will be a wonderful treat to see Simba Fledge from this nest. Thanks again take care 💕

Hi OM - yes that is one very effective method for the adults to encourage the eaglet to fledge by decreasing the amount of food brought in. Today there was only one small fish in the early morning for Simba so tomorrow (Tuesday 7/23/19) let's see if that has some impact on Simba. Of course, if Jackie or Shadow bring in fish early that may not work lol Thanks so much my friend - I do try to add some information I see or think will be relevant to the video at hand! Talons crossed for Simba tomorrow!! Take care!

Simba gets so excited when he sees Mom and Dad heading his way. Such a cute boy dancing with his fish. 🐟🦅. He doesn’t look like he wants to fly away from home. That’s interesting information from Dr. Sharp, but I don’t understand about the removal of the Catalina eaglets placed in towers without adults. 🤔
@ladyhawk5 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen - What Dr Sharpe is saying is that the eagles were extinct from the Channel Islands from DDT contamination. So to re-populate the islands, they took eaglets that were 4-6 weeks old from other nests or raised in places like the San Francisco Zoo and were put in these hacking towers. When they flew for the first time- they did not have any adults around to help them out in any way - the point being that fledging is purely instinctual and the timing to fledge is up to the individual eaglet! So in Simba's case we don't know what the normal date of fledges are for this nest - Simba might be on schedule.

Question: water 💦 is essential to all living things, but there’s no way to bring actual water to the young. My guess their water comes from whatever is in the bodies of their food, but on other channels when subadult birds are rescued, they are often found to be severely dehydrated. We don’t get to see exactly how often Simba gets fish, but it doesn’t seem to be a lot, which explains his frenzy when one IS brought. Could dehydration be part of why he hasn’t fletched? He might not think he’s got enough energy because he’s always hungry 😋!
@ladyhawk5 жыл бұрын
Hello Diane Craig - eaglets as well as the other young raptors - osprey, owls, falcons etc do not need to drink water as they receive all the moisture they require from the food they consume. Their own bodies will break down the nutrients and generate byproducts of water. This is sufficient for them for the first months of life as they are not expending the same energy as they will after they fledge. Some eaglets rescued are dehydrated but those records are subjective - - how long were they on the ground without food? The weather strongly affects dehydration as well. But in Simba's case he is eating fish every day which has the highest water content of all prey so he is not dehydrated at all. His behavior has nothing to do with being dehydrated - most adults begin to bring in less food at this stage to encourage the eaglets to fledge - hunger is a great motivator. Simba has not fledged because he is eating very well at the nest! We also do not have the history on the age of fledges for Big Bear - this could be quite normal for them to fledge later.

Last night (7/20-21), U did not see Jackie roost on her branch. I checked through out the night, and she wasn't there. This caused me to worry about her. Will look for her today.

Hi Carolyn - yes it is very normal for Jackie to not be on her normal roosting branch or even in the nesting tree. Simba is grown up - She is not required to be there like she did when he was younger.

how old is this nest? is jackie fairly new to the area?
@ladyhawk5 жыл бұрын
Hello Angela the nest was built in 2009 by a different pair of eagles. Jackie is a young eagle only 6 years now. Last year was her first breeding season at this nest. This season she has a new mate Shadow who is a young sub adult. We do not know for certain Jackie's history as the eagles are not banded and no positive identifying marks can be used on the eagles. FOBBV think that Jackie could be the offspring of one pair of eagles Ricky and Lucy but again this is just supposition as they are not banded or tracked for identification purposes.

Hello mariner girl - this is only the 2nd season we have the cam live at Big Bear. Last year we had two eaglets hatch Stormy and Triple B. When Triple B was about a month old - he passed away due to hypothermia from extremely cold weather lasting several days. Stormy was wingercising on the nest at the 2 o'clock position and slipped off and fell 20 feet below landing on a branch. He was not old enough to fly as his flight feathers were still not fully formed. He then took the next 9 days to grow and when confident - he was able to fly back up to the nest. So his accidental fledge was not something we could use as a benchmark for future fledges like Simba!
